I would honestly be surprised a little if ESR 115 doesn't support Windows 7/8/8.1, as that would go against their usual traditions.  Also, in case anyone is interested, below is the Windows Update log file for Windows 8.1 in its entirety, compressed into a 7z archive. Maybe it'll come handy to some of you...

NotHereToPlayGames (aka ArcticFoxie) has already expressed some interest in modifying newer Chinese browsers that still support Windows 7. (Support for XP has ended even in China now.)

Yes, .NET Framework 4.8 can be installed on the best Microsoft Windows version til date, aka Windows 8.0.

yes, it's faster than 8.1. Video memory pagination "improvements" added to WDDM starting with 8.1, made the UI more laggy. 

So there are 5 types of LAG which can be attributed to those added functionalities + standby memory problems. each new WDDM version is always worst than the previous:

1) 8.1: WDDM 1.3 

2) from 10240 (LTSB 2015|1507|TH1) to 10586(1511|TH2): WDDM 2.0 

3) 14393 (LTSB 2016|1607|RS1): WDDM 2.1

4) All other Windows 10 versions starting with 1703|RS2 (not sure if it's an OS, a website, a videogame...): 2.X

you have "HwSchMode" (aka GPU scheduling) in between...

5) Windows 11: WDDM 3.0

Sure modern hardware can take advantage of these newer functionalities, but we need it?

You can play turning on and off things like: dpi, gpu, telemetry, memory compression, control flow guard, security patches/vulnerabilities (spectre, meltdown), pagination, metro, explorer shell, ribbon... and you can have an acceptable experience at the end, except for WDDM and video memory pagination which also affects DWM. Lot of headache, right? and when you have all configured... et voilà:

Don't turn off your PC. This will take a while.

Your PC will restart several times to ensure your tweaked registry is all reverted so you get the 100% of lag again

So, long story short, all mobos with a GPU capable of WDDM drivers (any mobo starting with 2006 until now, or til 2016 so it's compatible with w8 and have wddm drivers), can have the best Windows experience running 8.0 and the worst running something >10. Of course, installing 10 on a HDD it's something like using Windows 95 with a multi-core cpu, you can take benefit of the cores right?... and installing 8.0 on SSD, even on celeron or atom, for example, feels like having an Core i3 cpu...

Sorry for the offtopic too, just want to have more people sharing it's interest for w8.0 so we can share acknowledgment and improve it. There's a reason why it's the only MS OS which need less requirements than it's predecessors.

Interesting, right? The more I look at it, the more I think Luna looks older and Watercolor, from Whistler, newer like the 8-10 flat metro luna UI. 

Edit: just found Whistler 2250 theme is almost 99% the same as Windows 8.

What I can do this?

My computer with Q6600 (OC) 8GB RAM and SSD is very fast with this OS. It's the best!

to install .NET 4.8 on Win8.0 and their .net 4.8 updates, look in this thread from another forum and here too (need to be a member there to view links)

that is not the case as Mozilla recently decided to extend Win7/8.x support and the upcoming Firefox ESR 115 release WILL support those versions until late 2024.

not necessarily true for 8.1 w/out the bypass tool
it's not like with newer server 2012 rtm updates on win8.0; not quite the same as newer server 2012 r2 updates on win8.1
what has worked with win8.0 doesn't quite work the same with win8.1, Jody

yup. fails with "we couldn't complete the updates undoing changes" error message part way.
conducting my own tests with the Feb. 2023 & Mar. 2023 w8.1 embedded / server 2012 r2 updates, they fail to install
on normal win8.1 editions including win8.1 core/home edition, thus agreeing with Jaguarek62's assessment.

that's why that bypass tool is needed to fully install Feb. 2023 & newer updates for "client" Win8.1 edition OSes
(bypass not needed for win8.1 embedded industry edition yet as that one gets support until July 2023)
I know because I use a win8.1 core/home os on my father's old 2013 Toshiba satellite c55a laptop on a
backup hard drive

Be careful..  We're not supposed to mention that tool.  But it's good to know it's working.

I'm a tad spoiled over at Windows 8 Land.  Here I just download and install.  I have apparently two more updates coming my way.  I'm not sure if what is considered to be "unspoken" will work in my case beyond that, however, I was going to stop updating Windows after October's final patch.  I'll just keep updating Firefox ESR 115, and manually updating Windows Defender as long as possible.  After that, I'll retire Windows 8 at the close of 2024.

Thanks, I´ve removed the link. The laptop I´ve got Windows 8.1 on has a prehistoric SIS display adapter that Bsods on W10+, so I`m stuck. Luckly MS will be realeasing updates untill 2026 for Server 2012 R2...

not just for Server 2012 R2 but also for rtm Server 2012 (or as I call it "R0")

KB5028228 is the last rollup for 32bit Win8.1 and KB5028232 is the last rollup for 32bit Win8.0

gonna have to check whether or not KB5029295 rollup works on 64bit Win8.0

Right!  But I'll not partake in the ESU stuff.  I'll just run Windows 8 with the final October update, then I'll be really careful for a year.  After Firefox ESR 115 bites the dust, there will no longer be a currently supported browser to lean on, except maybe Supermium.  If MyPal 68 evolved into a working x64 browser, then maybe I'd have a case to remain with Windows 8 for longer, but I doubt it.

As of 2025, I have another box setup with Windows 10 LTSC 2019, that I'll migrate to.
