  1. It would be helpful to explain exactly how to do that. Sure. Use the command "setup /p i", without the quotation marks, of course. BTW, for those wishing to remove ACPI and APM on an already installed Win 98, there's how-to info here.
  2. That's for the moment... I doubt MS would be so utterly incompetent as to push so many pieces of intinsicaly unfunctional software...
  3. Thanks! Fixed! Sorry, it had eluded me... It's not clear whether it's benign or not... but, at least in the case of 7SP1, it changes files galore, including SMSS.EXE and NTOSKRNL.EXE, so it does seem pretty intrusive, really!
  4. The 1st post has been updated!
  5. Happy birthday, PC_LOAD_LETTER!
  6. That would be because you're running produkey on Windows 10, right? It detects the version of Windows it's running on, just that. It cannot detect 7 because seven isn't running at that point. So, don't be confused... it's all right: The license produkey gets from windows.old/windows/system32/config/software is the one for 7, all right!
  7. Well, I, for one, drew the line at 7 (theoretically, that is, because I'll only move on truly to 7 when, and if, IMO, XP SP3 becomes inviable, and not one second earlier). I do have two 7 (ultimate) installations, one x64 on a multiboot desktop, which I keep up to date but never use for anything, and another, x86, on a netbook rarely used. All my other machines have XP Pro SP3. Although I sometimes use 8 or even Vista SP2 at work, neither ever crossed the houses doorway till now. The only difference between my point-of-view and yours is that you actually found 8.1 valuable, while I do not. This is a statement of my view on the matter. I do believe most people here knew that already. But I've decided to state it again in so many words, just in case. Of course, my opinion is my own, not necessarily MSFN's.
  8. Abbandonware... lots wishful thinking and so many words... and yet it does not even exist, from the point-of-view of law. Either one has valid licences or it's just warez, no matter how much one may wish to sugar-coat it.
  9. Read the thread for which jumper gave a hyperlink in the post just above yours, and you'll know the answer for safe mode.
  10. Not so. You could as well make the effort to get 98SE running in a VM, at £0 = 0€, and open a viable way to run not just that Dictionary, but many other old applications you already own, too.
  11. @PC: Good to see you around! Now, if I may guess, her machine has 98SE with the latest uSP and no KernelEx at all, right?
  12. Well, jaclaz offered you a very minimalist 3.1 in a DOSBox, which however might entail some measure tweaking and trials. I've pointed you to a text tutorial and an alternative video tutorial for 9x on DOSBox... while it's more massive than 3.1, it's a ready-made recipe... and may be more general use, if you ever decide to run another olf application, besides the dictionary. With all due respect, if even a video tutorial is too difficult, please do kindly tell me: what do you want instead?
  13. Guide: installing Win 95 on DOSBox
  14. I run XP on FAT32: so, everyone can access any and everything. And, of course, cacls don't apply. Sorry! @w2k4eva: OTOH, it seems to reinforce your hypothesis, doesn't it?
  15. Answers for the OP: Yes.No.Just for visiting either MS Update or the MS Update Catalog. Else using Firefox 38.0.1.
  16. What error exactly do you get? Copy the message or take a pic, please. If you're using just 1 GiB you shouldn't need MaxPhysPage=40000 (it goes under [386Enh], of course), but it can do no harm either.
  17. Did you add the section below to system.ini? If not, do it, and then try again so we find out whether it can boot now, OK? [vcache]MaxFileCache=393216 In any case do post back so that we'll know what happened, please.
  18. You sure can put it that way: Vista RTM was awful, but Vista SP2 is probably just as good as 7 SP1, only lighter and faster.. Of course, a lot of people may disagree with me about this, but, then again, I'm already used to it, by now.
  19. Here, maybe?
  20. How many MS accounts "John Doe", born on 1/1/1970, do exist? Or, if they don't, what prevents one from creating them?
  21. Because it just rocks?
  22. Well, Italian has the added problem that words ending in o/a have plurals in i/e, while in Portuguese and Spanish they do it in os/as. Anyway, here in Brazil its getting popular the use of "@" as a way to avoid a surge of new laws, just as you envisaged for Italy... So... A really creative MS Italian translator (is that such a creature? I really doubt any creative creatures still work for MS at this point in time...) could come out with: "Il tuo account, bell@," ... ... As for expressing respect in English, I'd strongly suggest "Your Lightbursting Person" as a very politically correct translation of "clarissimus vir".
  23. Then again, it might have been "Il tuo account, bello,"... "Y'all", maybe? Then again, there's nothing like "Ud." (= "Lei", in Italian or "o senhor / a senhora" in Portuguese).
  24. You mean that there's no risk in running true DOS from a drive in AHCI mode as long as one runs in Real Mode only? That's good news, indeed! OTOH, on going to Virtual Mode, the bug, if present, should trash DOS at once, and may result in damages to the FAT FS on any connected drive, right?
  25. Can you provide an application (runnable in true DOS) to identify that bug? There's a lot of users nowadays running in Compatability Mode.
