1. yes, CDBurnerXP Pro is most likely the best freeware burning program. The only thing Nero does better afaik is DVD Video burning. Got a few unrecognised ones thanks to CDBXPP.
2. Miranda is crap. And I am talking about their v0.4 release. I tried enabling multiple plugins, no go. Then when I got the tabsrmm plugin to work, it was buggy as hell and repeatedly crashed Miranda. File transfers also suck a**. it needs a lot of work.
3. Hmm, the worst of them is indeed MSN (bloat-wise). It is an extremely functional and stable IM to use of course, but RAM wise, ugh. Trillian uses a fair bit of RAM as well, though with no contact windows open and it minimized, it is just under 2 MBs. Otherwise, normal activity consumes almost 10 MBs. Miranda is as lite as I like programs to be, but the bugginess is insane. I tried file transfers and tabsrmm plugin and the whole thing just caved in on itself. I even tried AMSN a few months back and as similar to MSN as it was, it was beta and didn't offer a whole lot of functionality. Their site has a "closed down" sign on it too and they are in danger of being put 6 feet under so I don't expect anything else from them. Ranking (IMO) 1. Trillian 2. MSN 3. Miranda
4. Haha, Miranda... hahah. The buggiest piece of software I've ever used. And I am talking about the v0.4 release that took them over a year to develop. Very lite yes, but I like things to actually work. But that's just me.
5. Anyone know how to erase parts of the registry manually (8-pass wipe method)?
6. Locked files? Can you explain? Do you mean, for example, the index.dat files that are always in use unless in Safe Mode?
7. I use East-Tec Eraser 2005. The GUI is kind of heavy and it isn't free, but it has such secure methods of file-wiping and so many applications and registry entries integrated that I can't do without it for security of file deletion. I'd use Eraser v5.7 (which is awesomely lite) but I don't know how to add in registry entries to my own "delete list". Plus, it takes longer to wipe files than ETE2005 does, but it's so lite that I'd use it if, as I said, I could put in reg entries. If I knew that, I'd switch instantly.
8. I think I can honestly say this is the best post anyone's made in this thread. This is what I mean when I say a simple "this rules" post just doesn't count. You nailed it Dexter.
9. Bloody hell, why can't File Managers be free!?
10. VMware is the best Virtual Machine software. Virtual PC has limited OS support.
11. I don't care if it's IE 10, I'm not using it.
12. Best in your opinion... not right to say they are ultimately better than everything else as different programs have pros and cons.
13. If you're expecting a Customer Service Representative to take your call immediately, you might want to do some of your own research.
14. Ok, I've figured it out on my own. The only 2 things now are - The resolution is smaller on my TV screen than my actual monitor. My monitor resolution is 1280X1024. My TV doesn't show all my of the monitor. - When I player Videos (which is kinda the whole purpose of this) it doesn't show on the TV, I'm guessing this is a setting I have to modify in the ATI Control Panel. 1. No longer matters since whenever a video is played, it plays full screen on my TV even when the video is minimized on the PC. 2. Fixed. Moderator can delete this.
15. What exactly would I need hardware and software wise in order to send audio/video from my PC to my TV? My VCR is a modern one with S-Video port. Any replies would be appreciated.
16. Xplorer2Lite. I like my file manager to look as much like Windows Explorer as possible. Also uses about 2 MBs less RAM than Total Commander.
17. I think Windows 98/ME should be put into the ground. Technology moves so fast and for people to be using Win98 in the year 2005 = 7 years old OS. ME is the crappiest OS ever made. It was basically an incomplete state of XP driven onto the market due to high consumer complaints so M$ had to give in whether or not their OS was ready. Anyway, I hate XP only because of all the bloat on it. They made it an automated installer and put so much garbage on it so everyone who would ever use a PC for any reason would find a way for it in XP. But eventually, people become more advanced with PCs and want to loosen things up. And that's why if I am ever to install XP on my PC or anyone else's... I'm using nLite. Someday nLite will go massively public and many people will know about it. It'll slim down Longhorn once that bloat comes out too. XP is actually a great OS once you trim the fat off it.
18. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoRecentDocsMenu"=dword:00000001 "NoRecentDocsHistory"=dword:00000001 Change the 1 at the end of both to 0, save as reg file and import.
19. 1By1 Directory Player
20. Using Firefox, it's built in pop-up blocker and absence of ActiveX Controls, having Java disabled and some JavaScript options disabled does the trick for me!
21.
Internet Explore, Dont see the point using Firefox cuz its "easy" i like fings to be fun lol and i neva had any IE faults yet [post="303002"][/post]
Well, the millions of other Firefox users certainly see the point in using IE (As mentioned numerous times throughout this ongoing thread). Internet experience is supposed to be "easy". Think about people who are sitting at the computer for the first time expecting to have a blast.
22. Why does this thread continue to get updated? Do you think after the first 3 pages, someone still won't get the hint that in order for them to find their preferred browser, they need to actually try them out? Many people use the same, many use different browsers. Why keep posting "Maxthon!", "Firefox!", "Opera!", "IE!"< etc? What difference does it make? All I say is that as long as it isn't IE, great.
23. I have a Dell so when I go into Setup, I get a blue screen and I get asked which partition I want formatted and then get asked if I really want to do this (nooo, I just said yes the first time for fun!). You wll lose all data! Which is the whole point... Is there a way I can specify in my WINNT.SIF file to automate this, so as soon as I select to boot from CD-ROM, I don't touch anything until Windows is installed?
24. WMP10Lite?
