My Browser Builds (Part 3)

I have tried that plugin to filter out unwanted sites and the results on Deviantart.com have been very disappointing so far- except for one thing. This was with Basilisk 52 SSE and Firefox 45 ESR SSE.

I do not know what "static.parastorage.com" is used for, but it is absolutely the problem. You cannot filter out any aspect of it, and if you simply exclude it you cannot Reply, Comment, Journal, or Literature- which means you're better off using Palemoon 27. That server ONLY seems to do something once you are logged in, which would explain why things seem to work better with offline testing.

I cannot test one aspect because when you scroll down it tries to scroll back up- endlessly.

When that server is involved it makes everything hopelessly slow on old hardware.

UPDATE: If you could leave out the static.parastorage.com's CSS files it loads much faster but it scrolls back up by itself. You can block this site, but blocking its elements will cause trouble. If not for the self-scrolling it would work.

The way I see it there are two options, assuming I can ever get started on this sort of thing:

1) Cook up a non-proxy browser that acts like Opera Mini able to handle these things- not easy I'd imagine.

2) Modify Palemoon 27 juuuussssst enough to deal with Deviantart.

Every once in a while I get a page added at the bottom of the Bookmarks menu in Pale Moon. Usually a blank tab but sometimes a page I've visited. How can this happen? I can't do it on purpose because clicking on the Star adds it to Unsorted category.

The method for creating a bookmark is too convoluted. A better system would be to invoke a command in a bookmarks directory, which would pop up a dialog with its name, address and comment and place the bookmark in that folder without opening the huge Library. I would never go there to look through Unsorted bookmarks. Also there appears to be no way to sort them alphabetically without dragging each item. I occasionally drag items by accident, and would prefer a static, alphabetic menu as in normal software or Opera.

The usual way to sort bookmarks on Mozilla browsers is to right click on the bookmarks' folder, and select "Sort by Name".
It can't be done in the list of bookmarks itself, and A>Z is the only sort option.

I think he's saying that he didn't add the bookmark, that it added itself and that it landed at the bottom of the list.

Sounds like a javascript shenanigan to me - are you running NoScript or just allowing javascript willy-nilly?

But there'd definitely be some nice irony in getting this XP-specific fix into the current Firefox code via their stand-alone cubeb lib, after they took great care to remove all traces of XP from their main tree!

Don't jinx it! but it did happen as UXP#1806, I decided to skip it for the time being since I have no time to deal with it right now.

I see now that I can sort when right-clicking on a folder. I tried right-clicking on one of the links inside as if it was the Windows Start menu, and didn't find the option there. No, I don't use NoScript. When a New Tab is added, it doesn't have a script in it.

I have tried Deviantart again with Basilisk 52, this time with Windows XP.  This library has wifi that DOES allow use of XP.

Still slow, but well within tolerable levels. There is no doubt that extension that filters out unwanted servers and aspects is a big help.

The problem is clearly that in Puppy Linux mode "heavy" websites that are very demanding- as well as demanding SWF files offline- causes trouble. However, while in XP mode the Deviantart problem is solved. The people here are actually doing something to prevent waste and more pollution by keeping older systems going, and I want to be one of them.

Someone here has suggested that the old laptop can in fact handle 512 MB RAM. I do not know if he is right, but if he is right then it will absolutely be a huge help. In fact, if it turns out that he is right and a laptop the manufacturer itself- Sony- is wrong and it can be boosted beyond the normal 256 MB limit then this website should have a listing of devices and their true upper limits. If this person is right then he must be given full credit for the idea.

Thank you all here.

I observed an oddity with bookmark sorting. Letter Y sorts between H and I. I can't explain it with any regional settings.

That is odd!
What language is the browser actually set up in?
:dubbio:

The only thing I could think of is Dutch.

In my language there's the "letter" 'ij' , which is pronounced as 'y'.

But the sorting in my Firefox nl version is like it should be ('y' between 'x' and 'z')...

The system locale is set to Germany. I don't know if any of it is read in by Firefox, which is quite independent. The browser is set to request pages in en-us. The letter Y seems crazy. Sometimes it is sorted above I, sometimes below, without an apparent logic. Other letters behave normally. Windows Explorer sorts normally.

It doesn't practically matter that much; I can drag a few bookmarks by hand.

As your browser GUI seems to be set to English, I can only assume that you have some bookmarks with non-English characters at the start of their names, which is causing them to apparently sort incorrectly.
What happens if you edit the affected bookmarks and change their names to English equivalents, do they sort correctly then?
I don't think that the system locale is relevant here.
:dubbio:
