  1. but explorer.exe is not only responsable of windows responsiveness. Look for win2k + patchs/hack to allow the features you want in XP to keep responsiveness of Win2k ...
  2. Wga doesn't run in background once (or "when", excuse for my language) windows is genuine'd
  3. I havn't read all the topic, but fabfisc you can make a "pause" with ping command like ping 127.0.0.1 You can add more ping to "pause" more ... It's not really beautiful, but works great for many batchs of mine ... ++
  4. Even if it's possible (while breaking few features of XP), tweaking will best choice than replacing the shell, IMHO Few regs Disabling themes & effects Disabling un-used services Cleaning programs at start
  5. Same solution as Jeremy but with an automatic .reg file REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] "UpperFilters"=- "LowerFilters"=- [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]
  6. The key on your license must works, it's weird ... But the key embedded on recovery cd/partition or system installed by default will not work with regular cd, you will need a HP cd. The alternative is to re-make a HP cd with full regular cd and use OEMbios files from http://www.oembios.net/.
  7. you can pick-up the media of your neighbour ^^ and backup its media, it's tolered imho.
  8. I don't know if it's your case but, Windows XP Pro media can be bought without license-key, it's just the media to use with key for enterprises (volume license key). The media is about 10€ if I remember, but if you buy that CD you can't do anything without a license key.
  9. The method is explained at http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=93152 For those want to make its installer in his native language. (sorry for my language ^^)

    Keep DRM data?

Oups, too fast reading your post ... sorry ... I don't know for WMP11
  11. Thanks the_guy for your work! Edited (in fact all is okay on real machine) Anyone has noticed Internet Explorer 7 updates aren't displayed in Automatic Updates tool (in yellow shield) ? I have installed all updates except IE7 and Automatic Updates tool says nothing, but on WindwsUpdate.com there are the 2 ie7 updates avaible.
  12. I havn't an expert audio ear but all my music collection is in 96kbps wma format and the quality is enough for me. I burn some wma files and read in my Alpine 9815RB and the quality is enough too, no people in my car say to me "I think you have wma in your cd .." yet ! But I'm agree in the fact that wma is dragstic (on the paper) to encode sound, but for me it isn't enough ^^

    Keep DRM data?

In WMP, there is an option to backup your license to My Documents. On the new system, re-use the utility to retsore license and plya your drm files.
  14. For me, it isn't possible to work on a same excel files on two computers over network. I think the best it to use Remote Desktop feature, but you can't really work together at the same time, but the document is directly edited, modified, viewed ... I hope you undersstand what I mean. Goodbye.
  15. Win + D , force show desktop (better than win + M ) Win + F , search files Win + L , lock session
  16. If I remember vista on CD needs 4 cdroms, which is contain all vista version by the way, this is the case for my msdn version.
  17. The .key file mechanism hasn't modified, the installer get .key if it's in same folder without problems, same as before ...
  18. For the moment, installed more than twice on Vista Home Premium without problem, and the same for Windows XP Home too. I use genuine installer with /qb switch and a .key license embedded in one self extracting .exe. The setup install fine, no reboot at the end of install. After reboot, all is okay except virus defs must to be updated, because too old. It's exactly what I want edit: Windows & KAV French versions.
  19. This isn't real wrong place. It's okay for windows xp forum. For your question, I 'm pretty sure you can't directly change Win+E action, it's "hard-coded" in windows. But with third-party program you can customize win+... shortcuts.
  20. I have updated my post-install package of kav to kav 6.0.2.614fr and it seems to work without workaround about modify .msi and no need to regtweak to not reboot for the first avp.exe execution, I'm happy I use sfx pack from WPI, I will test the new version during this week to confirm.
  21. Just re-tested I obtain this regfile REGEDIT4 [...\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell\Add to My App] "command"="C:\DOCUME~1\Sonic\LOCALS~1\Temp\Myapp.exe" Sure you must adapt the script to your goal.
  22. You can try to delete INFACHE.1 file too from c:\windows\inf
  23. You can delete DOTNETFX too. It isn't used during install. It's .NET FrameWork setup for post-install.
