TBH, all this benchmark stuff doesn't help me at all. I play a certain YouTube video on the browsers and know immediately whether hardware acceleration is being used or not. The problem with Thorium, however, is that part of the hardware acceleration (GPU rasterisation) is not running properly on my hardware. Your benchmark images don't help me at all. And comparing different browsers with each other makes no sense either. You have probably not configured Mypal 68 correctly via about:config. Switching on hardware acceleration in the options page of Mypal 68 is not enough, at least in my installation.3 points

I tested the most recent Chrome XP API Adapter on my system with Pentium 4 single-core and NVIDIA 6200. Generally, this adapter is great as it offers the possibility to enable hardware acceleration. Although the hardware acceleration can be switched on, there are negative side-effects. All popups now have a black background, which then appears as a black frame. Apart from that, the GPU rasterisation does not really work and leads to permanent delays. Furthermore, some of my toolbar icons that belong to extensions disappear. Thus, I had to switch off GPU rasterisation. Contrary to these problems in Thorium, the hardware acceleration in Mypal 68 and New Moon 28 works great without any problems. That means hardware acceleration is generally possible on my system and can be used if this feature is supported by a browser, especially with hardware as old as mine.3 points

Microsoft VPN will surely work with Bing.2 points

Nice, but only if Microsoft will flatten to the ground those pesky sites that always want to see your IP so they can track you. Cloudfare, for example. Otherwise - useless, and it looks more like a marketing strategy. If such sites will still block that VPN, too, this whole idea serves no purpose to us.2 points

Inability of this browser to properly play such common format as AV1, which is literally everywhere now, is indeed on-topic, so don't be shy to post your issues. I just checked the link, it also froze on me, so we both have the same issue on the same series of 700 nVidia cards, despite being on different OS.2 points

I'm in no way as advanced as you when it comes to gaming ! I mostly play smth with racing and recently Iron Harvest Deluxe Edition which is win10 only. Some other member made fixes to the game so it starts no problem, despite being 11.2 or 11.1 (?). Also, sometimes DOA5/DOA6 (DX11). I don't play online , sorry !2 points

So far we have only one (1) somewhat modern game with mediocre specs that runs on Windows 7 . Elden Ring starts with a black screen, despite my GPU supporting DX12, I tried that "Fake" DX12 fix and it didn't work. Stray cat also dind't work , not to mention the other several games I tried and wrote in the topic about non-working soft on win 7.2 points

I really appreciate you're being honest and respectful ! I said, no mocking. And RDR2 worked for me without Volcano ! It had stutters with it and I I just deleted it and the game ran quite fine , perhaps it has something to do with my GPU being 12GB ? I dunno ! But apart from RDR2 (2019) - no other modern games worked. I used that last 471 driver (which btw is slower than 456). You wrote you aren't on Vista anymore. I'm confused. Anyways, thanks again.2 points

DirectAccess is the latest feature to hit the list of deprecated features in Windows client and server editions. For those unfamiliar, DirectAccess was introduced in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 as a new method for clients to connect to their corporate networks without installing a VPN. However, with time, Microsoft developed new network capabilities to improve the experience, and now it is ready to replace DirectAccess with a better alternative. According to the official documentation, Microsoft suggests migrating from DirectAccess to Always On VPN: DirectAccess is deprecated and will be removed in a future release of Windows. We recommend migrating from DirectAccess to Always On VPN. Microsoft has a dedicated page that describes why users should move from DirectAccess to Always On VPN and how IT admins can implement the change. You can check it out on the official Microsoft Learn website. Besides DirectAccess and NTLM, in 2024, Microsoft deprecated Driver Verifier GUI, NPLogonNotify and NPPPasswordChangeNotify APIs, TLS server authentication with short RSA keys, and Test Base for Microsoft 365. As a reminder, deprecated and removed features are not the same. Components that are no longer in active development may remain in the operating system for a while and even continue to work. However, they do not receive new functionality or fixes. Eventually, Microsoft deletes them from Windows, as was the case with WordPad, which is no longer part of the upcoming Windows 11 version 24H2 update. You can track the list of deprecated features in client Windows versions here. Recently, we also published a list of features Microsoft no longer develops in Windows Server 2025, so check it out here. OK, it worked for that guy somehow, so should have worded a bit differently. I think I just got a black window back then. Still, better try this: https://storage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-continuous/index.html?prefix=Win/291943/ Just remember to disable GPU blocklist on chrome://flags page. Though TBH I'm not sure if canvas accel works specifically, hard to test in reality such an outdated browser, but period correct WebGL stuff seems to work. None of that slow 100% CPU sucking SwiftShader nonsense. The hint comes from https://superuser.com/questions/958238/how-to-enable-webgl-on-chrome-on-xp. I like the last comment from the guy who asked: Interesting, but I have updated to Win10, so I can't test. I think Chrome no longer supports XP anyways.1 point

Good! In this case we (at least) know who will read through our communications! That VPN is supposedly aimed to use SHA 2, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHA-2 SHA-2 (Secure Hash Algorithm 2) is a set of cryptographic hash functions designed by the United States National Security Agency (NSA), NSA are the good guys, I don't mind them reading my emails, I don't plot against America.1 point

Implying WineD3D actually works, much less works well (tried the suggested hack years ago, didn't get anywhere). Bogging down Pentium 4 with translating D3D to OpenGL, it's a great idea!1 point

Unfortunately, no. It doesn't work properly on my system.1 point

jaclaz, you're absolutely right, no doubt. The problem is - that person originally wrote about external HDD in boxes, which are (and you know it perfectly fine) absolutely different matter due to the onboard chip that emulates sectors for XP, just like again we explained. We probably need to pin it up to avoid further confusing posts like from that person. Related matter is, starting somewhere in 2017(?) they ceased to make such external boxes, the disk and its contents is fully visible when connected via SATA directly to a Vista machine, but not visible in XP anymore, of course. XP suggests to format it.1 point

Running a VM not necessarily for remote access. There are programs that can run VMs, I use VMWare Player. The issue you had is that you don't have a lot of storage space. Offloading where the OS is located to another machine on a VM would alleviate that issue because you would be using disk space on a different computer. Running an emulator/hypervisor on the device and then making a VM to run inside of it does not solve your issue. Why do you need OSX? Think or Swim runs on Windows. And since that is a serious business software, it may be better to pay the price of doing business and buy/use something with a larger hard disk.1 point

I don't have GTX 980 or anything from 900 series, but I've just tried on an El-cheapo Acer notebook with nVidia 820M, Driver version 348.12 (Acer exclusive, came on the disk). It has the same issue with AV1 freezing! S,o we have a third, fully confirmed case!1 point

Sync works perfectly on Thorium and Supermium for me, and they sync quite happily with the 'official' Google Chrome which I now have on Windows 10. I was always sorry that it wasn't there on 360Chrome. Anyway, back on topic now!1 point

First off, I so missed you, man! Let me hug you with my big arms! Be on your guard with the Group of Mean Trolls. The one in the hat already gave you a rather unwelcome greeting, despite knowing your situation! Try to ignore them, it drives them crazy. I'll support you with everything I can, please have a nice time, regenerate to the fullest!1 point

Maybe, the most recent version also works under Win 8.1+, and they simply forgot to update their homepage. I can only say that this tool works as advertised and does its job. Not so easy to find XP/Vista-compatible antivirus tools nowadays.1 point

Here are two screenshots of MWAV - eScan Antivirus Toolkit, one of the program's main window, the other of the updater, both taken from my installation: The installer file is about 300 MB in size. To install MWAV on the computer, I recommend extracting the installer manually to the target directory and calling the executable file mexe.com or MWAVL.exe there. Reason: If the installer is called directly, all files are extracted to the system's temporary folder. For me, this is not an option. The program is compatible with Windows XP/Vista/7/8 and 2008, comes from Germany and is currently available in version 22.0.52 (DB). Don't worry, the program's interface is in English if this is your system language! Getting a second opinion in case of doubt or checking the system quickly, offline, is a good idea in any case. I have therefore integrated it into my system. Kind regards, AstroSkipper1 point

While researching for an antivirus program which still works under Windows XP, I came across an interesting offline virus scanner that is still fully XP-compatible. The program is called MWAV - eScan Antivirus Toolkit. It is free for private and home use. MWAV provides the ability to scan for any virus, spyware, adware or other dangerous software on your computer. MWAV requires no installation and can be run directly from your computer, on whatever media. It can also run when other antivirus software is installed on your computer. The database is continuously updated to detect new spyware and adware, and the scanning engine is constantly improved for faster and smarter detection. Their homepage is in German. Use a translator if German is not your native language. Here is the link: https://www.escanav.de/german/content/products/MWAV/escan_mwav.asp1 point
