  1. I would advise against using any of the dozens of generic registry cleaners you find on Google. A lot of companies will go to Rent-A-Coder and pay a programmer $1000 for a month's worth of coding them a quick P.O.S. cleaner just to make a bit of money from some poor sucker. I would stick with ones that are very popular and updated like JV16, CCleaner and maybe TuneUp Utilities and Ace Utilities. Although, JV16 is made by the guy who pretty much started the whole registry cleaning genre back in the 1990's with his original RegCleaner. Google Search 1 Google Search 2 Notice the similarities in the results? One of the important priorities for JV16 right now is Vista X64 support. He is a friend of mine and I will ask him next time I see him online when this will be available.
  2. It is an insult to do what you are doing. Why don't you just install FFDShow and watch your DVD in Media Player Classic or KMPlayer?
  3. It's been a while since I did that. For free registry cleaning I use CCleaner. I am friends with the developer of JV16 PowerTools and I did some beta testing so I got a free license. Btw, JV16 does both reg cleaning and defragmenting. Zxian and myself can vote for JV16 for defragmenting better than the NTRegOpt program.
  4. I would rather solve the issue of my symbols. I prefer not to depend on others.
  5. Still have incorrect symbols. Attached is the log for this attempt. Thank you for your help thus far, Cluberti. Log.txt
  6. Once you have the dump open in windbg, then, go to the bottom box and type ".symfix" (minus the quotes). Hit enter, then run your commands again. I did that and got: No downstream store given, using C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows\sym
  7. I did this however I am still getting the same warning box that I do not have the correct symbols. I even rebooted.
  8. I read up on Cluberti's thread about creating a .dmp file of a hanging application. I then found DebugWiz linked on this page. I request that anyone familiar with analyzing the results of the generated log file to hopefully provide me with some indication of the problem. This application is hanging occasionally on my aunt-in-law's PC which is: Windows XP Home SP2 AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 1.83 GHz 512MB of RAM 27.6 GB free out of 31.4 GB Virus/spyware free Defragmented I have attached the debuglog.txt file. I will add that in the log file it states: ************************************************************************* *** *** *** *** *** Your debugger is not using the correct symbols *** *** *** *** In order for this command to work properly, your symbol path *** *** must point to .pdb files that have full type information. *** *** *** *** Certain .pdb files (such as the public OS symbols) do not *** *** contain the required information. Contact the group that *** *** provided you with these symbols if you need this command to *** *** work. *** *** *** *** Type referenced: kernel32!pNlsUserInfo *** *** *** ************************************************************************* If you need any further information I will be happy to provide it. I have no IT certifications so I learn as I go and if someone can give me some guidelines on how to interpret the log files that would also be greatly appreciated. Edit - I updated the attachment with a slightly more correct one ran with Windbg rather than the DebugWiz.exe I found. debuglog.txt
  9. How did I miss that... huh. Must have been really tired when I was checking. Sorry about that.
  10. Martin H, a well-informed position on the similarities between defragmenters and knowing what is best for the harddrive. You're alright.
  11. Anyone know of good freeware software to view CHM files and also to merge PDFs?

  13. You can use the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer to save the print job as a .TIF image which you can later convert to your desired image format.
  14. If DirectX 9.0c is supported and stable in Linux then I might be ditching Windows completely on my main desktop.
  15. Or use a Linux live CD.
  16. I do not provide links very often because anyone has the ability to use Google. It will remove the installation-related registry keys/values for any program that uses the Windows Installer Engine. Winamp, for example, doesn't.
  17. Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and remove Roxio from its list. This is caused by leftover registry entries pointing to the location where the .MSI file used to exist. You either deleted it or moved it. In either case, the registry entries need to be removed which is what WICU will do.
  18. Are you guys trying to give this guy a technological orgasm? His old PC is 6 years old. My old CPU (AMD 3700+ Single Core, 2.2 GHz) would blow his mind, and you are recommending him to go Quad Core? Do I hear overkill? Also, if you don't have any experience building systems than I would like to say "Be careful".
  19. Take two... where did you read it? Can you provide a link to the source of an article? Or maybe it was just some 13 year old's blog. Who knows. I am not bitching, just simply indicating that your posts rarely consist of any real valuable information worth reading. I know it is harsh, but it's the truth. I'd love to hear jcarle's take.
  20. Ok, so no difference except for the factor of gravity bending a disk... get real... and a clue. IMO, having a disk mounted vertically would have this disk-bending gravity influence its ability to rotate moreso than it bending in a horizontal position. Yeah, it would seem reasonable to you. Where did you hear this? Source? Where's the backing of the claim? Or more accurately, a theoretical possibility but extremely unlikely realistic outcome. The HDD is going to fail due to mechanical failure in its ability to spin before gravity bends it. Ouch, my horizontally placed arm is starting to bend from the immense gravitational force here...
