  1. Then again, even if he strongly disapproves of the direction the company has been taking, if he admitted it publicly, he'd be helping it fail... No. Being away and having his strong reputation, the only thing he ought to say is that he approves of the direction the company has been taking... in fact he has no choice, but to declare that. Even if he refused commenting on it, it would amount to a negative evaluation he just cannot afford to broadcast.
  2. One thing's for certain, and that is that by bringing Gates back they can hardly do any worse than they currently are. Sure! And he might even find a way to steer things back in line, while most of the customers haven't yet gone away for good...
  3. What about: "there's no such thing as a free lunch!" ?
  4. Else they might realize it's time to oust Nadella, then ask Bill Gates back. A similar move saved Apple, in the past. It might even work!
  5. zip, rar or 7z it with a password, and MediaFire'll stop meddling. If I may suggest a general password for such cases, "False8positivE" is a good one. BTW, how many false positives does it get from Virus Total?
  6. Yes. Precisely. That thread is in a registered member only section of RyanVM. Sorry, 5eraph, but you're mistaken about it. One actually needs to be a member of RyanVM's to download those files.
  7. PM 5eraph, he can help you with your registration, too. I'm sorry but direct download links to repacked unredistributables are not allowed on MSFN.
  8. Did you run it elevated? Of course you already tried the solutions proposed in this page, right? Did you run sfc /scannow? If not, do it, please. If already, then download and run SFCFix, reboot, and try sfc /scannow once again. Another idea: look for %WINDIR%\winSxS\pending.xml and, if found, delete it.
  9. To me, for one, it sure has! And, furthermore, I'm glad your issue is solved!
  10. Two interesting observations: the number of faithful Vista and Linux diehards continues to keep between 1.5 and 2% (of course, the Vista users have no reason nor incentive to change OS, but I'd imagine the Linux users would be rising, thanks to 10, but that doesen't seem to be happening... at least, not yet). And the users of all Mac OS X varieties add up to about 8%, and that also does not seem to be growing... I'd say most of the people who hated 10 went back to either 8.1, 7 or XP, but mostly back to that one they were using before "upgrade"...
  11. Download the latest either WindowsUpdateAgent (x86) or WindowsUpdateAgent (x64) and run it, using the /wuforce switch. Reboot. Try again and WU/MU should just work, although you may have to accept the newest WU/MU active-X, if it gets offered to you. HTH
  12. Well, the updates are for the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack actually... if it's installed, one's gets offered them. For more about it, you may want to read my thread about installing it on Office 97, which is unsupporte by MS but just works, all right!
  13. As I've remarked before, it's not a question of "when" or "whether": Win 10 has already flopped! Not even given gratis (= free as in free beer), it was attractive enough even to cause those on 8.x to migrate to it.
  14. Yes, I remain using Office 2000. Yes. I keep installing both the Office 2007 updates, and the POSReady 2009 updates, as well as .NET and Silverlight updates when available... I see no reason to avoid any ot them. In case anything strikes me as doubtful, rest assured I shall post about it, when and if it ever happens.
  15. Thanks, epic! I've added it to the 1st post, which I've just revised today.
  16. Well, IIRR, one of the "best" motives MS used to give to coerce people into "upgrading" from XP was that there wouldn't be updates for it anymore... now, considering the best option is to deny all updates to avoid one's 7SP1 morphing into 10, please do tell me what's the difference from keeping on XP until it becomes utterly untenable?
  17. HIMEM.SYS or its clones do modify the system in ways that are difficult to revert completely upon forcible removal. Moreover, this should just work, try it and you'll see it's not so painful at all: [menu]menuitem=NH, No HIMEMmenuitem=GU, General Usemenudefault=GU,5menucolor=7,0[GR]DOS=HIGHDEVICE=HIMEM.SYS /VDEVICE=IFSHLP.SYS[NH][COMMON]SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\ /P /E:512
  18. No. Unloading HIMEM is problematic and unreliable. The best option is to create two menu entries, like this: [menu]menuitem=NH, No HIMEMmenuitem=GU, General Usemenudefault=GU,5menucolor=7,0[GR]DOS=HIGHDEVICE=HIMEM.SYS /VDEVICE=IFSHLP.SYS[NH][COMMON]<other commands...>See also this, this and this.
  19. See this...
  20. In reality, it's just a typo: it should be "skynet", not "spynet"... however, since it didn't emerge spontaneously, but instead was created by NuMS, it's in fact superdumb, and unable to spell correctly!
  21. No. One should use either blackwingcat's single update, or 5eraph's unofficial rootsupd and rvkroots (so, two files, as the now no more updated official MS files), or else heinoganda's updater. Isn't it wonderful to have three alternatives?
  22. Security?
  23. There's no reason for that. heinoganda's tutorial already gives links for the certificates.
  24. BTW, where has CharlotteTheHarlot disappeared to?
