Recomendation of a good router for heavy use
tarquel replied to cypher_soundz's topic in Hardware Hangout
hehe never cud put the Professor's mubbles/"episode's" into words lol nice work My 3Com 3CRWE754G72-A used to reset alot when using alot of connections in p2p. I managed to update the firmware that solved the problem - think it was one of the latest firmware's avaliable for it (in case anyone has one and wants to know). I know it sounds obvious and I'm sure you've already tried it, but have you visited the manufacturer's site for a firmware update? I know the model I've got is buggy at best, but it cost me a cool £100 so it wasnt a cheap one - its not avaliable anymore but the newer model is meant to be nice 'n' stable - dont know the exact model offhand tho sorry. Regards, Nath. -
intel extreme graphics chipset's are notoriously crap at games - thats why i'm after a radeon mobility 9700 (orr similar) based centrino machine. Light definately a good thing tho - i'm a weakling hehe thanks for your post rendrag Regards, Nath

it *may* have something to do with the DOSATA option in the xpc config ini but I'm not 100%. Try setting it to NO i.e. DOSATA=NO and see if that makes any difference and report back please. Regards (and welcome to msfn if noone else has said it hehe), N.

Welcome to MSFN craig.miller Are you using a evaluation version of some sort? If so, this may be the case - someone else has had the same error message in a previous post but havent got the link handy i'm afraid. Good luck, N.

Welcome to MSFN psybernoid I think i'm right in saying that it wont be supported anytime soon. And definately not beta or evaluation version of operating system's - only the "real deal" will be, as has already been the case. I'm not saying I speak for the master (GM) hehe but I only imagine this to be the case, based on previous questions & post's regarding beta/eval versions of OS' It may happen, but I wouldnt hold out hope just yet Best regards, N.

hehe guess I was waiting for that to be said hehe no good to me tho but there we have it... ...um....u didnt mention price Regards, N.

Just a quick "2 cents".... When building a pc, always try (where possible) to get a good psu with your case. I dont mean <amount-of-Watts> but a quality case like a Antec, Aopen, etc. and not a case that costs £20 and comes with a 350/400W psu by an un-heardof manufacturer. You'll probably end up with a totally unstable system and wonder why, even if all the other components are high quality. Get a good £50 (or more) case (which includes a PSU by the same manuacturer) as you'll end up having a more smooth running pc. And like some have mentioned previously, when choosing the components you want - make sure you always research every component to avoid getting problems later. If it takes you more than a month to do so, then you've probably researched enough - never skimp on good stuff. (to those in the uk - the new KFC adverts are hellish funny arent they? hehe) Regards, Nath

thanks for your post newsposter I know emachines make laptops hehe i wouldnt get one of them tho refurbs are no good to me as if i'm gonna spend a good amount of money on a laptop, I wouldnt buy a 2nd-hand/refurbished one - just like i wouldnt with a desktop (with desktops, there really isnt a need in my case). This is on the basis that I could buy one and 4 months down the line (or even a month), it could die on me and then I'll have spent a fair amount on something that is now of no use. For me, it's better to buy new and in the case of a laptop, get insurance on it as it wont be sitting at home all the time - i'll be taking it to work and taking it further afield on the train - so I wouldnt want to risk something happening to it or it accidentally getting damaged, thus the need for the insurance. I may be able to get work to pay for the 3 yr insurance on it @ about £150. I agree tho, I would spend stupid amounts on one as there isnt a need (in my case) to do so. My maximum is about £900-£1000 (GB pounds) which will take me a fair amount of months to save for. As it will be connecting to a domain at work, it's gonna have to be XP Pro too :S altho maybe i could get a license thru work for that and just get the laptop with xp home Cheers, N.

Astalavista - i think it would take me a lot longer than a few months to have enough for one of those sony viao's hehe The cheaper of the range are good, but unfortunately, have only the Intel Extreme VGA chipset on them which of course is no good..... ....just can't justify spending that much cash on a laptop. bart of borg sounds nice, but if it costs a bundle - unfortunately - no good. Plus my supplier, where i can get a bit of a saving, doesnt sell Asus laptops - only the usual manufacturers like hp/compaq, toshiba, acer, IBM, Sony, etc Anyone else? anyone rate the acer laptops and which one if so?

Hi all Just wanted to start a topic regarding laptops and what everyone's personal choice would be in getting one, based on performance (dur!). Another reason is that I'm looking to get one in the coming months and as I dont deal with laptops much from day-to-day, I was wondering what everyone thought. --- EDIT: Finally, I've saved enough and have ordered the laptop I've chosen. Take a look forward to *this* post to find out the details. I'll leave the rest of this post to show what I was weighing up previously. Thanks everyone. --- To give you a rough idea what I'm after, I was looking at something like the Acer TravelMate 4502WLMi or the 4502LCi but i've no idea what they are like and how reliable they are. I like batt life of centrino's and i've heard that they are quick machines for what they are but how do they fair games-wise? I'm not talking Far Cry or anything, but games like C&C:Generals I'd like to play on it - not super high resolution either. Anyhow, please post comments or thoughts on what you feel a great laptop is for performance, price & reliability. PS Probably gonna get some laptop insurance [just in case my girlfriend drops it hehe] Regards, Nathan.

Hi Just a few tips and reminders: Never overlook the psu btw I know you've added a new 300W one but never use the cheap ones - they are unstable - even if they dont look it. Buy a quality one Just a reminder... Also, you didnt (or am i half asleep) mention the graphics card? what is it and are you using a stable driver for it? Memory could be a problem - some just dont like some motherboards. Never go with unbranded and go for a good make and preferable, check the motherboard manufacturer's website for a compatibility list too. Have you tried using a different HD (i know you've tested it but even a seemingly good HD that tests ok can still be the cause) - if you have an old one that works lying around, give it a try too. If all else fails, i'd have to say that the motherboard looks like its dying and as puntoMX said, it would be best to get another one. For the system you have, its not too expensive to get a decent motherboard and not only may it cure the problem, it may give u an additional performance boost if you get a good one Regards & good luck, Nath.

Welcome to MSFN preacher Alas, I've said it before in other posts and I'll say it again here, please post in the right section of the MSFN forum. What you are asking about has nothing to do with XPCREATE. Remember to search using various different methods of input before you post a question and if you start a topic, keep it relevent to the subject. I would say you should be looking at the Unattended Windows section of the MSFN forum. Thanks & best regards, Nath.

hehe now i'm getting real confused @Samuel: Dim r As Long r = OpenThisFile("c:\test.txt") If r <> 0 Then MsgBox "Failed to open file." End If That opened up the file great but i also got the message box too hehe :S Weird thing tho - when complied to a exe, it will open a exe or txt file no problem but it wont open a exe by just running/testing the project. Ah well, can live with that hehe Regarding what you said about the VB runtimes, yes, i understand all that and i wouldnt install a app to where they are installed - it would be stupid yes hehe - but remember, that this is a standalone exe file which isnt gonna be "installed" anywhere. It's a exe on a CD as being used as a menu system for running stuff from the cd or from windows, so we were refering to placing the vb dll file on the cd where the app is located (at the root) to get the app to run on machines where the vb runtimes arent installed.... ....how would i perform a check when my app opens/runs and how do i get it to install the vb runtimes if they arent present? The trouble is a) This is all new to me B) i need it to open all sorts of files - txt, exe, jpg, bat, cmd, html, etc. c) some things will have switches after them, and d) will either wait or not wait for the app to finish running/installing Is there some easy piece of code that will work for all this? I've got snippets from this page and now I cant remember which is what and what works best hehe I'd like it in module form - thanks guys for showing the benefit of this and how it works - but i'm still at a loss really. One seems to work for one thing where another doesnt. Any full-proof code for all the above? Yours hopefully, Nath.

i am curious (as always hehe) to know how to slipstream the sp1 into the package Anyone care to know the info on this or ryan, is this another really complex one? Cheers, N.

Please read this!! http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...ndpost&p=158778 The project is not open source and just because it is in cmd file, does mean you should.are allowed to open it and view its contents (read the EULA when installing/unpacking xpcreate) Regards, N. PS GM - think you better sticky your post again...permenantly hehe

AT Command (how to use it ?)
tarquel replied to sixpack's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
although its pretty much the same for most server systems, you failed to mention what OS it will be used on hehe Can you expand more on what you want it to do and so on? Cheers, N. -
Admin Project help

Hi there I know they use DeepFreeze on some of the public-based school systems - for me it serves no purpose when you use GP to its fullest. Anyhow... I would suggest doing it manually to one and imaging it after you've finished to the rest if they are all the same type and contain the same software. I know this is no real help but I cant imagine that you're gonna find it easy to do - especially given the way deepfreeze works - but then again, anything & everything is possible hehe Regards, N. -
Hi again. Right - gotcha Will give that ago - in other words - use both types in order to achive everything. - your method - will launch a app and wait for the application to end before returning/moving on to the next line of code - the method i had - launches files based on what application they are registered with in windows i.e .txt, reg, bat, etc. but doesnt wait before executing the next line of code (Think it will launch a app with switches too - I never fully tested it) Thanks for your help and hope this helps others too. Indeed your right when you say that i dont need it to wait as mostly everything I want to accomplish wont need to wait for the next line of code - as its mainly a slightly glorified app/tool launcher hehe Now if only I knew whether adding the library file to the same directory as the app will work (negating the need for VB6 Runtime Files to be installed in windows). As I wont be doing anything more complex than what I've mentioned here - the app isnt gonna depend on much If anyone can comment on this, please feel free Regards & many thanks again, Nath

Hi jdoe Great stuff - the modShellWait.bas module worked and had no problem with running a exe file using that method - here's an example of what I tried: RunCmd "R:\temp\build\test\sb.exe /silent", vbNormalFocus which worked great and performed the silent mode it was meant to. However, if I try: RunCmd "c:\test.txt", vbNormalFocus it doesnt work. I'm guessing that I have to use a different way for that right? The way I have found that seems to work is as follows: Declarations Const SW_SHOWNORM = 1 Const SW_SHOWMIN = 2 ' Edited this bit - seems to work Const SW_SHOWMAX = 3 ' although its abit pointless really hehe Private Declare Function ShellExecute Lib "shell32.dll" _ Alias "ShellExecuteA" (ByVal hWnd As Long, _ ByVal lpOperation As String, ByVal lpFile As String, _ ByVal lpParameters As String, _ ByVal lpDirectory As String, _ ByVal nShowCmd As Long) As Long cmdOpen_examplehtml Private Sub cmdOpen_examplehtml_Click() Dim handle As Long handle = ShellExecute(0, "Open", "c:\test.html", 0, 0, SW_SHOWNORM) End Sub but I have to put that in each form I want to use it. Is there a module alternative - not that its a problem - good old cut and paste aint hard lol However, it does seem to open files that are registered in windows in their associated program which is what I'm after too. So am i right that using both of these two method will allow me to open whatever I want - be it a app with switches, or a cmd/bat/html/jpg/txt/etc. file? Or have I missed something? (please remember I'm basically a noob at VB at the moment - seems so much different 9 years ago - but that probably because it is.... well.... never did anything like this then lol Thanks so much for the help so far. Any other suggestions are welcome - including if you know whether jdoe's thought about putting MSVBVM60.DLL in the same directory as your APP.EXE, then please post a quick reply here for me/us. Many thanks, Nathan H.

I'll give it a go when I get home tonight - hope its as simple as that I've tried something similar but i think maybe that was aimed at VB.NET code (someone pm me whether its worth getting VB.net - ie VB.NET VS VB6 thing) I've used some very far fetched thing that works for me at the moment. I cant reel it off right now obviously, but it lauches txt and cmd/bat files EXCEPT that (on the exe I tried) it wouldnt load it and I couldnt put parameters/switches after the app name either. Odd Regards, Nath

Hi all Before I fully ask the question I've got, I'll explain what I'm attempting to achive so you can see what I'm planing... Basically, a CD menu system that runs off the cd [autorun's] (yes, I know there loads of those type of programs out there, I just want to design my own - a little exe app which can be run from cd ) What I'm planing for in this app is to have different categories - etc. but the bulk of it will be command buttons which will... either launch a installation program, run a program direct from cd or run something from the system its being used on i.e. defrag So, thats the plan so here's the question... How can I launch a program, cmd, txt, html, bmp, etc. using VB6? Also, how can I launch it (a program or cmd) with paramaters/switches also? i.e. setup /s /noreboot /example I know there has been posts that cover "some" aspects like this but I didnt find anything that gave me the right answers. I can find my way around VB in a fairly basic way - but have only just picked up learning it and cant do the "hard stuff" yet so if there is a simple solution to this, please tell me. And as a side question, I'm wondering how I'd build the final exe which would run on Win 98 and above? Would the VB Runtime files need to be installed in order to load up the program or is there a way around that? Many thanks for your time, Nath.

@SilverBulletUK and oftentired Afraid not - had a look at both suggestions and put them back to the default settings as best as possible. No indication of any sort of change unfortunately... some sort of gui problem as previously (not with this machine) i've seen outlook look like how norton looks and Internet explorer displaying pages incorrectly (in the same sort of way as how norton looks). Any other ideas? I know that some cleaner was run on it and it cleared a load of files it shouldnt have - which caused the initial problem :@ People fiddle "too much" i think lol Regards, Nath.

Hi all Bit of a confusing one this and as time is short, I'll have to be brief... Been looking at a computer with Windows XP SP2 on it which someone had been messing (i think) with the unicode settings in the Regional Settings. As it was on the US settings anyway, I changed it to UK, restarted and the Start Menu and all other displayed fonts appeared correctly (this was the initial problem in the first place). However, in the process of fixing it, I discovered that some programs ...er... "didnt look right" (displayed incorrectly) as for example, if I load Norton Antivirus up, it looks all over the place - see the attachment. I've seen other programs display incorrectly in the past, including websites displayed incorrectly in the same way, but have never found a solution. Anyone have an idea except formatting and starting again? Have tried all sorts of repair techniques in the past and its beaten me every time :@ Even the reinstalling windows using the repair option doesnt help either. Hope someone can help. Best regards & Season greetings, Nathan H.
