  1. It's a memory problem indeed, the RAMDAC is fast enough, but it could be an early BIOS problem too. The 8200 isn't limited on HDMI as it's just linked to DVI without any sound at all (not 100% sure about if the 8200 supports sound over HDMI)...EDIT: Second thought, nVidia doesn't have sound provided by the GPU, at leats not on mGPU/iGPU, what was I thinking .
  2. Also the motherboard is known for bad capacitors and a faulty Southbridge...
  3. The AMD chipset 780G would do the trick. If you can return the board I would change it for something better, if not, than I would say it's a memory problem, could be BIOS (any updates?), could be indeed the BIOS settings. You can always throw in a ATI HD4350 or so, cheap and works well .
  4. Any 2.5" drive would fit in there, 320GB are rated at good prices, 500GB are over rated in price. Just slide the drive out of the SATA connectors (don't pull it upwards!) and take out the 4 screws of the caddy/HDD and replace the drive that you have now with the new one, 4 screws back in, slide the HDD back in place and you are ready to install, yes to install, your OS again. So again, note that you need to reinstall your OS again...
  5. Snap, just came into the office and got these: http://support.creative.com/Products/Produ...e=Sound+Blaster That card is build week 23 of 2002, so it's a new version of the Soundblaster 5.1 (not Life! and i think still based on their vibra chip).
  6. I'm surprised you took Gigabyte into your list hawkecho125, those are nice cases for the price but are seldom seen in shops. I've had my hands on them before and they are well build, different (read less boring) styles and give good cooling features. Second would be Antec on my list and 3rd Coolermaster. Also, Casetek (mostly known in Germany and the Benelux) makes great cases too but their design is a bit outdated. Inwin still makes sturdy cases but mostly more for mass production and not to stand out as an individual. last words will go to Thermaltake; leave it where it is, don't even come close to it. It's shiny, looks not to bad, but is flimsy... In my eyes not a good pick for a real computer enthusiast.. I know you didn't ask for opinions about the brands, but keep it just in mind. Mostly it's personal what you pick .
  7. That's hard to say, I think not as the PS/2 ports are likely hooked up to their own low I/O controller. If it works and doesn't work sometimes and the connectors are good, than I would try it. It's mostly capacitors that are charged and can't discharge, but also other electronic parts can keep up a charge and "block" other components out of the circuit... Mind you that it has been a long time that I digged really in problems with electronics at those levels, I did however ground some parts on motherboards to see if I could get them to work and they did...
  8. ZAP! Although it didn't hit the cable, it still can collect a big charge indeed. You are lucky that you didn't fry more. The internal NIC probably isn't going to work anymore.
  9. I've seen the problem before, even on my own system as it now. It' has 2 onboard NICs and one stopped being recognized but after some weeks it's back up again. It's must be something with a charged circuit and you should discharge that circuit or wait till the charge leaks away. Normally it can be done by just grounding the board without the PSU and battery connected but you have to try it out.
  10. A network card will cost you less than 4€ so i would buy one and test it, it always comes in handy .
  11. I see no problem there, you can just take it all apart and buy an external 3.5" SATA housing and put the drive back in, you can use it as it was .
  12. Hello willag, welcome to the forums. I never opend one of those maxtor drives but if you did and you came across something like this (click), you should be able to buy a new external SATA to USB 2.5" housing and place the drive in there. Your warranty is already been voided so there is nothing to lose, you can only win back your data and a perfectly well working 160GB 2.5" notebook drive as well. If you have more questions, please provide visual material as well so we can help you out better . EDIT: By the way, don't open the cover of that drive as shown in some pictures, you will destroy your drive when doing that.
  13. No need to look closer, it's know that these are the multi-5 language packs, most people will have the English Vista any way, and together with the Spanish language you cover the biggest part of the world.I never said that those are the ones for all languages .

  15. Zetto, you beat me to it, next time I will do my work faster .
  16. It's released now for public.
  17. Most of us are waiting for the update now for months as all updates could weigh as much as over 500MB, so, here it is: 32bit SP2 Windows Vista 64bit SP2 Windows Vista Application compatibility improvements Thanks to the rich instrumentation capability of Windows operating systems, we are able to understand the types of issues that our customers experience while respecting their personal information and privacy preferences. We use this information to focus improvements in Windows, but we also share this information with our software vendor partners to help improve the reliability and compatibility of non-Microsoft applications. For example, in SP2, Spysweeper and ZoneAlarm, now work with POP3 e-mail accounts. Our goal for SP2 is that applications that are written using public APIs and that run on the Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 operating systems will continue to work as designed. Microsoft has already released several application compatibility updates which allow more applications to work seamlessly for the end user. These appear in SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, but they are also available through Windows Update. Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 contain additional application compatibility fixes for individual applications. For more information about previously released compatibility updates, refer to article 947562 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Hardware ecosystem support and enhancements: SP2 adds support for the 64-bit central processing unit (CPU) from VIA Technologies, which adds the ID and vendor strings for the new VIA 64-bit CPU. SP2 integrates the Windows Vista Feature Pack for Wireless, which contains support for Bluetooth v2.1 and Windows Connect Now (WCN) Wi-Fi Configuration. Bluetooth v2.1 is the most recent specification for Bluetooth wireless technology. SP2 improves performance for Wi-Fi connections after resuming from sleep mode. SP2 includes updates to the RSS feeds sidebar for improved performance and responsiveness. SP2 includes ability to record data to Blu-Ray Disc media. Operating system experience updates SP2 includes Windows Search 4.0, which builds on Microsoft’s search technology with improved indexing and search relevance. It also helps find and preview documents, e-mail (including signed e-mail messages), music files, photos, and other items on the computer. The search engine in Windows Search 4.0 is a Microsoft Windows® service that is also used by programs such as Microsoft Office Outlook® 2007 and Microsoft Office OneNote® 2007. Autotuning Diagnostics in SP2 now interprets current network conditions when implementing Windows scaling. This feature includes full netsh support. SP2 improves Windows Media Center (WMC) in the area of content protection for TV. SP2 removes the limit of 10 half open outbound TCP connections. By default, SP2 has no limit on the number of half open outbound TCP connections. Enterprise improvements SP2 provides the Hyper-V virtualization environment as a fully integrated feature of Windows Server 2008, including one free instance with Windows Server 2008 Standard, four free instances with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and an unlimited number of free instances with Windows Server 2008 Datacenter. SP2 increases the authentication options for WebDAV redirector, enabling Microsoft Office users greater flexibility when authenticating custom applications using the WebDAV redirector. SP2 provides an improved power management (both on the server and the desktop), which includes the ability to manage these settings via Group Policy. SP2 improves backwards compatibility for Terminal Server license keys. Windows Server 2008 changed the licensing key from 512 bytes to 2,048 bytes which caused clients using older Terminal Server versions to fail. SP2 allows legacy license keys on Citrix applications to work with Windows Server 2008 Terminal Server. Setup and deployment improvements The SP2 standalone installer: Provides a single installer for both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Includes the ability to detect an incompatible driver and either block service pack installation or warn users of any potential loss of functionality. Provides better error handling and descriptive error messages where possible. Improves manageability through logging in the system event log. Provides a secure install experience. Includes the ability to service the installer post release. SP2 also includes a Service Pack Clean-up tool (Compcln.exe) which helps recover the hard disk space by permanently deleting previous versions of files (RTM and SP1) that are being serviced by SP2. The Service Pack Clean up tool can also be run offline while creating slipstream images to reduce the size of the image.
  18. Do you run Vista by the way?
  19. Hello Ric, welcome to the forums. Your system is now based on a NVIDIA GeForce 6150, those chipsets show a lot of heat problems as they are mostly equipped with small heat sinks. It would be wise to upgrade to an AMD based motherboard, a 780G/700 or the more expensive 790G/750 will do fine, personally I would go with the brand Gigabyte and their "Ultra Durable 3" versions. The RAM is now based on 1GB, 2GB would give you a better overall performance especially when you use Windows Vista, plus, if you have only one RAM module you would have the graphics do their job at 64bit wide memory bus while with 2 equal sized RAM modules you will get a 128bit wide memory bus. What are the problem you are facing now?
  20. That's just done on purpose to keep the geeks happy .Indeed, winRAR integrates smoothly into the windows GUI and that's what I like, just a right click, select and done...
  21. Wow, that video card bends a lot under the load of the cooling system, I would do something to support the card better.
  22. Cool! Now I don't have to test it before keeping it .
  23. The step will be solid "disks" any way. Just a few months and we will use contacts between the Flash chips without the wires (read longer circuits) plus Toshiba is starting his 32nm 64Gbit chips next month or so. The 12cm disc is already 30 years old!
  24. Hooray!!I like and use winRAR now for years, this is something nice. Let us see if it realy faster .
