... However, the image uploaded by him isn't from an XP system: (bcryptprimitives.dll first appeared in NT 6.1), so why does ASLR not work in his case?2 points

AVX instructions would be of some benefit on CPU-intensive applications like AI, but probably not much on a typical Web browser, and certainly not on an email client. PM might be an exception because its old FF 52 Javascript engine takes a lot more CPU than the corresponding engines in more modern browsers. Back in 2017, the JS engine could afford to be inefficient, but Web sites are much more bloated with JS in 2024. But if MCP is merely using AVX as a proxy for "faster CPU," then it seems silly to me. Instead of AVX, the PM installer could just run a simple loop to test CPU speed, and pop up a warning if the CPU is found to be "too slow." It'd be interesting to run some side-by-side tests of AVX and SSE2 Pale Moon builds on the same PC (with an AVX processor), so we could see how much improvement actually comes from AVX vs. the improvement just from a faster CPU. I suspect it's mostly the latter, but either way, it seems to me there would be a much greater ROI from backporting a more modern JS engine to UXP than from just building PM with AVX instructions to try to brute-force their way out of an old, slow JS engine. (Their stubborn insistence on a single process doesn't help either. Most modern CPUs have at least eight cores, but PM will basically use only one of them.)2 points

Thanks, actually H265 acceleration with Cuvid suppossed to work in conjunction with DXVA on older OS, did you try the "hybrid" mode?2 points
-
Not clear, is this using only the native DXVA? Or Cuvid only? Or DXVA mixed with CUVID? No screenshots, either.2 points

Regarding sound, only DD5.1, but nor DDP5.1 is available. DTS on XP is limited to the core component (just the simple, compressed DTS at the max. bitrate of 1509), DTS_HD MA and un-compressed DTS_HD lossless are not available.2 points

D3D11 video acceleration and DXVA/DXVA2 video acceleration are independent techniques, please don't bring confusion, In XP, only DXVA is available, which is of course not suited for anything higher than MPEG, MPEG2, H264 and VC-1.2 points

D3D11 video acceleration (don't confuse with gaming D3D11) is only available in Win8.2 points

Bingo! Normally, it shouldn't exist. Both browsers should go back to normal if you delete the value and restart Windows. Otherwise, you're forcing ASLR off and having old relocation logic in effect, which duplicates DLLs in memory/page file when multiple processes use them. You'd have to find a different value of base address manually then for chrome.dll to avoid collision with another DLL. Each extension is its own process in Chromium.1 point

One variable is that you have four tabs open (one Chrome Web Store, two Tampermonkey, one Greasy Fork). At work at the moment, will check my memory load and chrome processes upon return home. Second variable that is kind of important - how many extensions are you running? Because yeah, 27 chromes is not normal. Something within your profile is causing that. Oh, and I would still verify if your New Moon / Pale Moon also has a rebase issue (xul.dll).1 point

I've never encountered the need for it, neither in browsers, nor in games, that said, I play games from 2020. MK11, for example. Stunning graphics on Vista,1 point

Oh, just found, even the ancient Duo from the 7 series had it, too. Intel Core2 Duo E7500 https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-intel_core2_duo_e7500-vs-intel_core_2_quad_q67001 point

Most likely, for gaming, or if it's a test site, to test the gaming capabilities. SSE4.1 was already included in quads like Q9550 (Launch Date Q1'08). Seventeen years ago! https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/33924/intel-core2-quad-processor-q9550-12m-cache-2-83-ghz-1333-mhz-fsb/specifications.html Non-groovy/earlier/lower/cheaper/weaker models like Q8xxx had it, too. Who would intentionally buy Pentium, unless it's 1994?1 point

First Generation Core i5 and i7 processors are fast and does not have AVX; Phenom II X4 and X6 are pretty fast too. You can play even Metro: Exodus on them. Not supporting this CPU's is a bad move. I am so grateful to roytam1 for New Moon that spare us from that bs!1 point

No. How important is it nowadays to ensure that all my DLLs have non-conflicting base addresses? ASLR mentioned in the article was introduced in Windows Vista. It is, but manual rebasing is a lottery, address chosen by developer obviously doesn't work for @j7n's system.1 point

But hey, I heard they restored in some forks, so try it. As the last resort. GB Times / October 2, 2024 https://gbtimes.com/how-to-stop-videos-from-automatically-playing-chrome/1 point

The flag to stop playing the videos had been removed a long time ago. It was still working in my kindergarten times, in 201x. https://www.howtogeek.com/340967/how-to-prevent-videos-from-autoplaying-in-chrome/1 point

I only run Supermium from inside a VirtualBox VM and my just-downloaded Supermium R6 is not displaying a rebase issue. Your memory screencap indicates that yours is having a rebase issue. Oh, I have no clue what Opium 93 is and could not find a download link with it being STUPIDLY named after a DRUG! But I digress... Your profile says that you run Server 2008 R2 but I shall detail instructions from XP. First, we should prove that you are indeed having a rebase issue. Download Process Hacker 2.38 (I'm fairly certain that this is the last version that will run in XP). Setup = https://sourceforge.net/projects/processhacker/files/processhacker2/processhacker-2.38-setup.exe/download Portable No-Install (I use this one) = https://sourceforge.net/projects/processhacker/files/processhacker2/processhacker-2.38-bin.zip/download Note from Process Hacker -> Options -> Highlighting that relocated DLLs are highlighted. (I cannot show a screencap, MSFN is throwing an error, don't know why, don't care why.) Right-click on any of the chrome.exe files from within Process Hacker and select Properties. (I cannot show a screencap, MSFN is throwing an error, don't know why, don't care why.) In Process Hacker's Properties dialog, select Modules and see if your chrome.dll (because of its file size) is being HIGHLIGHTED as a RELOCATED DLL (note that mine is NOT highlighted because I do not have a rebase issue). Unsure if you ARE or are NOT, but this will prove one way or the other. You will very likely find some SMALL files that are relocated, those SMALL files do not present a memory-hog issue, it is the LARGE files (such as chrome.dll) that can present memory-hog issues.1 point

Oh WOW! Thanks for your blessings! What should I do without them!?!? I think, many others and I already told you twenty times, create interesting content, there will be no problem to like yours, then. I join @Dixel and @Saxon in their support of your Firefox posts, but those you write on extended kernels topics, not.1 point

Rumours then, just rumours. what about the portable kernel version? And will we be able to use this kernel on Vista, just to run browsers, for example?1 point

How do we know it's him, and not an impostor, I mean, since the original accounts were totally wiped.1 point

Hi, can we get those reports of the alleged viruses, so we could decide ourselves, thank you.1 point

Lol, they asked to scan with AV, not to get a lesson on "legality". You failed to mention portable Kernels, like the Vista Kernel was, for example. And I don't know whether this one is portable, any ideas? And as for installing, I 100% agree with you, I never installed those. Too much risk.1 point

Neither of those will work with XP. Even DX9Ex and DXx10 are missing from XP, not mention 11 and 12. Vulkan drivers DON'T exist for XP. It's more like for Vista. With Vista those work, but I'm not gonna go into details since it would be off-topic.1 point

@j7n also asked when was the brightness start to kick in, take this last normal release, compare to the one from the topic or newer. https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases/tag/1.8.6 In all, the creator goes blind, which I guess is normal for older people. Natural ageing process.1 point

The dawn of the BD era would be MPEG2, not VC-1, and I've seen a lot of BD disks, too. The trend to use AVC started when they were re-releasing the old films over and over again, "remastered" bloated with fake grain, etc. XP era hardware would have a hard time playing those bloated AVC streams at 50mbps,1 point

I'm not an expert, but it seems hypocritical of China to complain about America banning Tiktok, when the Chinese Communist Party bans Google and Meta from being used by Chinese netizens. So from my point of view, as an exhausted, tired, cynical, nearly apathetic American, is I'd rather NOT have Chinese companies running their biased algorithms (in order to destabilize my country) on platforms used by Americans. In fact, I'd rather we just ban EVERYTHING Chinese altogether, including all their spies crossing our borders illegally. The entire reason of existence for the CCP is to control and censor information to make themselves look better and everybody else look worse. So no, I don't think we should allow some Chinese companies FREEDOM to espouse their anti-American and anti-Western views inside our own countries. We aren't allowed to post anti-Chinese new stories and articles inside China, are we? Just because we live in a democracy, doesn't mean our flow of information has to be for sale to the highest bidder, there still has to be some morals and principles related to freedom of speech. And letting some communists, and America-haters run the algorithms that control what stories and news articles are trending, doesn't bode well for the future of a stable, democratic society. These are the same Chinese rulers who tell Hollywood which scenes and dialogue are to be erased from movies before they can be seen in China. These are the same Chinese rulers who teach their school children to hate Japanese people and to hate Americans for existing, and because they have some arrogant, "century of humiliation" grievances in their deluded minds. For example, they erased the statue of Liberty from the most recent Spider-man film. What a bunch of cowards, is all I can say. Why don't we just make movies, software, and hardware for Americans and like-minded democratic allies? In my opinion we should COMPLETELY de-couple from China, and Russia. But that's just my two cents. I'll just put it even more simply and bluntly..... they (Russia and China) hate the Western world, so I dislike them back..... they have no business in our open societies. All they want to do is undermine our cultures and destroy us. So, I'm going to vote with my wallet, and not buy anything Chinese or Russian. I don't support Chinese and Russian fascism.1 point
