  2. I've had this BENQ DVD DD DW1640 for over 2 years now and I have burnt many hundreds of CDs and DVDs, maybe 1000+. I'm having this erratic problem where 4/5 DVDs will fail to burn. The progress gets to 95-96% and then Fails. I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2 nLited w/ SP3 installed overtop... yeah it's messy. (Don't accuse nLite and tell me to use a fresh copy because I've been using this installation for 2 years and never had a burning related problem until now.) I've tried Nero 7.9.6.0 and 8.3.2.1. I've cleaned the inside of the drive with compressed air. I've disconnected and cleaned the connectors and reconnected, ensuring a secure connection. I've looked for firmware updates and they say I'm up-to-date. I'm using Verbatim DVD+R 16x. My drive supports 16x. I was able to burn a CD+R and all 5 of the DVD+DLs I purchased which were also Verbatim. In Nero I'm using the DVD-ROM (UDF) format to burn 4+GB ISOs. The disc method is "Disk-At-Once". Can I provide anymore info? Any solutions? Thanks, Jeremy
  3. I recently bought Diskeeper 2008 Home Edition. I'm sick and tired of manually (or even scheduling) a defrag. Diskeeper created the original Windows Defrag API for Windows which is used by every other defragmenter. If they made the foundation for defragmentation of the Windows operating system and they've been doing it since Windows came to be, then they obviously know the best way to do it. I installed a couple games the other night and analyzed my drive with the (now freeware) UltimateDefrag 1.72 and everything is placed sequentially and contiguously from the outer-to-inner tracks and not one file is fragmented. The only thing that may make me switch to PerfectDisk is that Diskeeper Home Edition has a HDD GB limit of 750GB and my OS drive (C:) is 500GB. When the days comes that I have a 750GB or 1TB drive, I'd need to upgrade to a more expensive version of Diskeeper or switch to another. PerfectDisk doesn't have any limits in this regard and does perform automatic defragmentation / file placement so I'll see what happens.
  4. The classic one for me, always. Usability.
  5. An upgrade from Home to Pro? You also refer to this as a clean install? If it hangs at 34 minutes than I will assume it is a pirated/customized install CD that has something either removed or integrated that doesn't agree with your system. Your best bet would be to obtain a legit known-good install CD.
  6. I second that when I ever want to make an AVI but I prefer full quality. I try to start with 720p and if not I try for DVD.

  8. http://www.spyarsenal.com/familykeylogger/ That's the one I use.
  9. Use a freeware tool like FileZilla to setup a home FTP server.
  10. If you do not have a backup of the registry that was wiped out, then you will need to reinstall the games. Pretty obvious.
  11. Happy Belated Birthday, Nick. *hugs and kisses*
  12. Have an uplifting spiritual experience thus triggering repressed memories; one of which being the "this is what I want my password to be" memory.
  13. I use the Repackager module of Macrovision's AdminStudio to isolate applications by method of virtualization which can preview registry changes and file changes in true treeview style and output in formats such as HTML and Plain Text. I use an evaluation copy within a saved state in VMware so each time I restore I still have 29 days left. Nothing else has even come close to matching the capabilities of this program.
  14. So you're calling others n00bz for not knowing how, yet you're the one asking in the first place... I believe that would make you, kingfire, King of n00bz.
  15. I don't worry about security at all because I have a system (aka methods of prevention). The following have been stated countless times before. 1. Use a hardware firewall such as a router. 2. If you have a wireless internet connection, make sure to properly encrypt it. 3. Don't use Internet Explorer. Not simply because many are unfamiliar with how to properly configure the security settings, but because of its integration with the OS. If you get a browser hijacker, then Windows is likely to suffer along with IE. 4. Don't keep personal files on your PC. Keep them on a flash drive. Flash drives are getting larger and cheaper by the month. I have a 16GB and I have all my work stuff and portable applications on it. If you do keep personal files on your PC, encrypt them or compress them with a strong alphanumeric password. 5. Don't download from Kazaa or LimeWire or Shareaza. If you're going to download, use torrents (uTorrent ftw). Some will add "Do not use the Administrator account". If you have a system as mentioned above than this is not necessary IMHO. Maintaining a secure environment is not as hard as people think. I have a router a wired internet connection and use Opera. I don't have anything to worry about as far as my computer and files are concerned.
  16. Already did. It's worse than UltraDefrag in that it fails to defragment all files and does not perform file placement. Not being included in my final review.
  17. I used to be picky about noise but as I am about to be a father, if it doesn't sound like a constantly crying baby, I won't be paying any attention to it.

  19. Well, my Antec P180 (which is a bit modded) sits under my desk in the corner of the livingroom and I usually have my headphones on when at the PC ans if not I don't pay attention. During the initial boot-up with it installed as I was still sitting on the floor looking at everything, I didn't hear anything coming from the drive so I'd say it's silent/quiet.
  20. I don't usually concern myself with benchmarks but both PuntoMX and another friend inspired me this once. I just installed my new Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA2 32MB drive. I did a benchmark to compare it to my existing Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB SATA2 8MB. Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB SATA2 8MB (jumper off for SATA2) Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA2 32MB (jumper on) Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA2 32MB (jumper off for SATA2) Thought you might find these interesting.
  21. Tested it. It fails to defragment all files. I am disqualifying it in my final defragmenter comparison review. False. When it comes to being open-source, JkDefrag is the absolute best. I've tested it. It will be one of the top in the list in my defragmenter comparison review. No defragmenter exists that will guarantee you a 100% defragmented HDD after the first pass. It could just as easily be the other way around. I have seen freeware/open source defragment drives further after commercial software was finished and vise versa. If the defragmenter successfully defragments the drive and performs file placement which both JkDefrag and O&O do, it really doesn't matter in a real-world scheme which one you use. I'd logically go with the free one.
