If I remember the method is WindowsUpdate.log parsing during a full Windows Update website update. So this is the same list you see in Windows Update after a genuine windows xp sp2 install + wmp11 and ie7 installed.
Windows XP can be installed on any partition logical or not (for example in E:\ ) but bootsector/bootfiles will be installed in the primary active partition (generally C:).
