  1. I'm not as picky about it, I love Skype. A friend of mine in Mexico (love you Punto ) switched ISPs and now our ping times are 115ms (as opposed to 150+ms) even with Skype running. We play HL2DM and BF2 with no lag and it just rocks. I've very happy with Skype.
  2. If you can find the trojan yourself, then you alone have the ability to delete it whether through Unlocker, some program that will delete it at next reboot or by booting to a CD with a file manager (like a Live Linux distro or Reatogo Builder). Hell, technically FileMon can be classified as anti-malware. You can see every access/modify/write attempt made by any process so if IE is being screwed by spyware, you'll just have to surf through a log file until you find the suspicious file. I just use anti-virus to scan files I download. If I were to ever find a suspicious file (since I am very familiar with Windows files) I'd delete it myself using one of the methods I mentioned above.
  3. Maybe if you posted in the correct subforum...
  4. My point was that great and worthy processors come from more than one manufacturer. And I can read, thanks.
  5. Do you know how many variants of one virus there are out there? There are more variants than original viruses these days. Thousands. Not all virus scanners have identical virus definitions. NOD32 will get some that all others miss and vice-versa. It could be a false-positive which is to be expected with in-depth heuristic scanning. But that heuristic scanning is what has kept NOD32 on top of every "in-the-wild" virus in the past decade or so. Some people will argue that you can't rely on only one scanner. My above paragraph explains exactly why. Long story short, it's unfair to diss a scanner because it misses out on one particular variant or describes a non-malicious file as a false-positive. Why don't you contribute something in return by e-mailing Eset and let them know so they can investigate and either add the virus to their database or update their signatures to properly classify the file? Virus scanners help you stay clean, so help them in return to become better scanners.
  6. Try Eraser.
  7. If you are going to narrow your own choices to one manufacturer, then you shouldn't create a topic asking for which CPU/socket to purchase. Sometimes the answer is AMD, other times it is Intel. I always used to consider myself partial to AMD, but from what I hear/read about Intel processors these days... - Less power consumption - Less heat generating - Extreme performance - AMD's recent financial situations that are plastered on every technological news site you can find I wouldn't mind a C2D... but I'd have to upgrade my mobo and thus my RAM as well just to get one.
  8. You'd think so, but the stock CPU heatsink fan is much quieter than the NV5. And cards themselves are silent, btw.
  9. FileMon and/or Process Explorer.
  10. Are you talking about anti-spyware, anti-virus and firewall software? You don't need to buy anything and I wouldn't advise getting a suite of bundled software. Ad-Aware SE (2007 RC1 this summer) Spybot S&D Windows Defender Spyware Blaster CWShredder Avast AntiVir Comodo Firewall Pro Incase you're interested in learning more about numerous firewall products, check this link.
  11. I wouldn't waste space keeping all that old software, especially if you have some old Norton Anti-Virus that only works on Windows 98. I'd just get rid of it all and start fresh with modern free software.
  12. Not all web sites are coded the same and not necessarily with only one langauge. For example, you've got HTML, CSS, XHTML, PHP, etc. If the website is years old, I'd suggest either DreamWeaver which will allow you to view what your code looks like while you code it, or NotePad++ which has syntax recognition and highlighting, as well as a tabbed interface. If you're unfamiliar with coding, a great website to start you off is http://www.w3schools.com. If you're taking this seriously, I hope you're better at interpreting web code than I am. Me + Modify + Save = FUBAR (F..cked Up Beyond All Recognition) I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Don't fret too much though, they're still around... you just can't see them now.
  13. .........
  14. I have no idea what you are saying, can you reword it better, please?
  15. You should have at least 512MB. See about getting more.
  16. Does anyone know of software I could use to remove the music of a 131 KB Lame-encoded MP3 I've made with Audacity and leave the voices in tact? I recorded the voices of the Star Fox guys in the SNES version. I've attached the file if anyone wants to give it a go themselves and upload the edited one back to this topic. Thanks, Jeremy
  17. Are you incapable of using Google? C'mon now... if they were hard to find I would provide the links, but I suppose I need to anyway... Download Ultimate BootCD v3.4 which contains MemTest. Burn it to a CD and boot to it. Either make sure your boot priority has CD/DVD-ROM set before Hard Disk or press F8 to get into the advanced boot options. Let MemTest run a full pass, or just run it overnight to allow multiple passes. If you have even 1 error, you'll need new RAM. If this happens and you're using two sticks of RAM, take one out and scan again to see which stick is bad. If your PC is under warranty, you should be able to get a free RAM replacement. If not, it won't be that expensive. SpeedFan. Just choose a mirror. Just take a screenshot of the window once it displays your temperatures and provide us with it. One thing though, hold down on the ALT key before you press the Print Screen button to capture only SpeedFan while it's the active window. Save it as .PNG in Paint or whatever image viewer/editor you use. Edit - Just to let you know ahead of time, higher temperatures are common with video cards in particular. While SpeedFan may not be totally accurate, if your card is 65C or more, then it's time to think about getting a compatible Silencer for it. If it has passive cooling (only a heatsink and no fan) then you should get a Silencer which is designed to both cool the GPU and blow the warm air out the rear of the case. If it does have a fan on it, it may be clogged with dust. If so, then your entire inside-case may need a thorough cleaning. Get a can of compressed air (do not use a vacuum cleaner!), take it outside, and spray the holy bejesus out of it. Take off the front panel and get in there also. Depending on the case, lots of dust can get clogged everywhere in there. I've seen some nasty looking nests in some PCs in the past. It would be best to provide pictures of your case and inside of it. If you can, that would be great.
  18. Well, we all have our preferences. What specifically are you referring to? Accessing options? Colors? I'd say make due with the GUI or get used to hotkeys because it's detection rate is terrific.
  19. There's more than one size of RAM stick. If there wasn't, mobos for today's servers would be as long as sidewalks.
  20. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...k.mspx?mfr=true Did you disable the Event Log? This will cause delay. How many services did you disable? Screenshot, please?
  21. Did you test your RAM like I recommended in the first post? How about checking your temperatures with SpeedFan? Let's not jump the gun here...
  22. And what is "too much" memory? Are you running on 256 MB of RAM? You are low on memory when Windows alerts you that you're virtual memory is low. This is caused by a low value set for the page file or a memory-intensive game like BF2 which eats 1GB+ easily. You're better off just getting more RAM.
  23. End-It-All is just a 3rd party process manager. I doubt the processes running in the background are his problem because Windows warns you if you're low on virtual memory before the game crashes. He's have to either have a small page file or play a game like Battlefield 2 which eats 1GB easily. ratiug, make sure you don't have anything else open while the game is running (for troubleshooting purposes). If you want to control the background processes, just use Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC) and Start > Run > msconfig > StartUp.
  24. How do you think everyone else is figuring out their own Services? They are doing trial-and-error. That's the point of the guide, to be of reference. Besides if you want to play games with optimal FPS, stick with XP. There's an article on Tom's Hardware that shows games running slower on Vista.
