  1. Or try to flash the BIOS, or better replace the BIOS chip with a new one, flashed with the latest BIOS you can find. Sounds like a bad chip that sometimes can't be read. Other than that I can only say it's a now faulty motherboard, hard to say why...
  2. He was fishing for that , he does post pictures like that just to shock us!
  3. There is no such function to enable nonlinear sound from a soundcard/chip as it's an effect that is generated AFTER it leaves the speak(s)/(sound)driver(s)/any other sound source...
  4. Ah, the good old days , website looks okay and I understand it's work in progress. Keep up the good work!
  5. What has netflix to do with "modern computing"? there are so many devices that can be used with netflix that most of us won't even use a PC for it; hardware used for most 98 machines can't even handle videostreams any way (or on real low res). People use an outdated OS as their hardware AND software is outdated mostly, but just serve them well.
  6. Yup, you would be happy with the 1kB expansion board, all black and white too! Also based on that same Z80 used in the MSX 1 . Darn, I was 7 back then...
  7. Just a bit shorter than that CPU indeed. I was more a Zilog 80 user, and MicroSoft eXtended (MSX) user with Basic!
  8. Hi Den, how would this compare in your eyes? CPU with integrated graphics vs. dedicated AGP video card? A few more words would be welcome.
  9. Sorry for the late reply: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%208%20-%2064 AMD Chipset Drivers 49.7 MB 13.12 9/18/2013 The package is newer, but the ATA/ACHI driver might be the same as the one you have now.
  10. I've edited the topic tile as an example, so other people can find this topic as well, and help/ask about your problem.
  11. I've looked into this but more at the caching and DHCP server side, but never found something useful that runs on Windows. Would be nice to see what our members have to say about it although this topic should be in the network section, but I'll leave it here for now.
  12. 70 Bucks for some hinges, well, just get used ones or a whole screen with housing for less, with a cracked LCD or so. Taken from your link to xBit Labs: Now, some of those 7 component categories they are referring to, are now more standardized, but not all indeed: The good: + Hard disk drive; mSATA (SSD) or SATA is now standard, mSATA doesn't even require a caddy. + Optical drive; Obsolete these days, but the last ones, from +/-2008 or up were all SATA, front-plates could be swapped out so it would fit the contour of the notebook/laptop housing. + LCD panel; Most of them use the same connector and have the same fixture points to place them inside the housing, sure we are talking about (W)LED displays and not with CCFL. The bad: - Battery-pack; still a pain the behind, especially when it comes to closed "slim" notebooks/laptops... - Customizable notebook panel... do we really need that? Sure it provides more bling but most of us will not need more than some volume, power, wifi and touchpad button; they can be part of the keyboard as well. - Power adapters: Some day they will be all the same, and some are compatible already, for example Dell and HP share some of the same connector and thus voltage, also Lenovo and Asus same to be the same in many, but it is indeed still a mess. - Keyboards: Not standardized, it got even worse; some keyboards are one part with the housing, especially on the slim models. Note that the list above doesn´t apply for Apple notebooks/laptops, no comments there...
  13. The 3.3v line is used for a hotswap function as well, mSATA is used on many desktop intel motherboards today and can be placed in some PCI-E sloths in laptops (make sure that the UEFI or BIOS sees it and can boot from it), just as a sidenote.
  14. Dencorso, In your case it was different as the BIOS didn't work with a complete different produced CPU. In this case the E4300 CPU only differs by multiplier of the E4700 (same lithography and might even have the same stepping), 99.9% sure it will work. In the worst case the OP would need to buy a P4 LGA775 CPU to flash it, and they are real cheap these days on ebay. But what my question is, why such an outdated chipset, with SATA1, AGP and DDR1.
  15. Why still buy a motherboard that has AGP and DDR1? Are you using a special AGP card on it? Out of the box that motherboard will work with an E4300 so voltage isn't a problem, might be that is sees it as an unknown CPU with an incorrect FSB multiplier, but I don't see why it would not work. You can flash it when it boots up to get the latest BIOS running if needed. Still wondering why that board?
  16. 99.9% Of the video cards that you can buy still support VGA (DVI to VGA adapter will come with 99% of the retail cards) so for 90USD is wasn´t the best pick. Flash uses mostly CPU so you will get some improvement with a videocard but not much indeed. The HDMI support audio as well, and they can be used as a monitor, you just need to find the real native resolution of the screen; eg. 1366*768 screens might be natively 1280*720 as the downscale, 1080p screens are natively 1920*1080 so no problem there. There are also plasma screens that are 1024*768 in 16:9 format. For 90USD you could have had a HD7750 that has 60% more balls over a a GT640...
  17. And what makes me that? Happy birthday to you as well . Thank you guys, I had a relax and good day yesterday, the beers and BBQ will be this weekend, all invited (I have to be quick, soon I'll be 40!)!
  18. No need to get confused, it's just a lot cheaper to build a 95W VRM (voltage regulator module) than a 125W one, thus making the board a low-end board (just less features, cheaper electronics). Now, good that you mentioned that you are going to overclock, in that case your PSU will not be adequate; get something new in the 750W range. The new AMD GPUs look nice on paper indeed, I´m also waiting to get some real-world benchmarks from the heavier games (like BF4). Note that most games theses days are CPU hungry as well (especially multi-player games).
  19. I´ve never had it with motherboard but do with video cards that show a messed up the screen; they show lines on the screen after a hot-start. Problem with the video cards were, that they don't "forget" the status they were in, like some capacitor isn't releasing it's voltage when it should, leaving a mess in the memory. I guess you already swapped PSU, RAM, SSD and CPU, played with the BIOS and disabled turbo-mode of the CPU as well? CPU is new so it might be, like Ponch said, that there is a BIOS update needed, but you already know that .
  20. The Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 with 2GB that it has now and 2GB extra (28USD *) will work fine with windows 7 64bit, especially when you put in a HD6670 for 60USD * (total 88USD *). Now, you could upgrade to a twice as fast system for less than 171USD, that's 83USD more than a video and RAM upgrade but you get a CPU that uses less power, has new instruction sets, and does a job in about half the time compared to the E7400, plus it will provide USB 3.0, SATA 6gbps. The integrated graphics from intel might be enough for the things you do with the PC, it will have no problems to reproduce 1080p and blueray and will even run older games. Sure it doesn't have the graphics power of an HD6670 but like I said you might not need that power. This is the list op components that would be the heart of your system: Intel Celeron G1610 Ivy Bridge 2.6GHz LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80637G1610 for 50USD * GIGABYTE GA-B75M-D3H LGA 1155 Intel B75 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard for 75USD * G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9D-4GBXM for 46USD * You might be able to sell the motherboard, CPU and RAM you have now for 60USD on ebay. * Prices are plus taxes.
  21. I did and still do that (even the re-balling UV), but not everybody has the right tools, eyes and experience to do that. Some people, like us, like to make old stuff like new, or even better. The above wan't mend as sarcasm .
  22. Darn, didn't know you bought a USB 3.0 card, that might not work as some cards will need drivers for it to work... Any way, so you can boot from USB on the motherboard, but didn't try to boot with that same USB stick in the USB 3.0 card? Looks like a lot of hassle for a supermarket-PC , better get that motherboard of ebay... To bad you don't live in Italy else Jaclaz would fix it for fun . I know that i would be kicking that PC around the room by not, to get my part of fun out of it .
  23. In that case stick with cards around 50USD like the ATI/AMD HD6570 (650MHz GPU) or the 60USD HD6670 (800MHz GPU), both have a 480:24:8 core configuration that would give you enough power for modern games at high settings on a 720p resolution or at low settings on 1080p. It will reproduce blu-ray and H.264 1080p with 5.1 sound trough HDMI without any problem. These cards will do DX 11, but Windows XP will only do DX 9. New, soon to be released, cards will support DX 11.2 but you will need Windows 8.1 for that...
