  1. ... Well, "Dwm" stands for Desktop Window Manager, and that one is only present on Vista+...

  3. Nope, because whomever it was bragged about his 100th post. Then somebody pointed out that it only took THREE DAYS. My guess is that moderators stepped in, "warned him", and he voluntarily abandoned MSFN after the "warning". Who knows, as I wasn't here 20 years ago.

  9. The last version adwcleaner for XP is 6.047 (2017-05-19) https://download.toolslib.net/download/file/1/851?s=gP7VLih67fmmhqhqfLTpmYQR0FtB2J4p and it does not have a cloud version. In 7.4.2 before to see the error message in user32.dll I had to download and attach the dwmapi.dll v. 6.0.5384.4 to executable file.

  10. This article below by MB: https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039579393-Windows-XP-and-Vista-compatibility-with-Malwarebytes-AdwCleaner hints that "Versions before 8.0 may still work on a Windows XP", emphasis (mine ) put on "may"... FWIW, I have local records kept that indicate that the XP_EoS version of Malwarebytes AdwCleaner is/was v6.047 : There doesn't exist a GUI button to update the "database", only an "option" to use the "local" or the "server" one: I did perform a quick scan with the default setting of "server"; I had to open the log file to, sadly, find out that only the extremely outdated "local" database was used for the scan: # AdwCleaner v6.047 - Logfile created 26/04/2023 at 00:25:03 # Updated on 19/05/2017 by Malwarebytes # Database : 2017-05-19.1 [Local] # Operating System : Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium Service Pack 2 (X86) # Username : (redacted) # Running from : (redacted)\adwcleaner_6.047[XPEOL].exe # Mode: Scan # Support : https://www.malwarebytes.com/support I don't have an XP machine available currently to check whether v7.4.2 does, indeed, launch there ; that version does launch under Vista SP2 x86 - incidentally, it offers to update the app to v8.4.0, but that offer should be declined, as (consistent with the article I linked above) that one doesn't launch under Vista (so why offer it in the first place? ) ... Like its predecessor, v7.4.2 has a default setting of "Automatically using the cloud database if available": I performed a second scan with v7.4.2, its log file now reads that it used a "database" from Oct 10th 2022, i.e. a stale one from 6 1/2 months ago (!) : # ------------------------------- # Malwarebytes AdwCleaner 7.4.2.0 # ------------------------------- # Build: 10-21-2019 # Database: 2022-10-10.1 (Cloud) # Support: https://www.malwarebytes.com/support # # ------------------------------- # Mode: Scan # ------------------------------- # Start: 04-26-2023 # Duration: 00:00:35 # OS: Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium # Scanned: 32074 So, I don't know what to make of that , certainly can't answer whether that is considered as "definitions still provided for it" ; "use at your own risk" would be my advice ...

  12. I thought, if every one can post on MSFN crappy random youtube video, why can't I do the same?

  13. Yes, I know that, I meant to post the image of the error message that appears when running adwcleaner_7.4.2.exe. Technically speaking, v7.4.2 can be installed on XP SP3, it's just that the Entry Point Not Found errors are preventing adwcleaner_7.4.2.exe from starting on XP, I knew this when I ran adwcleaner_7.4.2.exe on my Vista SP2 VM under Windows XP compatibility mode with no problems. I already know that, it was already mentioned on this post of the topic. Well, after I put dwmapi.dll, it then complained about missing _except_handler4_common in msvcrt.dll, so I had to install this (use a translator, as this is a link to a Japanese site), and then, the error about missing _except_handler4_common in msvcrt.dll went away, but it then gave me this error I wrote about previously.

  15. Does the monitor lose signal? I think I'd run MemTest in any case, just in case, next would be to see if the issue only happens on Windows and if replacing the graphics card with a spare (if you have it) helps.

  16. Slightly OT (continuing from mentioned old Atari computers and old disks), seems the oldest tech still at home are the two ISKRA car battery chargers (POKO 10 and POBI), from the 80s if not older. I know POBI still works and the other one should as well. Until last year, we still used the freezing cabinet from Gorenje that must have been at least 37 years old. But the rubber or whatever material covering the pipes deteriorated to the point that it wasn't fully cooled anymore. The people that might still remember its exact age, they're long dead. A gloomy remark, none of us will work as well in 40 years.

  20. Sure, and noone said (or at least I never said) that this kind of posts violate MSFN rules. They do violate the (unwritten) rules of good taste and common sense, which are - as you might well know - two among the most uncommon things, and anyway very flexible and personal ones, so noone (I believe) should be banned for violating them. But a stern look of disapproval seems appropriate anyway: jaclaz

  23. Do we really need to see on MSFN this survivalist/conspirationist/apocalyptic crap? <- this is a rhetoric question, the answer is NO. msfntor, it is already tiring to see all the meaningless, non techinical crap you post on this (supposedly technical) board every single §@ç#ing day, often many times each day, but this is too much. Mind you, you are perfectly free to insist on this as much as you want, but at least you now know how at least one MSFN user is fed up with this senseless garbage. jaclaz

  24. Thanks. I had already browser.cache.disk.parent_directory set to go to z:\cache]profilename. I'm trying now browser.cache.offline.parent_directory, which I created in about:config (string), works ( I can see Z:\cahe]proflilename/cache2 populating. . As per 360chrome it is easy: assuming you use the 360Loader.ini in @articfoxie;s mods, you only have to set the following line" [Environment] Profile=z:\Chrome\User Data If like me you have a preset group of files you want to keep constant in the user data\default folder, you will have to adjust the corresponding path in your bats. I will keep tinkering to see how yo move the sp52 profiles to rabmdisk and repot @Dave-H, consider moving this and the last @7jn posts somewhere to https://msfn.org/board/forum/201-browsers-working-on-older-nt-family-oses/? 26. This thread is about antivirus programs targeting Windows XP SP3 only. Posting a list of antivirus programs targeting Windows Vista is not really helpful and rather misleading. There are a lot of versions inside this list which won't work under Windows XP SP3. Anyway!I know this list but it doesn't belong here. At least, you should change the headline to "AntiVirus & Security Software for Windows Vista". To answer your question, Malwarebytes Free v3.5.1 should serve perfectly your needs. I use Malwarebytes Premium v3.5.1 under Windows XP. It is the last version for Windows XP but still receives definition updates. Its detection rate is very good. Only the premium version has a background guard.

  28. Do you mean Serpent by sp52? There are two configuration setting for moving the disk cache in Serpent. I would still want the rest of my profile to be on disk. browser.cache.disk.parent_directory browser.cache.offline.parent_directory I think 360Chrome accepts a command-line parameter for this. But I don't use 360Chome. --disk-cache-dir

  29. Do you installed the March 2023 build? (Microsoft Office uses its own independent API, and please note that NOT ALL 32-bit programs have such issue.)
    1 point
  30. Try running any 32-bit programs. For example, you can run Notepad from the SysWOW64 folder, and then try opening the file (Ctrl-O or File -> Open...), or write some characters and try saving to a file. Those will not work at all since the open/save dialog won't show anymore after March 2023 build.

  32. What are you exactly trying to do? If you want to restore Windows Update v6/Microsoft Update v6, there's a simple method: Run the install.cmd in Restore_WU_XP or Restore_WU_XP_2003. Click cancel at the prompt. Install and run ProxHTTPSProxyMll v1.3a. Install the certificate (CA.crt) on the client Windows XP machine. Run the proxy, and go to the Windows Update website in the Windows XP machine, and there you go.

  33. You have to add ?g_sconsumersite=1 after aspx to open the website. But scanning won't work unless you apply redirects (patching wuaueng and registry or using another proxy). If you run my installer (any Windows) or the one in the 1st post (XP only) you'll have everything working

  37. Hi everyone! So, I managed to pretty much get x64 XP running on my 12900k! USB n all, including the chipset thanks to XP2ESD! However, after I installed my GTX 770 drivers (both 355.98 and 368.81), I rebooted, and it just hangs at the XP boot screen. Oddly enough, sometimes when I say "Last known good config", it boots perfectly, even with my GPU drivers working! But, it is not consistant, and for the most part, it does not even work (does the same thing). Even safe mode doesn't boot at times!

  38. You have your own thread about this in the Windows 2000 section, where it should be. You can tag any contributor to this thread in that thread. The same will happen with Windows 2003 should the contributors here deem it to be necessary.

  41. Well this is nice to know. I can confirm that the updates work on my 8 system as well: http://prntscr.com/a1pp70 I hope we're able to keep updating 8 until 2023 with this method. Technically, I could upgrade to 8.1, but since 8 works, I just don't see a reason to do so at this time. Since I still use Vista on some other machines, I'll be grateful if that works as well. I had planned to continue using Vista as my main OS until at least 2017, but after building my new haswell machine, the hardware just won't take Vista at all. I'm really enjoying the speed and added desktop features/improvements of 8 over Vista though, so I can't say I really miss Vista too much. I also found myself running into so many compatibility issues with Vista with other software, unfortunately. Anyway, thanks for finding this out.

  42. Well I'm happy even as it is. Plus this also gives Vista users added hope (since they're in a similar situation). They'll likely be able to do the same with patches from the original Server 2008.

  43. Hmm, just because you can't download it... I wonder if you got your hands on it, would it install anyway? Then the next wonder would be if it is an installer issue, if you could get around that could it be forced? Maybe not, but still... Hey, at least you shouldn't be harassed to update to Windows 10, since your system won't even run Windows 8.1. Cheers and Regards

  44. You may get the v11 update, now that you know the KB, from the MS Update Catalog... Search for "2012" or perhaps "Server", then sort by "latest first", by clicking on the release date column header. Try it, and let me know.

  45. Well would you look at that. Looks good to me So I guess Server 2012 Updates do install.
    1 point
  46. Well I got home later than I anticipated, but ran System Restore to create a Restore Point. Then I downloaded six updates (five for Windows Server 2012, and one for Internet Explorer 10). I had shut off the Windows Update service and had cleared the \Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder on a previous occasion, so I started the service and let the folder populate. Then I manually installed all of the updates one by one. (KB3115858, KB3123294, KB3126593, KB3126587 and KB3124280, plus KB3134814 for IE10) Now I had removed IE10 from my system (and even deleted the disk payload for the feature using the DISM command), but I thought perhaps that the IE update would improve security in the IE engine files that may still reside on the system. All updates installed without incident. Now to reboot. Be right back ...

  47. I have noticed, for whatever it may be worth, that WSUS Offline Downloader has dispensed with any inclusion of updates for Windows NT 6.2, as of v10.4. So neither Windows 8 no Server 2012 has been included. How do they expect downloading of Server 2012 patches? Patch Tuesday is tomorrow, so I'll keep you posted.

  48. What do you need to customize in Server 2012? I remember with Server 2003, I had to enable Media Player and Internet connectivity if I wanted to even browse.. I adjusted RAM for programs vs cache. Does it come with the main Windows 8 desktop, or is it like "Classic"?
