Schrödinger's cat asks "why?"...

1st it's said one should upgrade out of XP SP3, because MS doesn't offer updates anymore... and now MS gives peolple 10, which is only runnable , if at all, by disabling updates for good? Go figure!

Welcome to MSFN! Make sure to visit the "What are you listening to" thread... I'm sure you'll find some pearls there, so to say!

Lines not wrapped in Editor - need to scroll horizontally
dencorso replied to tomasz86's topic in Site & Forum Issues
With FF 40.0.3 on XP SP3 the words do not wrap for me either. AFAICS, it seems to be a problem of the more recent FF builds with IP.B, because PM 25.7.0 is a fork of FF 24.8.0 esr... -
Do some websites out-right block connections from IE6 browser?
dencorso replied to Nomen's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Sure! Thanks for the heads up! The correct entries for lines 7 and 8 should be: [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform] That is: the "Post Platform" shouldn't be present in line 7, only in line 8. -
x64 Edition Updates Until 2015?
dencorso replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows XP 64 Bit Edition
I agree. 4.4.304.0 x86 works OK on XPSP3 and uses the current definitions without giving the red icon of "support end". But keep in mind to never update MSE to any version higher than 4.4.304.0 or the red icon and the end support messages will appear. -
Skrell's RVMi thread hijack has been split into its own thread. Please do keep on-topic.

My current thoughts about it are as follows: 2k to Vista remain safe to use indefinitely, and it may be feasible to port 7 drivers to Vista, when necessary. 8.0 is crap. 7 and 8.1 can be mantained indefinitely with good backups and perpetual vigilance. 10? Who wants that crap? And that's what I meant with "resistance is futile", some posts back: trying to resist may be possible but, AFAICS, not at 10 level. IMO, if you are on 10, you've been already assimilated. My 2¢ only, of course.

Yes, you're on the right forum. But you should have read the Rules... Banned on #1a: no warez. BTW, Win 98SE supports 1152 MiB of RAM and will use it with no patching at all, just a small edit to system.ini (and system.cb, in case one wants to run also in Safe Mode).

Internet explorer 9 on windows xp with resource hacker
dencorso replied to Jakob99's topic in Windows XP
IE9 cannot be installed on XP. But it can be spoofed. Just merge this reg in addition to a clean IE8 install, anf there you are: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent][-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent][-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent][HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent]@=""[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent]@=""[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent]@=""[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent]@="""Version"="MSIE 9.0"- 6 replies

That can be helped: create a batch file that checks that, say, once per hour, and puts a bright red icon in the notification area (tray), in case it actually finds that. In what regards actually providing the icon in tray, this should do nicely.

Looks to me like Win 10 will top out at about 10% adoption
dencorso replied to NoelC's topic in Windows 10
Besides DEC's many achievements, it's also forever linked to unix and the C programming language.because the original AT&T Unix was developped, in 1969, on a PDP-7 (and later on a PDP-11/20) at the Bell Labs research center by Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and others (being named UNICS by Peter Neumann, in 1970... and a little later, that became Unix). Moreover, the development of C started in 1972 on the selfsame PDP-11/20, being also led by Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie. Without DEC, the world today would be surely very different! -
Thanks a lot for the comprehensive analysis, Bersaglio. You do rock! So, in short: .NET Framework 4 updates for XP are possible up to January 2016. All other versions are not likely to have any more official updates. And it's not clear whether updates intended for Vista can be converted into unofficial updates for XP, but most likely they are not.

dencorso replied to NoelC's topic in Windows 10
I'm afraid that's exactly right. +1... And, BTW, MS does not need to worry too much about its its established and highly successful business in work/serious computing because most of that user base has just migrated to 7 from XP, and won't upgrade anytime soon (unless, of course, MS keeps pushing 10 on them on purpose... and that would sure be their worst possible mistake). -

I do agree with that! Or, to be precise, I mostly agree with that! Then again, everything eventually goes the way of Hagoromo chalk. Once upon a time, there was DEC. Maybe we're nearing the time we'll be able to say the same about MS... -
+1: Get well soon, WildBill!

+1 I've never been more glad to be wrong: I was predicting about 37% share right in the 1st month! ... And I sure do doubt I was the only one (that's what all MS's pushing 10 pointed to, after all)... -
I understand you're using the MVPs hosts file as the starting point to build uour customized version, right? Would you consider sharing the file to prepend their hosts file so as to replicate your curren one, Noel? I'd like to test it on XP SP3 and on 7 SP1...

dencorso replied to NoelC's topic in Windows 10
I agree that 10 probably won't get more than 10% anytime soon. And the graph below, when compared to the one for June shows that clearly, not just the Vista and XP (and 2k) shares, but also the one for 8.0, form an unassailable fortress 10 cannot penetrate (people who drew a line in the sand) and correspond to about 15%. All of 10's gains must come just from 8.1 and 7SP1, and 10's initial impetus seems already lost. -
Temperamental is certainly a good description. Now we know 512MB video cards can work under 9x. But apparently it depends critically on the hardware, so they are far from being a sure bet.

It's got a sister: KB3083324 - Windows Update Client for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: September 2015 *#&%$@!!!!, indeed! BTW, the 1st post has been updated, of course.
