  1. Hello, MSFN! So I'm a computer enthusiast, and I love to mess around with any hardware/software I can find - old or new, good or bad, etc. I have a passion for computer and information science, and I'm currently working on making a career of it. Nice to meet everyone!

  2. I am aware most users these days don't actually use XP as a daily basis unfortunately there's an XP feature I very much like which W7 doesn't have this is the only reason I decided to stick to XP over the past 17 years

  4. Yes, they seem to work together, I hope they work on Windows 2000 as well

  5. I think that this is not the problem, because a simple kernel redirect is enough, everything except the message about the lack of support for Vista and XP then works. By the way, for some reason applications that need the osver.ini file to work, or rather their installers are not able to create shortcuts, an error appears.

  6. that's what you get nowadays with pretty much any company there only in it for the money and profit (not the customer)

  7. Hi win32, magnificent work on your extended kernel as always, thanks for that! I was wondering if you had any progress running Adobe Acrobat Reader DC application on Vista. Thanks.

  8. A wider assortment of 32 bit applications run, including up to Chromium ~107 and Electron applications such as Spotify (Discord's updater is buggy, apparently it's reliant on IE). Firefox goes up into the 90s. Chromium 110 x64 works. Chromium 111 x64 may work, with --no-sandbox and ChromiumFix=1 set in a osver.ini override for the application. OBS Studio 29 works, Calibre is fixed and PCSX2 1.7.3195 QT6 works, but later versions have issues. And Premiere Pro 2019 working now, which I did not expect. There are two known issues; Chromium's access to audio devices is broken. The cause was discovered and it has been fixed, but I am waiting on a fix for the second issue to include it in an update. There is an issue with userenv.dll which breaks audio on various systems. As the updates to userenv.dll are only needed for Chromium 110+, you can temporarily replace it with the original version to restore sound if it has been lost.

  9. @D.Draker Please do not quote me again ever. I have come to realize that WinClient5270 was very wise, and my New Years resolution is to forget about the problems of using Windows Vista in 2022. All forums (not just this one) are now dominated by people who are either rude or mentally ill (it is hard to be certain when they barely know English). My Vista hardware sits in a closet awaiting a refurbishment that it will probably never get, since running Vista no longer strikes me as a good idea. Happy New Year!

  10. Here, you will find a list of software compatible with Windows Vista, after installing the new extended kernel by Win32. As this project is very new, this list will remain quite short for the time being. List: BeamNG.Drive 0.16 and later Chromium versions 53-73 beta (later versions currently do not work) Firefox "classic" versions 53-56 Firefox Quantum version 57 and later GIMP 2.10.18 Google Earth 7.3.3 and later Interlink Mail client Logitech Gaming Software 9.02 Opera 44 (later versions currently do not work) Palemoon 28.x Rocket League Thunderbird versions 53 and later Waterfox Classic Waterfox Current Whatsapp I will continue to update this list as more software is made compatible. Feel free to contribute your own additions in the form of a reply to the topic, and I will add them ASAP.

  12. I'm planning to build a last rig for XP (4th gen intel) but I 'm not sure it's worthwhile to go that route. I first need to try all of my software utilities (hundreds) with a lightweight W11 to see what they look like, that's a deal breaker to me coz I can't stand these icon's plain colorway I neither updated some programs to the last version for the same reason because they look awuful to my eyes

  13. Some updates of RealityRipple's extensions just mark the extension as confirmed working with up to the latest official milestone version of Pale Moon and dropping the older milestone versions at the same time, causing them to not install on those versions. GeoFlag at least appears technically compatible with Firefox 52 - 56 and Pale Moon 28+, so I have the following targetApplication entries in its install.rdf: <em:targetApplication> <Description> <em:id>{8de7fcbb-c55c-4fbe-bfc5-fc555c87dbc4}</em:id> <em:minVersion>28.0.0</em:minVersion> <em:maxVersion>32.*</em:maxVersion> </Description> </em:targetApplication> <em:targetApplication> <Description> <em:id>{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}</em:id> <em:minVersion>52.0.0</em:minVersion> <em:maxVersion>56.*</em:maxVersion> </Description> </em:targetApplication> The following isn't needed with above modifications either:

  16. I wanted to ensure it was a browser shortcoming when struggling on Yahoo mail so I tested the rebuild 3 with W7 (rebuild 7 doesn't work) and I didn't notice any significant difference. I can't tell if the @NotHereToPlayGames browser is ''severely outdated'' because Yahoo released the newer UI long before chrome 86 came to light on the other hand Gmail works perfect and fast enough (even with sluggish Firefox forks) so in my opinion Yahoo mail has actually not been well optimized

  17. Unsure if you intended to post this in the Humming Owl thread or not - I only tested your URL in my v13.5 build 1030. Unsure if Humming Owl disables WebGL or not. (edit - or are you using an extension to block WebGL?) But again, this web site WORKS in v13.5 build 1030 if you enable WebGL. 18. A modified Build of Blender 3.4.1 works as well, though it does crash a lot. Depending on if you use NVidia Drivers for 7 which were modified for Vista, it might cause it to crash at startup.

  21. Of course, I can say that. And I do it once more. Your assumption is wrong. I used Avast Antivirus, Avast Internet Security and Avast Premier more than 10 years. I know all about them. And I tried it on different hardware. Avast was abandoned by me due to my posted experiences months ago. Anyway! It's all water under the bridge. I use other, better and much lighter security software instead as I already wrote in this thread. What you are doing here is more of a body snatching kind of thing. Please, stop reviving old comments of mine! Or better, stop quoting me in general if possible! Thanks for that in advance!

  25. I don't know what the heck happened yesterday, but Windows prints today, though I rebooted at least two times yesterday. And TBH, I forgot a lot of trouble with current printer was due to using extension cable, which I used in the past and took a while to pinpoint. Linux somehow had better time communicating using that cable.

  32. I do that too if I consider it self-explanatory or easy to look-up. You'd have to profile RDR2 on the system that has all dependencies to be able to see everything it loads. The picture shows static dependencies, but other libraries are loaded at runtime. There's footage on YouTube showing it running both in Vulkan and D3D12 mode, eg.: That D3D9 dependency is probably a leftover from older iteration of the engine or maybe they do intro cinematics with it? Latter seems unlikely as it's really old fashioned to use another rendering API for those, much older games from Rockstar did it though, think GTA III era GTAs. Your definition of "true" D3D12 game seems to be the kind that utilizes its exclusive features from feature level 12_2 and consequently requires newer GPU, eg. one of RTXs on NVIDIA side and the like. I wouldn't say other games with lesser requirements makes their usage of D3D12 any less real. Devs should have less work building upon existing D3D12 code should they decide to use new features in the future. They get to skip this - Porting from Direct3D 11 to Direct3D 12.

  33. Don't really care about market share. We don't need to organise the forum based on real world events. And also try not to make changes just for the sake of making changes. For a design standpoint, the primary portion of a forum index should reside within 1 screens worth of space on a standard system, and MS Software Products section fits into that space. If we had to add another section, such as if a Windows 12 comes out or something, then we will think about moving a section into a sub-section.

  34. I place my hand on a Bible and swear to God and everything Holy - for the LONGEST time, I assumed these both to be the SAME PERSON. I don't think that anymore, I admit (only one of these two is on my "ignore list"). But I agree, @Jaguarek62, the "always right" persona is nearly identical between these two. Of course, I also say that as a person whom my own father accuses me of always being right and I always return, "Apple didn't fall far from the tree?" or "Pot? Kettle?" and we chuckle and move on.

  37. Yeah, Windows 7 is still considered a major operating system right now. It may not be supported, but there are still a lot of computers out there on 7. Not as much as 10/11 in the personal world, but commonly businesses and Embedded devices especially. Doesn't top how many Linux powered devices there are though. Linux-based things rule every market except the personal desktop space.

  39. Reading discussions at other places it does seem to be on the list of regular maintenance tasks for lot (not all) of folks, it ranges from really often on a monthly basis (some of those report very dusty environment), 3 - 6 months, 6 months to a year, 1 - 3 years. Some apparently even replace CPU thermal paste often, first time I hear of that phenomenon, Intel's site says it do it every few years, last time I did it was about a decade ago when I replaced stock CPU cooler, paste still functions as far as I can see. I'm my own housekeeper. Yes, though I was going for the version without the huge fan since it seemed a bit of an overkill, but wasn't in stock where I was shopping and didn't feel like going for entirely different case.

  40. You mean upload? Then for users' convenience, here it is: https://mega.nz/#!Z0dE0CAA!oJhI3ZaBDOfkPKgR18lTkPEt3wllL5LxuqiGgl20x2U I tried again under XP and it tries to use IE for rendering as well. Then I ran it under Windows 7, where it actually used Chromium. When Windows 2000 is set to identify as Windows 7, the browser just crashes with a "new tab" dialog. I do hope that they don't force it to use IE on NT 5.x.

  41. I found another crash condition for Office 2007, with regards to OneNote. Pasting images into any notebook. So you'd have to use the hard-to-find OneNote 2003, which did not ship as part of any Office edition. But, as long as Word and Excel work, which they do, I'm sure that is all that really matters. I wish that I could stick to 2003 but I suddenly needed stuff like the ability to really manipulate my headers, insert pages (especially cover pages), and the integrated citation system.

  42. I just installed it on my main Windows 2000 workstation (extended kernel v3.0a) and I had many issues. I manually installed uBlock Origin v1.18.6 and it didn't work I noticed that it made connections to servers under these domains: -cloudflare.com -tencent.com -e10.net (eNom, LLC; maybe that one shouldn't be blocked) -163data.com.cn (China Telecom Group Corporation; state-owned) -akamaitechnologies.com (they also host some of M$' win10 telemetry servers if I remember correctly) Once I put them all in my hosts file the browser would crash on bootup and removing them had no effect. New Moon is still the best browser.

  43. A word of caution about HTML5test.com: Many of the points awarded by that site are for features that have privacy and/or security concerns: e.g., 15 points if your browser supports geolocation; 10 points for "service workers," a point for the "ping" attribute, etc. A very high score may not be the best news about your browser.

  44. I just installed it on Windows 2000 and it works great, aside from the fact it seems to render lots of Western-signed HTTPS certificates invalid. MSFN was also affected; click the hyperlink on the (far) left to proceed to the site. It also makes all these connections (and a few more); they seem to be American cloud servers. New Moon makes only like 5 connections with a page of MSFN open.

  45. My Kaby Lake HP bs-017ca ran somewhat slower and less stable (BSOD every 1.5-2 weeks) on Windows 7, and I want to stay in the Windows ecosystem, so a (heavily tweaked) Windows 10 will do. But I won't stand to torture my other machines because I still have a few gripes, a few more than I ever had with 7 or NT5. -Aunt's laptop (upgraded from win8) got stuck with full-screen start menu obscuring the desktop constantly and the settings app crashing 6/7 times. An upgrade from 1607 to 1809 fixed the crashes but not the start screen. -Whilst attempting to use Edge last summer, it would keep forgetting my history (though if M$ could too that would have been great) -When opening the Open-Shell start menu, the fade-in transition is very choppy sometimes, with the smoked-glass menu appearing through solid black.

  46. Thanks for testing Illustrator out for me. The problem with being unable to open (and save) files from within the program started with CS4 (it also affects InDesign, but Photoshop is fine). I'll take your advice and try with Dependency Walker and the new extended kernel. UPDATE: I ended up getting the same results as you, down to opening and saving. I'll use an older version under either win2k or 2003R2 because it seems like the bloat:functionality ratio went through the roof with newer Adobe software.

  47. What do you people make of this? Didn't think anyone would actually bother to comment, but the author of Rufus himself did. Is anyone here who uses Vista on a regular basis actually concerned of the potential security implications? At least for me, regardless of the OS I use, whether that mitigation is enabled or not, it doesn't make a difference to me, because nothing ever gets on my PC without my explicit permission. I haven't used anti-virus software in years. To me, that's snake oil that only serves to give gullible people a false sense of security and slow the computer down and being downright annoying by deleting software that I actually want to run. It even happened to me once that I was compiling a program from source and NOD32 deleted the freshly compiled .exe right away! I was compiling a freaking game engine at the time... Windows Defender is the very first thing that gets turned off after Windows install. So, since this is primarily for the few Vista fans on this forum and that I don't really like programming and only ever bother with it if something I'd like to use is horribly broken or otherwise find some inconvenience that I'm able to fix, what do you think? Would you rather have a version that's potentially more secure or is the current fine? Honestly, my Vista image dates back to 2013, so it's possible that the bug with controls losing Aero appearance doesn't even occur when on a later patch level, but knowing MS, when their product goes out of mainstream support, they don't usually do any interesting updates. I guess I could compile both versions. I personally prefer the one that looks right.
