  1. Scrolling too far? FB isn't that bad, all things considered. I can imagine the tab's process running out of memory if running 32-bit browser. I mean, all that content must be stored somewhere. Does memory at least get released when navigating away? LOL, consumption on my FB front page is about 205 MB with Firefox 110 here, without scrolling down of course. I got to 2 GB scrolling one random page, then I stopped, should replace 32-bit Firefox with 64-bit at some point. Not that I really need to go that far on any such heavy page, but since I got the hardware... Well, honestly, consumption could be heavily reduced by employing pagination, but why do that when everyone has gigabytes of RAM and can keep people hooked without having to click to navigate to new page.

  2. I just did! Strangely, CPU-Z 2.09 on XP isn't prompting me that there's an update. I don't know if that is significant or not.

  3. CPU-Z 2.10 does not run on Win XP. The last working version is 2.09. But the discontinuation of XP support has not been announced, so it's a bug, but I couldn't find how to inform the developer about the problem, there is no forum or feedback.

  5. ... Oops dear Dave , isn't that a contradiction of sorts? Not really, as when I posted the first quote I hadn't been told by @Sampei.Nihira about the way that uBlock Origin Lite works, which gave me the clue as to what was actually happening. I hadn't made the connection until then.

  8. Facebook as well as all these social media sites have become overbloated more and more day by day and year by year. I've just logged in an old FB account in Mypal 68, and the RAM eating started. Only my FB front page open, and Mypal 68 consumes 750 MB. I won't test this crappy service in Thorium as there is not enough RAM for such bad sites. I think such social media sites are more made for mobile devices the last years. On Android, there are corresponding apps for each of these services. Personally, I do not use these services. And I hate them all.

  10. I had those right from the start with all ported forks of Chrome that came out after v.111. I found a good China made fork which doesn't have any of those problems, but it doesn't run on XP, otherwise I'd given it to you a long time ago. Unfortunately, I can't be of help since I'm on a very long vacation. And making a further research is not so convenient from an iPad. As a quick fix, try to use the below command. https://msfn.org/board/topic/186133-thorium/?do=findComment&comment=1270805

  12. Looks I'll be waiting for that popup for quite some time. Probably not worth continuing at this point. 32 videos in, only thing wrong is that tab keeps hammering one CPU core at 100% when focused even if video is paused. I'd also need that script @NotHereToPlayGames mentioned that prevents the other popup that pauses video for inactivity / being away from the computer to be able to leave it unattended. Sure, it may work for the few of us, but uBO has large user base, there are many websites out there, and it's a fact that both filter authors' and users' feedback shaped it to become like it is today. Thanks, I'm aware of it, though I don't feel it to be needed for me at this time. Also, well, Firefox with more recent uBO is just a click away. Sure, it's a bit different, but honestly it's not that bad even if my ramblings here would have you believe otherwise. I'm more bothered by other things in life that don't have to do with computers.

  13. My copy of Thorium has now started running out of memory when scrolling on sites like Facebook and Instagram. It didn't use to do this, it was much better than Supermium in that respect, and it's been fine for months. Anyone any idea why it would suddenly start doing this, I haven't knowingly changed anything which might have caused it? Of course, the sites themselves may have changed, but any changes made haven't caused any obvious visual changes in them.

  14. It should be mentioned at this point that I do not use uBO Legacy 1.16.4.35 at factory defaults. I use a different set of filter lists than the default one. Furthermore, I use additional lists, own rules and scripts. The initial, default setting is only a basic one and is not YouTube related. And I didn't get a video ad on the second video.

  15. But now that various theories have been put forward about YouTube and overlay pop-ups with warnings to the user, I am happy to put forward my theory, which I will not verify or prove in any way. Google, and therefore YouTube, wants to make money. If users use the service over a long period of time without being a premium customer and yet without getting and watching any adverts, then this will certainly be registered by YouTube and therefore by Google in whatever way. These users must then have been using an adblocker the whole time and will eventually receive this overlay pop-up warning.

  16. You didn't say that in this post. You only talked about a certain number of videos. Now suddenly, it's the duration. Somehow I get the feeling that these are just unsubstantiated theories and nothing more. But YouTube is a crappy interface and no option for browsers on my system. I use YouTube itself only on my Android tablet. Anyway! Opening videos via the legacy extension uTube is much, much, much better than the original YouTube interface. So, I am not interested in investigating the YouTube interface in UXP browsers.

  18. Important to mention, making this a standalone post. Those jailed ones were not committing real crimes (in contrast to the ones Durov is being accused of). They are punished for the disagreement with Russia's policies.
    1 point
  19. But Durov's VK did accept those demands of the Russian government, there are literally tons of criminal cases against Russian citizens based on their posts in VK. VK gave out all info, including real addressees to the Russian FSB, plenty of arrests were made, then followed by criminal prosecution. Also, Durov made it even worse, without any announcement, he simply sold the VK platform to another Kremlin/FSB controlled oligarch. People were getting jailed for several yeras old posts. It's all publicly known. I obviously shan't post any links, those all are easy to find, I don't want to be falsely blamed for "involving politics into forum" nonsense, so I digress.

  24. Given the all-out panic by the Kremlin concerning Durov's arrest, it is clear that Durov was a critical Russian asset and there will be direct implications on the ground for Russia. They call him the "Chief of Communications for the Russian Armed Forces". 25. Inductive conclusion and generalisation of my empirically acquired data regarding sudden Thorium (Chrome) browser crashes: After all the measures, investigations and my proof, I described in detail in previous posts, I have come to the conclusion that spontaneous, recurring crashes of Chrome browsers, as, for example, Thorium, can be caused first and foremost by drivers or driver corpses, but also by services or programmes, running in the background responsible for interference, among other things like hardware defects and so on, of course. The so-called filter drivers deserve special mention at this point. Many of the Chrome browser crashes that have been numerously reported in different Internet forums, are probably due to this. But without a thorough investigation, such issues can't be clarified, and their real cause was therefore very often never discovered. So, my advice at this point. If such crashes happen, check first the Windows\System32\drivers folder for drivers or driver remnants that could be the causer (in most cases rather drivers from third-party providers), even if they are loaded correctly and do not produce any error messages! Problematic drivers can of course be loaded from other locations than the Windows\System32\drivers folder, too, especially when it comes to third-party drivers, all depending on the respective system, of course.

  32. @Dave-H When you open the original, unmodified loader in Resource Hacker 5.1.8, you will see that its content is listed in italics. This is a sign that you only have restricted access which occurrs if, for example, the file is UPX-compressed. BTW, there is a tool that can process the file immediately under Windows XP without a prior, separate decompression by the user. The tool is called Resource Tuner, but it is a commercial programme. But TBH, Resource Hacker 5.1.8 in combination with the UPX tool is totally sufficient.

  33. @Dave-H For solving browser or other software problems related to drivers and/or services, you can use third-party tools. For example, the DriverView v1.51 tool from NirSoft to easily identify all third-party drivers. However, this tool can only list all drivers but doesn't let you delete or modify any of them. But you get an informative and quick overview. Contrary to it, the Service Manager 4.6 tool from foxplanet.de let you manage and delete all drivers and services. The latter is simply a great piece of software. You can list services and/or drivers in different ways to get a better overview. Try it and you will see yourself! Unfortunately, I hadn't installed it in my secondary, problematic Windows XP partition but only in my primary one. It would have been very helpful if I had consulted it regarding my Thorium issue.

  34. You're welcome! You mean the one that installs another system level driver revoflt.sys to accumulate more Thorium crashes and BSOD? But it's painfully slow on deleting many small files.

  36. My investigation of all other drivers, which might be problematic in that partition, has been finally finished. After all these already performed measures and all this hypothesis stuff , here's now a little and in my opinion quite interesting proof (what else could you expect from me ): Prerequisites: A native Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit without any POSReady updates, Thorium SSE2 122.0.6261.171 WINXP x32, Total Commander and Process Hacker. Assertion: Driver remnants from previously uninstalled programmes can cause spontaneous, irregular crashes of the Thorium browser under Windows XP Professional 32-bit. Proof: The current status at the beginning of this proof: Thorium is still crashing spontaneously, sooner or later, without any recognisable pattern. After a thorough investigation of all installed drivers in this Windows XP partition listed in the prerequisites, I found three drivers in the c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ folder in the form of SYS files, which are loaded correctly after system startup, though. These files are avgntflt.sys, avipbb.sys and avkmgr.sys whose manufacturer is Avira. They are automatically loaded at system startup and logged in the Event Viewer as properly loaded drivers. That's why I didn't notice them earlier as I only looked there for errors. However, there are no programmes of this manufacturer installed any longer in this partition. This was indeed the crucial hint. After checking and unpacking all installation files that could have installed these drivers in the past, I was able to identify the culprit. It was the crappy Wise Anti Malware 2.2.1, which was installed for a short time for testing purposes only. With the help of Process Hacker and Total Commander, I was able to stop the associated processes and completely remove all three driver files, but only after restarting the system. Immediately afterwards, I opened the Thorium browser, configured it completely and restarted the browser several times. No first launch crashes anymore! Various pages were called up. The browser did not crash even once, no matter what actions were performed. Now, Thorium is working absolute stably in this partition as it is in my POSReady partition. So, these three drivers or at least, one of them (probably the avgntflt.sys driver as it is a filter driver and was more difficult to remove), were definitely the cause of the permanent Thorium crashes. q.e.d. PS: So, forget about my formerly created hypotheses H0! They all have to be rejected with an empirically determined probability of type I error of nearly 0. There is no indication that Thorium requires POSReady updates under Windows XP 32-bit, at least at the moment.

  37. Regarding my issue with sudden Thorium crashes, I performed the following measures so far: Checking the file system for errors. Checking the integrity of the partition structure. Purging the partition in terms of trash/temp files. Complete defragmentation of the partition. Offline defragmentation of pagefile and registry files. Clearing and reorganising of the prefetch files. Checking the registry for errors and fixing them. Checking for missing updates performed by Legacy Update. Adding a couple of Windows updates which weren't offered by WU/MU. Installation of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 - 2019 Redistributable Package as it is also installed in the POSReady partition. Verifying the integrity of the DirectX 9.0c installation. Verifying the integrity of all .NET Framework installations. Uninstalling or disabling programmes which are permanently loaded and don't exist in my POSReady installation. Checking all autostart programmes and services. Fixing of all errors from the event log. Configuration of all services corresponding to my POSReady installation. Updating of programmes, which are permanently loaded, to the same version as in the POSReady installation. Update of the root certificates. Fixing a network error and adjusting all network settings. Graphics card driver completely uninstalled, all leftovers cleaned and more recent driver version installed. Now, my Windows XP Pro SP3 installation without POSReady updates is completely error-free except the issue with sudden Thorium crashes . The good is this Windows XP installation is now even fresher and faster than ever. My next measure is the check of all other drivers in that partition which might be problematic.
