  2. That's nuts.... I never imagined IE6 to get it working in 95!!! (real talk, MS could made it possible to do this if they really wanted, but, ya know, 95 was approaching EOL in a couple of months, XP was a huge deal, so they didn't do it, cuz it would be a waste of time and money. Nuff said)

  3. Finally, the WINDOWS UPDATE HAS COME BACK TO WINDOWS 98/ME!!!! (read this in The Rock's voice) Took it long enough... (11 YEARS!?!?) I will test the website tomorrow ASAP (98 on VM, 2000 on real computer). By the way, i would remind you that you shall do some negotiations with Legacy Update team to include V4 on their sites, if you want... We can host our private servers, you know, we already have our domain... I've just gave some facts to consider what is next... Also, you can extract all official (and unofficial) updates in the AutoPatcher for Windows 98. The real thing is rewritting the download links to make this thing working... Still, HUGE freaking congrats to all of those who made this website functional!!!!! Cheers, mates!

  4. 1) Last fix mainly for x64, for W2003 and W2003/XP x64 we still don't have SP2 correct headers, so pre-v8 is far to be even "beta" I will update topic to include fix only for x32 XP 2) Assertion Fail on loaddsdt.c, line 488 for x64 builds (v8 update) This is x64 fix for semi-broken VirtualBox's ACPI BIOS tables, real systems don't have this problem

  6. ... I've been wrong about file cert8.db, which seems to contain NSS security certificates; but I've always known that itself and key3.db file are interlinked (the same is true for key4.db+cert9.db used in recent Firefox versions). key3.db is indeed the file that stores the password decryption key in UXP-based browsers; logins.json is the one that stores the encryptred credentials (this format was first implemented in Fx32+, previously other formats/filenames were used: signons.txt, signons2.txt, signons3.txt, signons.sqlite; all these, plus logins.json, require key3.db to work). https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1210914 I've never used one myself, but it's the implementation of a Master Password by the user that will make it impossible to transfer stored account credentials to a different machine... http://kb.mozillazine.org/Master_password As for key4.db, I'm adamant it's NOT currently used in UXP-based browsers; my dirty St52 profile does NOT contain it, my dirty St55 profile does NOT contain it, my semi-fresh NM28 profile does NOT contain it! As a further test, I just launched a pristine/fresh NM28 profile [version is 28.10.6a1 (32-bit) (2023-04-13)]; that fresh profile only contains a key3.db (& cert8.db) file, NO SIGN of a key4.db one... If I then store a single account there (e.g., my MSFN forum credentials), no sign, again, of a further key*.db file: Transferring just key3.db+logins.json from my St52 dirty profile to the NM28 "fresh" one was sufficient here to migrate all my accounts...

  7. Although details about this procedure have been posted numerous times, let me refresh it once more: a) "my New Moon profile": Are we talking about NM27 or NM28? I'll assume it's NM28 the case here... b) In the "old"/existing installation of NM28: Launch the browser, then 1. Load "about:support" => Application Basics => Profile Folder => click "Open Folder" button A Windows Explorer window should open, displaying the contents of the currently used NM28 user profile. 2. Proceed to exit the browser, but do NOT close the profile dir window opened in previous step... 3. On a removable disk media (e.g. a USB stick), create an empty folder (the name of which is irrelevant, e.g. "oldNM28prof"), inside which you should copy and transfer ALL the contents of the profile dir "window" (of step 1) c) In the "new" machine (Win7 SP1 x86), you should have already installed the exact same NM28 version present initially in the XP SP3 x86 machine - slightly newer NM28 versions can be excused, as the profiles are forward compatible, but - in general - backward compatibility isn't guaranteed (i.e. transferring a profile touched by a newer version to an older browser version). 1. Launch just once NM28 in the Win7 machine, so as to allow the creation of a new profile there... 2. With a procedure similar to b1, locate and open the NM28 profile dir, then exit the browser (but, again, keep the profile window open) 3. In that open profile window, DELETE all the extant dirs+files, but continue to leave the window open. 4. Connect the USB stick in the Win7 machine, then open the folder (e.g. "oldNM28prof") with the saved contents of the old NM28 profile; select and COPY ALL the contents of that folder. 5. In the open window of step c3, PASTE ALL copied content in step c4. 6. You can now close all unwanted explorer windows, detach the USB stick and proceed to launch NM28 in the Win7 machine; if all was done correctly, then you should now have a "mirror" of the XP SP3 NM28 profile... Since the two machines are not identical hardware-wise (or are they?), some small differences are to be expected between old/new profiles inside about:config, but extensions (and their settings)/bookmarks/visited sites/download history/site account credentials, etc. should be identical... Actually, UXP-based browsers are no longer using the key4.db file; they did for some brief period, maybe two years ago, but the files associated with password storage are now cert8.db, key3.db and logins.json I routinely copy St52/NM28 whole profiles between my Vista SP2 x86 laptop and sister's Win7 SP1 x64 laptop and account credentials transfer fine between the two - I don't have an XP machine available currently, but I don't expect it to behave differently... I've stopped following Firefox's demise past version 52esr, so am not sure what they have later implemented with regards to profile migration between different machines ... What you described is indeed true for Chromium-based browsers like all 4 360EE variants known to this community, because password encryption/decryption is tied to the machine the password has been created on (to make matters worse , not even installed extensions of a 360EE profile are transferrable across different machines) ... Best regards

  8. This whole stuff: 1) makes no sense whatsoever 2) should it make sense in some very specific, niche situation, we don't have any meaningful, valid, data to support the method, let alone the frequency at which it should be implemented If you feel good refreshing your data, do it. If you feel good refreshing your data every year, do it every year, if you feel good doing it every 2-3 years, do it every 2-3 years. You will anyway lose some data before or later (or possibly you will never lose any) but there is no way to know in advance nor any way to know whether this strategy contributed in any meaningful way to the outcome (whatever that happens to be). Replicating data (having multiple copies, on different media and stored in different location) is an effective strategy, though it is difficult to implement, let alone maintain over the years. The only thing that promised (but has to be seen if they delivered) long enough data retention were (are?) M-DISCs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-DISC jaclaz

  18. Unfortunately, you are wrong. There are indeed physical reasons for losing data. I'll give you a hint. It's called magnetism when it comes to HDDs. But even for SSDs, there are physical processes that can lead to data loss. Here is a German article to bring you a little closer to the subject: https://www.computerwoche.de/a/der-langsame-tod-von-festplatten-und-ssds,3549906 Use a translator if German is not one of your languages! 19. Yep, that's what I said. For transferring all passwords on the same machine and system, the file cert8.db is not absolutely necessary. BTW, I use a Master Password in my old, main NM profile, though. And the file cert9.db still exists, too.

  22. I spotted that Google Drive still supports Windows 8(.1) and not Windows 7. I haven't figured out why since the latest version is using Chromium 105 as it's browser engine. Nonetheless, I think support for 8(.1) will eventually end this year as well, if they choose to upgrade the version to anything higher than 109.

  28. With limited testing on v112.3.4.3, the only time I witness any odd connections is when "secure DNS" is enabled - making me NOT TRUST this so-called "secure" DNS. It is better to set up your Operating System to use "secure DNS" than it is to rely on any web browser to perform that task for you, once that is "embedded" into the web browser, it can make ANY connection it wants to! There are some embedded "always accept cookies" web sites but I've not seen them create cookies so long as you do not visit those web sites. The embedded list is easily removable in chrome.dll - but I'm left with an "empty" web site instead of a none-added note, so still investigating.

  34. I completely agree...that's one among various reasons why I'd like to stick with pre-10 Windows as long as possible. 7 is the 'sweet spot' for me: close in spirit to XP (as it was the last version before Metro and apps became a thing), compatible with a lot of modern software and old/new hardware, better compatibility than 10 with legacy software/hardware, and one of the last versions with a true 'componentized' build. It seems that 8.1 Standard is one of the last versions of Windows to give an end user the opportunity to customize their installation and make it as big or small as they like within reason. While LTSB/LTSC does lose a lot of what made the Embedded versions of Windows (and pre-10 Windows in general) so good, I respect how most of the fluff found in mainline 10 is stripped out...in that sense, it gets much closer than mainline 10 to Embedded in the spirit of how it was designed. At this time, my current plan is to stay with Thin PC (though I may go back to POSReady 2009 from time to time, either to test any new XP-targeted software that comes out or for purposes of maintaining compatibility with older hardware that 7 may have some issues with) and migrate to 10 LTSC in the next few years (perhaps sooner if I end up using a PC modern enough to lose out on full 7 driver support).

That post has been already posted by @Humming Owl on the exact day (Mar 22nd) "his" builds were "updated": https://msfn.org/board/topic/182876-360-extreme-explorer-modified-version/?do=findComment&comment=1241679 BTW, I enclosed updated in quotation marks because, IIUC, nothing new web-compatibility-wise was introduced, instead some core DLLs were given the "rebase" treatment so as to reduce RAM consumption under Windows XP... So, respectfully, one concludes you must've missed that "notification" post you asked for ... Best Easter wishes

  40. In my opinion, and it's because of version 3 WU, i would go on Windows 95 and NT 4 (Server and Workstation versions). Also you said about getting new inventory system until 2002. Windows 95 was supported until December 31st 2001. (it's a shame that it wasn't long supported) So this does mean that it can recognize all W95 updates with this updated inventory system that has surpassed W95 EOL. You should especially focus on getting this working on 95 with different IE browser versions. (on some browsers it does work, on some it doesn't)

  41. Goddamn, Office Update is now working!!! (almost) I'm super excited about WUv4, especially after seeing the latest news. We are a couple of steps to get it working properly!!! Hosting a update servers for each version would be the final thing to do, in my opinion. Cheers!!!!

  44. Sorry to pop in unannounced, but i have to say that this work in progress is doing pretty well!!! But i have couple of ideas and questions about this project. After you get all WU versions up and running as it was long time ago, you must find a way to host the update servers on the internet, even if it's for the historical purposes. You can create one website in with the server will register with Windows OS are you using between 95, NT 4.0, 98FE, 98SE, ME, 2000 or XP and then select the appropriate update version for each OS. For instance, let's say that you are using Windows 98 and you want to update the computer using the old fashioned way instead of AutoPatcher. User will connect to your website, then website would redirect the user on the WUv4 site and update that computer completely without using AutoPatcher. But i think the real problem would be the 95 users, maybe because IE version is limited to the 5.5 instead of 6.0 or it's because of the compatibility or something else, i don't know. Second. I read that the Windows 98 and NT 4.0 updates are still in Microsoft servers, miraculously, but most of the updates URLs are lost in time. At least the packages are saved on the various sites and utilities on the internet, but is it possible to replace the download links manually to not go to the Microsoft server but instead to go to the host servers? Will the WU work even after you've replaced the original download links? Third. When you've finished with this project, would you post the instructions how can we do this by ourselves step by step to replicate this finished work? I read the whole thread because i was always interested seeing the old WU versions on older Windows systems on YT, but after seeing that you've almost completed replicated the old WU system versions, i was actually impressed of your 5 month work on this project. Keep it up and let's hope that this project is gonna be finished in this year!

  45. Do you plan to upgrade to Windows 10 in the next 12 months? Unfortunately, i must do. After i finish high school so i must have a great and safe Windows 11 laptop. Are you paying for extended support? No, because of 2 reasons. 1. I don't have enough money to pay for that. 2. Some tech dude would break the code and serve us bonus updates past EOL that MS released for ESU users. What is the main reason you haven't upgraded? Windows 7 feels like the proper remake of Windows XP, than Vista. Used it since i bought this Lenovo G580 in 2015. I used this system for a long time and i don't have any complaints except the useless Windows Defender... When i saw Windows 8 (not 8.1, the OG Metro design), i felt like this wasn't Windows OS. I asked my friend "WHERE TF IS THE START MENU?!" just to show me "Metro" Start menu. YEEEEAH, not a good one. Idk what's worse: ME or 8. ME had unstable OS while 8 had NO START MENU and bloky style design. if i would choose, i would choose ME no questions. Because i had no Internet until late 2015 (yeah, i wrote that right), i remember looking on Windows 10 like "back to the basics" OS just to see the disasterous launch. It was yet so strange yet so different from the 7. The main problem in MS is the PRIVACY, MAN! Edge was a bad browser on launch and eventually, MS had to copy the Chromium style browser. For now, Edge is looking pretty good, but it has some privacy bs. And yes let's not forget the importance of Microsoft account in W10 and the infamous Windows Update system that REQUIRES to check for updates. You don't have 100% control over WU in W10, but on 7, you could never check for updates if you want!!! And the final thing is removing the Glass background and replacing with the something worse. Now W11 is a strange topic. The requirements are total "BlueBalls", in my opinion. Why, just WHY are you insisting to upgrade to Intel Core 8th generation if it's working properly on the OLDER PROCESSORS??? And it's proved already. TPM and Secure Boot is just an excuse for getting a newer system!!!!! AND LET'S not FORGET THIS!!!! " Windows 11 Home edition requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account." AYO WHAT THE ****??? "REQUIRES", hahahaaha. This is saying: "Sorry but if you don't have internet connection, we have a product for you! It's called Windows 10!" (yeah it's E3 2013 Xbox 360 joke all over again). Ok, let's forget that topic for now. The main problem is having a Microsoft Account again to access some features, but i cannot forget one thing. Placing Start button IN THE CENTER of the taskbar. When i saw that, i immediately thought "wat, are they copying Mac OS?", but i realized that it can be changed in the settings. THANK GOD. For some reason i think the UI in the W11 is better that W10, and i really think that i should jump straight to the Windows 11 laptop. I really think that they should've fixed all the issues since the quick launch previous year, because i don't want to use a software that it's crashing non-stop. So yeah that is my opinion why am i still using Windows 7 in 2022. Windows 10 is gonna be some weird dream for me, while i still have "some" hope for 11 to at least not add some more privacy issues. In that case, I'm going in a unknown Linux territory.

  46. I reeeeaaalllyyyy hate MEGA and their stupid downloading limits, does anyone have a mirror link from Mediafire or Anonfiles? I genuinely could not figure out how to download all the updates without the download failing (even with Megadownloader), and I ain't paying for premium >:/
