Make sure that you have the latest drivers for your graphics card, sound card and motherboard (although sometimes downgrading graphics drivers might also help). Make sure all unnecessary background tasks have been closed. Try setting the hardware acceleration for your sound card to Basic acceleration. Try downloading DirectX from the Microsoft site and reinstalling it.

I've never used WMP since i reinstalled my whole system about 9mths ago. I swayed towards Winamp and have stayed with it ever since. I personally would like to see it removed altogether.
