If you did both at the same time, then it could be either that solved it for you but as its solved - no worries lol N. -

Windows XP with SP2 Slipstreamed
tarquel replied to Grake's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
When you say you bought a new computer, are you refering to buying one from a shop or something, that comes with xp preinstalled? If so, was XP sp2 running on it when you got it? If so, then you may have missed out the following hotfix: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en As Nois3 says, a BIOS flash to the latest version may be on the cards too, but like I said, if sp2 was already on it when you got it (i'd have thought by now, all pc's should come with sp2 on them) then its probably this hofix you may have missed out. Regards and let us know how you get on. Nath -
IMO, Providing you are not: a) circumventing licensing, WPA or other methods of a similar aspect by modifying files/resources B) AND you DO NOT DISTRIBUTE IT - then I dont *think* that Microsoft would have a problem with it. If you provide information regarding ways of doing this to other people - with intent to circumvent the aspects mentioned above in point a) - then thats as good as doing the same thing as distributing the material itself. So, in short, at the very least, its "legal, for personal use" but if not, then definately illegal and MS will come down on you heavy I would say. N.

Indeed Ryan.. Nice to know it aint possible (yet) to skip the [start] part of MU. I've found MU really handy but I agree, its replacing of WU needs a bit more tweaking by MS I think :zd :thumbsup Cheers N.

Integrating Windows Update V6
tarquel replied to FrankE9999's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Nice one magic_p Sounds alot better than what I wrote lol Anymore on MU intergration should be mentioned in the topic I started in the following thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...ndpost&p=348982 Lets not mention it further on this thread so we dont annoy the people (and moderators/admins) looking for what this topic is about - WU6 intergration Cheers, N -

how to find ou wich hotfixes are installed?
tarquel replied to quotee's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
You can you the command line version of the mbsa package to run a scan of the system (2000 and above ) and produce a log file which you can look at and it lists them. I used it alot befoe SP2 came out (as you imagine). I'm trying to now get it to install the hotfixes it finds which are missing or not the latest version - tho i havent tried to do this for while. I havent (yet) tried the new 2.0 final version, so I'm unsure to whether it still works or not. I'll try and get on this asap - send me a pm to remind me if u dont hear anything from me Cheers Nath -
@Anderz: You probably know this by now but you have to use the setup.exe from the Mozilla setup @Steve1012: Welcome to MSFN... ahem... U tried (with winrar installed) right-clicking on the downloaded setup file and extracting it using WinRAR? Also, you said the Firefox setup, NOT the mozilla setup btw. Regards, N.

Maybe so (although I havent seen what you are refering to personally and I have all sorts of different Office installs & versions installed) but that is only a problem with the detection definitions that I presume it downloads when it/you visit MU. The framework of MU is out of beta - i know as i was beta testing it lol - and MS will switch WU to using MU soon, so its worth looking at now as it IS finished and it works fine Please keep on topic though as "how well MU works or not" isn't the issue here thanks Cheers Nath

Hi all [ NOTE: Following on from *this* topic, I thought we'd better start a new thread to discuss it ] As some people are unaware of this it seems, I thought I'd start this thread. Had anyone found a way of installing this so that it is already included in install XP? i.e. when visiting http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate you dont get [start], and after it downloads, the requester asking to install it. If possible, I'm after two ways to do it: 1. Intergration into the i386 install or similar method 2. Wrapping it up to make it a silent install i.e. to carry around in a toolkit, on a CD, etc. for clients who only have a dialup modem and to help reduce the ammount they have to download, etc - in other words, a switchless exe I assume that it requires WU6 & Windows Installer 3.1 to be installed too, tho I cant be sure on this (need to look it up methinks) - any thoughts here would be welcome too I can/will update this first post so people dont have to rumage thru the thread to find what they want Regards, Nath.

Integrating Windows Update V6
tarquel replied to FrankE9999's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I was only asking it because it had already been mentioned in this thread (despite the topic title). I wasn't meanin to digress further. Your choice whether u look at it or not but like I said, MS will be diverting everyone to it soon so it makes no difference... lol we'll still have to add it to our cd's lol ;) I'll not mention it again on this thread Thanks for the replies tho Cheers, N. -
Integrating Windows Update V6
tarquel replied to FrankE9999's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate v6 is just a newer form of WU but it isn't MU as v6 came out a while back whereas Microsoft Update fairly recently finished beta and the current v6 of WU has been given a grace period before you will be redirected to MU instead. May as well be ahead of it I would guess - at least, I do Cheers, N. -
Integrating Windows Update V6
tarquel replied to FrankE9999's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Ok... I'm with you on the WU6 bit - I've already got that bit "presumably" working in my package, but what about the Microsoft Update part? How can we get that to work from the same package/file? (I haven't used the .7zip method but it does the same thing most likely) Cheers N. -
Integrating Windows Update V6
tarquel replied to FrankE9999's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Agreed VAD but v6 isn't the new Microsoft Update is it? I would like to know (as I'm sure a few others would) what would be the best steps for a way of installing the following for both unattended CD and manual installation i.e. after windows has been installed (yes, I have my reasons ) - WU 6 - Microsoft Update Both with no questions, prompts or anything else. Is there a way of doing it that *doesnt* involve intergrating it into a CD install? If someone can point out a manual process for this (its late here ok - my brain has switched off tonight lol) then I'll repack it for us all and stick it with my other packages [see sig] Hope this makes sense I havent tried the thing I've made on a SP2 install yet - mainly as both my machines here already have WU6 & MU in them [is there a way of removing them so I can test my package?] - but I'll stick what I made so far on my apps site and if someone wants to get back to me as to whether it works or not on a non-WU6/MU install of SP2, then that would be very handy Cheers all, Nath -
just a small point ...*ahem*... but make sure you dont remove services that you dont know what they are... ...you may (and most likely will) run into problems with other things and wonder why - as I've seen a fair few times before on MSFN. Cheers and happy gaming N.

Sun Java VM 1.5.0_02 silent install from RunOnceEx
tarquel replied to mctt's topic in Application Installs
slightly off topic but whats the main diff between ver 1.5.0_02 & ver 5? Why do they continue with both? Cheers, N. -
Check you IE options/settings i.e. make sure no proxy or anything has been entered without your knowledge, etc. Check your hosts file and make sure it only contains valid info in it. Make sure you havent got a virus on your machine and check for spyware/hijacker problems... new MS Antispyware Beta out You could try a alternative browser like Firefox to see if you can use it to browse the internet - to see if it IS IE or not. Hope it helps, Regards, N.

What? Please explain what you are talking about and what it is you want us to comment/vote on. Support regarding XP is from Microsoft, not Acer surely...lol Regards, N.

I play FF XI and although I havent played WoW, in a comparison basis (would be nice if someone who has really got into both could make one for everyone) I cannot make, but from what I hear, WoW is just too easy to play and you advance so quicky compared to FF-XI. If what JasonGW says is true, then FF-XI rules as the quests are largely more complex that how he describes WoW's quests. I find that FF-XI is best played non-continually (which I guess could be said of most games like this) so that the momentum doesn't wear off. I previously played Eve Online before FF XI came out in UK/Europe, and I just couldn't get into it properly as there was sooo much info to take in straight away - race info, news, etc. Dont get me wrong, I like space-games i.e. Elite II, and the more recent MS Freelancer, but this was too deep for me. I think the companies should remember that some ppl can't afford to pay for multiple online game subscriptions each month and that if they dropped the prices a little, ppl might be prepared to go for more than one game. Guild Wars is real nice - a proper online NWN of sorts and no subscription each month. That means theres alot less to lose as you dont have to pay each month for a while to see if you like it. And it can be bought quite cheaply online so its worth a try. So for me, FF XI (and Guid Wars when I get it - I had played a beta weekend) is what I'm gonna stick with for now My two cents... Cheers, Nath

No problemo - glad it works ok for you Nath.

I've made a silent installer for you Check out my apps page (see my sig for user/pass info). Remember that this is only the lite version and you need to install it AFTER you have dotnet framework 1.1 installed. Try it manually on your xp machine (remove any version of it thats installed first tho). Let me know how it goes Regards, N.

Cheers and no problem Dont let it put you off using it tho - once you get the hang of it, its dead easy to use Regards and welcome to MSFN btw , N.
