  1. I did not tell you to use the official Pale Moon build. I suggested downloading the portable and THEN COPYING THE BUILD THAT YOU DO USE INTO THE BIN FOLDER. We only want to use the "portable loader", NOT the "official Pale Moon build". ps - not for the faint of heart, but I wouldn't run antivirus software if you PAID ME TO. Never been hit with a virus (and would put money on it that I never will be). Click-Savvy. Know what you are clicking, use a good HOSTS file, use NoScript and only allow white-listed .js, use a good uMatrix list, et cetera. But again, I wouldn't run antivirus software if you PAID ME TO. But "to each their own", I know that "most" people don't like BLOCKING ALL javascript by default. But it's either nag-screens about .js or nag-screens from the antivirus software, "pick your poison". But anywhoo...

  2. A counterargument to that is there are many poorer countries like China and India where the people simply can't afford newer boxes. They're going to use what they got regardless and so it does everyone a great service to at least provide them with a working browser with some security protections. Now I get that browser developers can't do this forever but Goggle has the money, although they do what they feel like because they have the power. This is where Roytam and others deserve a good deal of credit for keeping the older versions of Firefox patched and up to date as best they can since for these users it's better than nothing. And the side benefit is that the rest of us get to keep using them as well.

  3. One of the many reasons why having a chrome based browser monopoly is bad. Feels like we are back in the bad old ie6 days.

  5. 7-zip says it's not a valid archive. Interestingly, I get a different file if I set the Wayback machine to 2000 vs 2008, however, both versions just crash with an invalid instruction when run. I'll just set up a Windows 98 FE VM. It's simpler than tracking down some 20 year old files on the internet.

  6. No, those builds are only needed by computers that don’t even support SSE2, which is only a fraction of the remaining Windows XP diehards. I think browsers that support SSE2 will be around for a long time - they just won’t be based on the latest Chromium.

  8. Kaspersky Internet Security labels the MSFN notification e-mail with that link as SPAM, trying to open said link in latest Serpent, it is blocked by KIS cloud protection (as being a Phishing site) : Probably a false positive, but...

  9. @Xack, I don't agree. SSE3 requirement means that computers older than year 2005 will not get Google Chrome update. People should stop using such old PCs. Sometimes, when I see people complaining about software or hardware support limitation or full discontinuation, it makes me think that some people still use windows 2000 or earlier. Please do not.

  10. With Mozilla bleeding firefox users can’t seem them doing it. They probably will eventually, just not right away. But then you never know, going from the old legacy system to quantum cost them millions of users and it didn’t seem to phase them. So I do hope they wait until at least after the next esr version to keep the newer FF useable on the old Win7 boxes until it’s dropped completely.

  11. That is probably auto-updated via a bit of javascript so I wouldn't read too much into it. From my point of view it had a good run and i got value for money for the small amount it cost. I have moved to Curtains now which in many ways is better. I have done the bare minimujm with it at present, messed around with a couple of different transparent title bar styles (one with a gradient and the attached one with an attempt at replicating the acrylic look as I described above) and made my explorer semi-transparent when not in focus but it offers far more in terms of personalisation.

  12. UXP core is 29-ish (without using NSS SQLite (i.e. keeping NSS using DBM for better over-network-drive performance), preserving marquee, keeping old user agent override key name, etc.) PM front-end is kind-of 29-ish, but due to above changes, it is more 28-alike. (like keeping old omni.ja format)

  13. I finally got my driver to work in 256 color mode! However, it locks up the system when changing resolution or color depth. I'm also having issues with SoftICE not handling resolution changes correctly. Whenever my driver changes the screen resolution, SoftICE's output becomes garbled and unreadable.

  14. I recently built a new pc based on intel's z490 platform with an i7-10700k, and wanted to see how well 2k would work on it. This is the result. Functional: AHCI USB3 Non-Functional LAN Audio (didn't test much so it might work) ACPI Hyperthreading

  15. Exactly! There are many wise folks on this wonderful forum who still use Windows 2000 or even Windows 95 today, by applying the necessary compatibility, security and usability patches and taking smart preventive measures against bad actors! So, whatever your OS may be, being smart is VERY IMPORTANT! Windows 10 is just useless and bloated and unstable, and even with "security" updates, it is not made as secure as older Windows versions, such as 9x-Vista, which very less number of people use today and which are highly unlikely to be targeted by bad actors. I did not mention 7-8.1 as they are still used by about 15-20% of the Windows population, but over time, usage will decline (partly because of Microsoft's intimidation) and they will also become more secure.
