  4. Thorium (legacy) v122 and, likewise, Supermium v122 are the last versions not tainted with anything CR2023 related ; starting with Sm-v124, CR2023 "curves", icons, color schemes are already sneaking in ; and Sm-v126 is just full of them, even when all CR2023 flags have been disabled; my OCD suffers when I have explicitly opted for "classic" GUI features (omnibox, trapezoidal tabs, etc.) only to be infuriated by CR2023 elements still present! However, I'm not dissing the (forked) browser author(s) (since Google are to blame, again); at the end of the day, I need a working browser the most, I can teach myself (or not? ) to just ignore (small) GUI annoyances... Chrome is at 132-something, the web engine of Th/Sm-v122 will be deprecated by Google soon-ish ...

  5. Very indebted for this prompt fix ; highly appreciated! I can confirm a "Country" account setting has reappeared inside my profile config: https://msfn.org/board/settings/country/ (you need to be logged-in, of course !) So I gave it some ; FTR, last night (in my timezone, GMT+0200) flags hadn't yet returned to all "known" places, but as I type this everything looks OK (apart from some members having now changed their previous flag , e.g. Karla (Sleutel) has now become a Canadian? ) ... Long live MSFN forums!

  7. This is the part that caught my eye - "More WebUI stuff is reverted to its pre-Chrome 2023 appearance." I have not tested the "Th24/M128" version yet. I have been "stuck" at Chromium v122 out of immense dislike over the changes upstream made with the UI that most forkers just followed the Lead Lemming.

  10. My scientific guess would be: the real reason is, google had removed the old OS UI elements completely, it happened after v.126.

  12. Welcome to MSFN! Did you use the supplied installer for Supermium? That should certainly have generated the necessary shortcut to run it. I started with Supermium, but on XP x86 its RAM use was excessive, and tabs would sometimes crash as the memory was exhausted. Then I tried Thorium, and that seemed to be better with RAM. Unfortunately, Supermium then moved on, and Thorium didn't, which meant that I was missing things that I wanted on Thorium which were there on Supermium, so I went back to Supermium. The memory usage problem hasn't gone away, but I am living with it! It only affects memory hungry sites like Instagram and Facebook.

  13. Hi. I specifically wrote “Chromium” because it works most likely on any browser based on that engine, of course in enough new versions (I haven't checked below v109). It does not work with W7 - for this, too, I have actually already found a solution - widevine files from firefox (4.10.2830.0) with kernel32.dll wrapper.

  20. Starting September the 12th, foreign services will cease operating in Russia due to U.S. Treasury sanctions prohibiting the supply of software and IT services to anyone in Russia. If someone still thinks to supply software to a Russian/ Russian citizen, or consultant with the software usage, etc, be warned. "SOFTWARE AND IT-RELATED SERVICES PROHIBITIONS In coordination with the U.S. Department of Commerce and in line with G7 efforts to disrupt the Russian military-industrial base’s reliance on foreign IT systems, Treasury has taken steps to restrict the Russian military-industrial base’s access to certain software and IT-related services. To implement this policy, Treasury, in consultation with the Department of State, has issued a new determination under Executive Order (E.O.) 14071, which prohibits the supply to any person in the Russian Federation of (1) IT consultancy and design services; and (2) IT support services and cloud-based services for enterprise management software and design and manufacturing software. The determination will take effect on September 12, 2024. " More info at home.treasury.gov. https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy2404

  21. What the US Treasury does is out of our European scope, hence the word "think", meaning we, (INTERNATIONAL members), can't influence the US treasury decision. You too need to accept it as a fact. The reason for this topic is obvious. Oh, and I kinda suspect why you don't vote.

  25. It's very simple, don't start off-topic discussions then. I login to the website, go to "unread posts", and what do I see? Right, one million of your posts about having not enough likes. Please stop, you ruin jaclaz's pleasant experience on the forum, I'm pretty sure it would be boring for him, it's spam.

  27. @XPerceniol, greetings and welcome back! I'm so glad you're with us, I hope you recover and join the discussions to the full extent! Yes, I guess we all saw the rather unpleasant topic where he/they kinda made it sound as if you are dead/departed. As always, I tried to stand by you , but then Tommy intervened and suggested to simply ignore him/they/it/their, that's what I'm currently doing, it seems the stalking have stopped (for now), perhaps you also try that, too? I know it's hard, especially after what they wrote, but better save your strength for the recovery process? Maybe it's not worth to dwell in the past?

  28. In times of Avast Premier, I didn't install Software Updater, either. Those features are always crap. But are you sure that all features from my first screenshot are fully available in Avast Free Antivirus? I assume that for example SecureLine VPN has to be paid and is not really part of Avast Free Antivirus. And I read on Avast's homepage from 2018 (archive.org) a spam and phishing filter is only a feature of AIS or AP. So is there really a Mail Shield in Avast Free Antivirus?
    1 point
  29. Thanks for your reply! Of course, I always try to treat programs I present as fairly as possible. BTW, you must have misunderstood something. I am not looking for a better program. I'm not doing all this for myself, but to give all Windows XP users a structured overview of the remaining protection programs and to preserve data of them. As far as security peograms are concerned, I am well provided for. And there is no doubt that Avast has a perfect detection rate. I have used Avast Premier for ages in my system, and there was a time I was more happy with it. As your “Protection” screenshot shows, those features are locked in Avast Free, although I’m sure you had them with Avast Premier. (Malwarebytes Premium includes Ransomware Protection, but unfortunately that feature is inactive on XP/Vista. ) As I wrote, I used Avast Free Antivirus only a short time. Maybe, I overstated it. So, no Ransomware Shield. Ok! Do you know whether it has the Web Protection feature? Or much better, does it have a Web Shield and a Mail Shield? Can you upload a screenshot with all available shields? I thought that was meant by core Firewall functionality. I know there is no firewall, of course. It's a feature of AIS and AP. I only wrote what I found about the features of Avast Free Antivirus. And all sources stated different facts. Even on the original Avast Free Antivirus homepage from 2018. And you're right, Avast Premier has all these features including the Ransomware Shield. Anyway! I didn't install Avast Free Antivirus and I won't do it, either.

  30. And now a general statement about this thread. I collect and present information about security programs for Windows XP here in the most structured way possible. I also share the knowledge I have acquired as a Windows XP user for 22 years now. I don't have to do all this, I am well supplied here with everything that is necessary to use Windows XP as securely as possible in the future. All I do here is preserving and sharing knowledge and information to help others in using Windows XP safely for as long as possible. Nothing more, nothing less!

  31. @D.Draker Just to clarify it! It was @jaclaz and you who stated the following: What I did was simply checking the results of these tests which @jaclaz and you mentioned here. And unfortunately the results are rather poor. So it seems you trust tests from Virus Bulletin in general otherwise you wouldn't have mentioned it. Therefore, I don't understand your objections at all. You can't put forward arguments and then directly cast doubt on them again. That does not make sense at all. Spoken for me only, there are some testing institutes I try to trust: AV-TEST, Virus Bulletin and AV-Comparatives. And I don't and won't do such tests by myself. People cannot always be of the same opinion. But that is no reason to throw in the towel right away. So, don't leave! Go on! That's the idea of discussions. Thank you again! Yes, the last weeks I am so tired ... I really don't know what's going on here. Greetings, AstroSkipper

  32. Thank you for your kind words! But only very slightly above the minimum. A detection rate of 77.40% is unfortunately quite poor. That's why Vir.IT eXplorer only achieved the lowest grade D. For me, simply too low. IMHO, Vir.IT eXplorer is therefore just an option for Windows XP if there is no better one, but not more. But luckily, there are still better ones available.

  33. Structure of this thread You might get the idea that this thread will also become confusing if it continues to grow, but that is not the case. I created it in such a way that you can quickly get to the most important information by regularly checking the second, third and fourth post. In particular, the list in the second post contains all the links to the programs presented here. So checking there at regular intervals is a very good, primary strategy. Additionally, we have a forum search function to check this topic for relevant information as we always should do, of course. And I totally forgot to mention, you should have read the first post of this thread at least once. That's it! Greetimgs, AstroSkipper

  35. I have a landline phone with a caller ID function , made by Alcatel , bought from a German hardware shop . I was so glad that I god rid of the d@mn Panasonic , because it demanded to change 3x1.5v batteries every 2months !!! And the Alcatel works without them at all , even though it has a much better LCD display ! Also , many simple cell phones with buttons. A ton of old Nokias and Philipses from 2001 to 2007, I'm terribly sorry , I do not even want to remember their models. Old Philips phones have the best long lasting batteries . The only dumbphones I had (or even forced) to buy were just meant to make gifts (parents , girlfriends , etc). Yes , my parents use various smartphones , lol !

  36. I have to disagree , sorry . We had lived here very good , before the fall of the wall , before the Eastern European countries were allowed to join the EU . Before all these "modern" globalist agendas . Before we gave up our own hard currency in 1999-2002 , Dutch guilder , which was like between 2 and 3 US bucks per 1 Guilder and almost 2.3 Euro to 1 ! Dutch Guilder was one of the leading currencies in the world along with the British Pound. We kinda didn't have any inflation at all (!) . We simply could buy more goods with our own money ! I do not have anything against folks from Eastern Europe , but our prices went higher and higher during all these years (post 2000-2001) ! I'm just stating the facts . I'd say it became tougher to pay for everything somewhere in 2003-2004 . It became harder to find a job simply because the companies prefer to hire someone who'll work for cheap (from another country). I do not know your age . Do you remember the eighties and the early '90s ? Anyway , it's hard to compare our countries simply because your country was not free during that years , just like this poor guy's country under communist occupation . And all I see it all is coming back .

  37. You can just test it and see for yourself whether it's working or not . Run cmd.exe and copy/paste these commands. The command to enable TRIM : fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0 The command to test TRIM : fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify Yes, you need to type "behavior" instead of the much more common "behaviour". Also , disable the page file completely (you can even delete the pagefile.sys later) , if you have enough RAM , I'd say with 8-16GB of RAM it's absolutely fine to disable it. https://www.minitool.com/lib/pagefile-sys.html
