i would recommend slipstreaming your updates manually. use WUD to download the updates and slipstream them with a .bat file. nlite can cause problems you dont want to have to support for your clients if used incorrectly.

If this is a laptop, then just reply with the manufacturer name and model # of the laptop and ill look for a compatible drive for it.

User specific settings for word 2007 are stored in: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Word12.pip Auto recovery documents are stored in: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\OFFICE\12.0 Various registry settings for word are stored in the registry at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word you can safely delete the contents of those folders (i checked by renaming) and only affect your user specific settings. perhaps something has gone wonky with your configuration files

Not EXACTLY what you asked for but might address the problem: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer Create a new DWORD Value of 'HideRunAsVerb' and set it to 1 will disable the GUI for Runas entirely -even the Properties->Advanced->Run with different credentials on a shortcut doesn't work (it's still there though) Restart explorer to see the differences. Thatll keep them from seeing your users in the gui but any level of user can find your list of users by simply typing 'net user' at a command prompt (assuming they can get a CMD window ) as for runas.exe, you cannot rename (windows file protection) it but you can copy it to another name and modify its file privileges your user cannot access it or if you want to disable runas entirely, just set the 'Secondary Logon' service to Disabled

well the first thing would be to add it as a scheduled task either using Command Line: at.exe 14:35 /interactive "cmdline of script" or Start - > Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Scheduled Tasks the problem is Task Scheduler runs under the system account and will run the script with system level privledges and all the profile specific variables are screwed up get http://www.robotronic.de/runasspc/ it allows you to create a cryptfile that embeds an admin accounts password for use with a utility similar to runas. (the cryptfile is only good for running the commands you specify) when creating your cryptfile with runasspcadmin.exe, set logon to Env under optional settings and the cmd will execute as whatever user is logged on whenever the script runs

see if you can figure out what refresh rate the game is setting your monitor to. Perhaps the monitor doesnt agree with that refresh rate and is trying to do an autoadjust/autoalign.

my guess is it would work on MCE but i haven't tried it. MCE is just XP SP2 with a few extra apps

Yeah use internet explorer for the one thing its good for: Windows/Microsoft Update and FF/opera for everything else P.S. ActiveX is not a feature its a liability -so i don't count that as something IE is good for.

I prefer gateways design over dells - the gateway has 1 cord going to the back of it and nojacks clustered at the back -all the standard motherboard type connectors are on the power brick plaus the gateway looks like its all 1 piece and the dell looks like a monitor on a stand with speakers attached. plus it has a gimpy keyboard (the touchpad is a nice touch but i wanna numpad) oh and i found the page that has the different versions http://www.gateway.com/programs/one/compare.php (Too bad they teamed up with Best Lie)

Ill put in a second recommendation for Ubuntu because the livecd is essentially the same exact OS that you would install but minus a few things like 3d acceleration and wifi drivers i dont think the session saving feature you are asking for is doable without building your own liveCD (which is not an easy task) as for the USB drive thing, i think the Ubuntu liveCD will automount it if its present at boot time

actually steadystate does (in a kinda group policies for dummies sorta way), I was playing with it today on a machine i took out of service and was gonna image and I locked down an administrator user using the maximum setting and literally the only thing i could do was click start, highlight Programs, Accessories, Accessibility or Logoff. that was it. Ctrl+Shift+Esc, Ctrl+Alt+Del, WIN+D, WIN+R, No CD/USB Autorun, No changing the start menu or clock, no changing the desktop(which had nothing on it), and no launching browser. (even had a white/blacklist of .exes to use) Once I enabled IE by logging out and using Ctrl+Alt+Del 2x to show the classic login (SteadyState hid all admins on the welcome -nice touch), IE was in SUPER lockdown mode. No Toolbar Buttons, No Favorites, No Options, No Help, No View Fullscreen, No View Source, No Open or Save as, No Page Right-Clicking, No VBS, Javascript, or Flash(ActiveX). It made me smile and do my "Evil IT Guy" laugh I would never deploy a machine in this state for anything other than a kiosk but its always nice to know the option was there. The best part was after logging in as admin, NONE of the GPs applied to the locked down user affected the admin account (which isnt impossible to do manually i know but pretty sweet when it works without tinkering) But this is because all the apps present on the system obey the rules of the OS(mostly) if this machine got hit with a virus, rootkit, or malware (however unlikely with the OS so restricted) then the infection would likely stay resident on the PC untill caught by an good AV program or the system was rebooted and of course it could possibly through a reboot with steadystate -i have no test data for that scenario in steadystate (YET) as for persistence with Deepfreeze, I've had machines with some pretty nasty rootkits installed that got wiped out on a simple reboot. I'll prolly piece together a little review/comparison of deepfreeze vs steadystate once I have a better idea of steadystates features.

definatly, but i dont think the microsoft tool wont let you change keys if WGA has been tampered with.

yeah it thinks mozilla, firefox, and spellcheck aren't words too which is funny because office spellcheck will correct misspellings of microsoft and mozilla

There is a MS supported method for updating your CDKEY which should stop those WGA popups http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50346&clcid=0x409 However if it doesnt work, youll need to do a full reinstall
