There are a couple of old sticky threads by spacesurfer in the Windows Vista forum that may contain useful information (or else why are they still there?)2 points

I am not posting to ask a question: Only to repeat information that has been well known to some of us for years. There was recently much discussion (often bordering on hysteria) about Microsoft abandoning SHA-1 in favor of SHA-2, particularly in the Windows XP forum. There was also some discussion of old Windows updates related to SHA-2. I only want to clarify the situation with respect to Windows Vista here. Microsoft released KB2763674 for Windows Vista SP2 in January 2013. For those who are curious, there is still a Microsoft article about the update at this time. Those running Vista SP2 may want to check Installed Updates to confirm that they have this update (before “upgrading” to Windows build 6.0.6003). If not, then you are in luck because the Download Center links in the above-mentioned article are still good! (Not even the service packs for Windows Vista have Download Center links anymore, although they can of course still be found in the Catalog.) To make it easy for you, here they are: 32-bit 64-bit The continued existence of those Download Center links could be just an oversight that M$ might correct at any time, so here is a Catalog link for KB2763674. If all else fails, there are also x64 and x86 .cab files in greenhillmaniac’s repository (check the General folder). I am sure that equivalent updates were released for other versions of Windows, but there would be no point in discussing those here. Of course updates for Windows Server 2008 SP2 can generally be installed on Vista SP2. The main thread about that has long been Server 2008 Updates on Windows Vista. While the update mentioned above should be sufficient to run third-party applications with SHA-2 signatures, Server 2008 received updates to allow installation of Microsoft updates with SHA-2 signatures in 2019. I answered a question about which updates to install for that purpose in a July 2020 post. You would need to do that if you wish to install all possible security updates for Server 2008 SP2, since they have been signed with sha256 exclusively since the summer of 2019, or if you wish to install antispyware definitions for Windows Defender.1 point

Hey there, everyone! I'm just a person who likes old OSes more than the modern ones, because they are easy to use and seem so fun. I actually joined back in 2019... but I only kept reading topics, so when I came back again, I then saw even more great topics being made. My name is Mina. I hope this forum becomes even more better with keeping up 98 and above (until Vista) having more possibility of running newer software. Welcome.1 point

It's not that simple as it may seem . This should bother you much more . Have you ever heard about IPT ? It's your unique ID that is generated by all Intel (maybe AMD too) CPUs. I'm not sure about the exact year of it's implementation , but a quick searh reveals that it was there in 2014 already. From Intel's wevsite: "Intel Identity Protection Technology is a built-in security token technology that helps a hardware-based proof of a unique user’s PC to websites, financial institutions, and network services; " . Take this one , for example . It's more than a 6 y.o. old basic/cheap mobile CPU from 2015 and it has this "technology" built in. https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/89611/intel-pentium-processor-4405u-2m-cache-2-10-ghz.html It was available in earlier models too , starting from 2013-2014 (at least). Found this one article from 2014 : "this token is built right into the device hardware, it is much more convenient " , funny , huh ? "convenient" for them , right. https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/intel-identity-protection-technology/ Outright privacy invasion , a very powerful hardware based tracking tool! But no info anywhere ! Amazing.1 point

Firefox’s requirement for certain Windows 7 file versions has been known to win32 since July 2020 and the installer you mention was a real achievement, but I wonder if it might affect media software that expects only Vista file versions.1 point

I'm seeing this "identifier" as USELESS. Here's why - isn't an "identifier" supposed to be able to IDENTIFY? Then why did I get 92.35% earlier this morning and now I'm at 91.87%? Easy, because OTHER PEOPLE are getting the same EXACT "identifier" as I am getting! Namely, "0FVVVV". And I got that "0FVVVV" in two different browser (BNav and 360Chrome).1 point

Their script starts its "job" once you start typing the reCAPTCHA in the input box... On FirefoxESR 52.9.1, they successfully detected an association with the Telegram desktop app (i.e. Fx can handle ".tg" links...); FWIW, I had only tested the app some years ago, currently it doesn't even support Vista (or XP) ...1 point

No, there is not any such limitation for Vista+. There is the need of a "boot" (what the MS guys call "system") volume, i.e. an active, primary partition (which normally would get a C: drive letter) where the boot files must reside (i.e. namely) NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI for XP and BOOTMGR and \boot\BCD for Vista, then you can have (say) XP on another volume, let's say D: and Vista in yet another volume, let's say E: (or viceversa, XP on E: and Vista on D:) these other volumes can be either primary partitions or .logical voluems inside extended As an example, I have (or have had) machines with DOS on C: (this is non-negotiable) Windows 98 on D: (and yes, it is possible, though complex to install it this way), NT or 2K or XP on H: and Vista or 7 on G:. jaclaz1 point

Thanks Den, at least that confirms it! I've not been a moderator for very long though, and I thought I could see the flags before I became one. Was this done when the forum software was updated some months ago? A strange decision IMHO when I'm pretty sure that everyone had been able to see the flags for years. Why would xper not want people to see them any more? Perhaps I'll ask him!1 point

Hi dencorso ; I suppose a "High Court Appeal" is out of the question then, am I right? Best regards from Greece (wait; you, too, can see the flags ... ) !1 point

or set wsus server to anything non existing on gpo. For example stupid.update.stop as wsus server name. It will error out as no connection. I used it once to stop updates on win10 to one client (was required not to update automatically at any case while still have networking)1 point

related mozilla upstream PR: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1707590 don't know if MCP will import it or not. In contrast, AVIF is still not adapted by mozilla(, yet): https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14438631 point

But doesn't security.csp.enable;false mean that for the sake of just blocking CSP reports, the whole CSP browser feature is being turned off? Having a read of the Content Security Policy (CSP) documentation, I think CSP is something we should keep enabled ; of course, I am not a security authority like yourself , so please share some extra knowledge on this... Kindest regards, keep safe and healthy (Saturday I'll get my first anti-Covid19 jab ) !1 point

This depends solely on MCP (as I don't expect roytam1 to take this up on his own ), going by what is already known about them, they won't be jumping on that bandwagon very soon/if ever... Personally, I'm not that worried TBH, the article you linked to says:1 point

The switch is there for me on every browser I've tried, so maybe it is a moderators' only option at present. I think that's very odd if it is the case, and if the switch wasn't there I would expect the option to be enabled anyway. I'm sure I used to be able to see members' country flags before I was a moderator. Maybe it's something which has crept in with the new version of the forum software, but if so I suspect it's something that has been left switched off for general members by mistake. Until another moderator or supervisor confirms this by saying they can see the flags and have the switch option I don't know what else to say!1 point

Do you actually mean FirefoxESR 68 (I've never known a 64esr version to have existed; 60esr -> 68esr -> 78esr -> 91esr) ?1 point

Curiouser and curiouser! I can't image why that setting would only be available for mods! Perhaps @dencorso or @Tripredacus can shed some light here?1 point

Sorry Dave, haven't seen the "flags" myself since many moons ago... They are certainly MIA on latest Serpent 52: I accept further discussing this here is OT ; there exists a now LOCKED thread I started in Feb 2020 in the Site & Forum Issues sub-forum where I pointed out last January that the flags had again vanished for good, but, as said, the thread was locked by a mod... If the flags are there for you (BTW, on which browser?) and you know of a way to bring them back for the rest of us, please come forth... Cheers1 point

I've gone with the Kingston HyperX Fury - good reviews over the years since it was introduced and although a little more than I wanted to pay I have 2 x 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 modules (in MB matching blue ) winging their way to me as I write this. Found this later so it didn't influence my decision but quite amusing if you're in the right frame of mind.1 point
