  1. Maybe off-topic, care to tell how it performs? AMD still makes 3.6Ghz CPU, it looks low when we almost in 2024.

  3. Hello @Dušan Vićić! As you can see, I already wrote about that. And now, as the end of this summer happened weeks or months ago, Avast stopped delivering definition updates on versions 9/10/11 since November 2023. Thus, I will update my lists in the first posts. Thanks for your reminder!

  4. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=324295.0 Guys, if you don't know, Avast stopped giving definition updates on versions 9/10/11 since November 2023. It means that non-SSE processors are vulnerable now (10.4.2223 was the last non-SSE version) @AstroSkipper Please edit our antimalware list. Dušan Vićić P.S. Avast is slowly closing in on version 18 definition updates... No announcement yet, but XP will lose Avast antivirus support in 5 years, at best... Version 11 was released in 2016, i think. Damn it.

  8. You can! I think @UCyborgported rufus to Vista, I'm sorry, I don't remember which version exactly as I don't use it, but I tried out of curiosity and it worked. Ask him for the links.

  14. welp.. this one is gonna be loooooooooong. it is more than enough for basic tasks, however in gaming it already started to show its age: from what ive heard and saw from my friends and youtube videos, the 5th series a lot better than the 3rd, a really good friend of mine got windows 7 to work on his ryzen 5 5600 & b550 system, so yes, you will get vista to work on a 5th series, id probably stay away from a 3rd gen in 2024 and beyond, since there are still really good upgrade paths to 5th. it struggles with 240hz gaming, which kinda sucks for me why am i absolutely trashing on the ryzen 7 3700x right now? it literally gets demolished by an i9 9900k in any benchmark you can throw at it, now im still gonna be an AMD d$*%rider here and tell you to stay away from intel if you wanna use vista on any intel chip (amd is just miles ahead in the backwards compatibility part), but now lets get to personal experience; I got this chip in mid 2021 when i couldve very well bought a 5th gen cpu (money was tight tho), and i can say it will still work well for the next 10 years, but you can say that about any 2019 cpu if im being real here. The 1% lows are really painful on this chip, but i use 1080p so its not like im gonna notice it much (would hurt on 4k or 1440p), other than that it is pretty good if we arent talking about synthetic tests/benchmarks, but my biggest problem with it overall is that it kinda bottlenecks anything past a 1080ti, and like thats bad. I am probably gonna upgrade 5 months to 1 year, im most likely going to get a ryzen 9 5th gen (yeah yeah scream at me BOOO no upgrade paths!! its not like im gonna run windows 11 on it anyways, i need to for windows 7 and vista) now about the : AMD still makes 3.6Ghz CPU, it looks low when we almost in 2024. for their low end models (ryzen 3's), its really funny how amd can just continue milking low clock speed cpus and people will still buy the chips them the 5th gens have really good clocks tho, like even my laptop's cpu (ryzen 7 5825u) has higher clocks than my ryzen 7 3700x if you want to see some videos about this chip that show you how it performs in 2023, id check these out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QL881FR0IU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caEqZOOAlRc this one isnt about that chip but i have the same chipset as this guy and im considering getting this cpu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK9kd0-LhFM well, thats all i have to say about this very chip, conclusion: id stay away from it in 2024 and beyond, dont get this cpu, get a 5th gen instead EDIT: I shouldve also said that the 3rd generation really made sense back when there was no 5th gen, the 5th generation is really better in all aspects, except for the pricing, any 3rd gen ryzen is 50% cheaper compared to any 5th gen cpu. I'd probably avoid the 3rd generation unless you get your hands on a ryzen 7 3700x for like under 70 american dollars, thats a really sweet deal even tho the cpu kinda sucks (well, it will run games well for like another 2-3 years then it will start being even crappier, i cannot wait to see how 3rd gen ryzen owners complain on reddit about the 1% low stutters

  15. Absolutely agree, I sometimes also mix with an older PowerDVD 16 version, newer are simply terrible. Did you notice MPC-HC keeps getting brighter and brighter? And it's not as sharp as it used to be.

  16. My Google Voice doesn't use verification codes. It's strictly username and password without any two-step BS. But it could be because my fake throwaway Google email address dates way back to 2004 when somebody that already had a Google account had to "invite" me to open a Google account. I admit that I kind of have no clue what is involved in opening new Google accounts nowadays.

  17. Yes, do that, then buy a dedicated PCI_E usb converter (a small board) that has official drivers for USB3 for Vista. Despite my "mental insanity" it works pretty well with my Haswell mobo. I have 100% working USB3.1 ports.
    1 point
  18. I run 32-bit Vista Sp1 on a Haswell machine, I'd gladly run 64-bit, but alas, so: according to you it makes me mentally insane, wow.
    1 point
  19. Oh, and I'm not aware of fully functional USB3.1 drivers, all of that I had tried here had issues, various issues, You'd better buy a dedicated USB card that supports Vista. Splitters may or may not work.
    1 point
  20. What is your Vista? 32 or 64bit? 64bit won't work with anything starting with Haswell normally, not only due to USB3.1 issue. There was a post claiming RTM to be more stable.

  24. I won't pretend I'm 100% safe, the danger could always strike from anywhere. Though the few websites I normally visit don't seem to depend on WebP images, I tried browsing a bit with SeaMonkey, Pale Moon no longer has the pref to turn WebP support off. On the topic of security exploits, I've read (certain?) older Call of Duty games have some nasty remote code execution exploits that according to the some discussions have been used in the wild, it's the case for releases starting from 2009 or so at least. Strange feeling reading about them, I played those online a lot in the good 'ol days. Just mentioning it due to similarity that you don't really have to "do anything wrong", just appear in the wrong lobby at the wrong time and strange things may start to happen on your computer. First time I hear that phrase.

  25. Web server can send whatever it wants regardless of what that header says. You'd have to disable WebP decoding functionality inside the browser, which in case of Chromium based browsers probably means analyzing the disassembled code and altering it so decoding routines don't run. Unless you have the source code which it's compiled from, in that case it could be done without hacking the binaries.

  27. Fellas, wow ! This all could've been said in a couple of words . Just copy (periodically) your data from an old HDD to a new one. Solved ! I don't think @UCyborglives on a volcano or walking in magnetic storm parks in the evenings !

  29. OT: My first computers were an Atari 800 XL with 64 KB RAM from 1984 and an Atari 1040 ST with 1 MB RAM (upgraded to unbeliebable 4 MB) from 1986. One year later, 1987, I bought an external Quantum HDD for my Atari 1040 ST. This HDD is now an unbelievable 36 years old and still working. And both Atari computers, too. A Quantum hard disk was something like a Mercedes at that time and of the very best quality. I am quite sure that you won't get any HDDs in these days which last such a long time. And I should mention that this Quantum HDD never got any data refreshing in all the 36 years. It seems that hard disks of such quality probably don't need that either.

  30. Right! That's why I included it in my collection of emergency programs years ago. I have a bag with many CDs and DVDs for emergencies (more than 100). With these programs, I can access my hard drives, partitions or hardware from the outside of my Windows system partition at any time. BTW, all repairs in terms of computers I do myself, if it is still repairable at all, and have a lot of special tools and measuring instruments for this. All of my computers are built, modified and maintained by myself. AstroSkipper

  31. As I already wrote in previous posts, I used Spinrite 6.0 in the past, and it helped me to refresh old HDDs and to check a few pending sectors on them which were then remapped as good. This program has served me well. And I wouldn't hesitate to use it again if there were problems on my old disks. HDDs that don't survive this tool wouldn't last much longer anyway. A backup of their data is mandatory, only if possible, of course. Just to be on the sunny side of the street!
    1 point
  32. All that said does not mean I refresh my HDDs on a regular base. Sorry, I'm afraid I am too lazy to do that with all my HDDs. But from a physical or technical point of view, refreshing of disks makes perfect sense and can make its contribution as a data preservation strategy. Additionally, checking an HDD in form of data refreshing triggers the controller of such a disk to renew its S.M.A.R.T. values and to decide for example whether pending sectors have to be rated as defective or not. I already did that successfully by using Spinrite in the past. After performing such checks or refreshes, there is a positive side-effect. You will definitely know much more about the health of your disks and the condition of the data on it, including up-to-date S.M.A.R.T. values. AstroSkipper

  33. Good to hear! But we have the theoretical knowledge to understand the instability of magnetic data. In such a case, one can certainly do without such data, even if it would be very welcome. And all this is not a question of belief. It is rather a question of reason. BTW, no one has claimed that data refreshing is a panacea for preserving magnetic information on an HDD. But it is one reasonable strategy, and that is what this thread is about. AstroSkipper

  34. nvwss is some crappy online cloud storage plugin that installs on pro grade cards (like Quadro and Titan). It is located inside of the NvCplSetupInt.exe (installer). I only use the British language installer ("Int"), maybe it's not there in the North American version (NvCplSetupEng.exe) ? To hell with it, I deleted it and I never used it anyways. I can't even boot past the Orb if I install the 398 with the NVCPL, without the CPL the driver itself works alright, but I can't answer your question, I don't know how it would look like with the 398.11. Go to the ProgramFiles/NVIDIA Corporation/Display - there you will find the files that are responsible for Video, TV and 3D settings. Example : nvGameS.dll is for the American version of 3D settings, nvGameSR.dll is for the British language of them. (where they properly spell colour, etc). nvViTvSR.dll is for the TV settings colour (Britsih). nvDispSR.dll is for your British display (monitor) settings, those are language only, so you also need the ones without the "R". So if you were able to boot, and the files are in place, you could choose the settings, in theory.

  35. Oh I see , thanks for the explanations . I think there's a guide here at MSFN on how to disable updates .

  36. Isn't there a chance to check how they work before the purchase ? I mean, switch them on in the shop ? Or look at the same model from the shelf ? I'm sorry, I don't know about this process in poor countries.

  37. Some days ago , there was no ability to view MSFN if you're not logged in ! I think it was a test . Everything goes this insane route . Twitter , Instagram , Facebook aren't letting you read if you're not logged in . Just tried them all . Of course there are some ways to prevent Twitter nag screens , but they not always work. And with Instagram and Facebook , no such ways.

  39. Nah , it's with VSync ON . It's capped to 60FPS. If I turn the Vsync OFF , I'll see 268 Watt in a matter of seconds ! This is an absolute maximum allowed by the official BIOS . I'm happy I have a good 750W PSU ! (German brand). The whole system power draw (without the monitor) is at 600W in the game "menu" !!! The clocks will go even higher than 1124Mhz (which is insane !) . This is very similar to my previous GTX980 card . Both cards can't be "bad" , right ? The m0ronic game I took the screenshot of , states GTX960 as the reqs (LOL). Don't try it on your GT750TI . May blow it . No jokes . Besides , other users say the same, like Dixel wrote earlier. @UCyborg, how do you feel , BTW . Aren't you forgetting you need to rest ? I can't read posts without logging in , can you ?
    1 point
  40. Well , I'm not the only one with the Titan , It's (at least) three users I can count here . Just entered the game for you (the card is NOT heated up yet!). And it's 73 degrees and more than 208W of the Total Power Consumption already ! Which is 250W total (max.) for the Titan X . Now look at the clocks . The base clock for Titan X is 1000 MHz , why the hell it entered the Boost Mode ?! It's at 1123 Mhz ALREADY so it went higher than the Boost Clock (which is 1089 MHz for Titan X, see the specs below) . Why is this torture needed just for the game menu !? Gpu load is at 77% and will go higher after 3-5 Mins , I just don't want to do it ! It will go up to 107%. So , I'm not bottlenecked by the CPU , but your system behaves odd . https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-titan-x.c2632
