well bad news everyone.. from recent youtube videos I've watched recently (from early september) there has been reports that the server 2012 updates on have since been entirely blocked from installing on windows 8 and making then completely unusable anymore.. microsoft released somekind of past end of support update to patch the registry function that allowed this so they can't run anymore

I am sure someone will figure some other way to get the updates ported sooner or later. I wouldn't worry too much

Now interestingly, Windows Defender has started "updating again.  For the last year or so, I've been downloading and manually running definition updates.  Now the update button in Windows Defender actually works again!

I have re-enabled the Task Scheduler for Windows Defender once again.  I do wonder just how long ago it started working again.

Does anyone know how to patch Uxtheme.dll to be able to use custom themes with the latest Server 2012 updates?

Even the latest UltraUXThemePatcher is not compatible with it anymore (but is compatible with Server 2012 R2 latest updates)

So does that include updates that I already had downloaded PRIOR to October 2023?  Will those still work?

I was taking a gander at the DM Windows 8 Forums here:

https://www.eightforums.com/

There is NO mention of any usability extensions such as using browsers like r3dFox, Supermium, Server 2012 updates, or anything.  I actually asked, "Do ANY of you actually run Windows 8?"  After all, it IS a Windows 8 forum.

Go Figure!

The first Server 2012 ESU update was released in November 2023 so Monthly Rollups or security-only updates released before that can still be applied to Windows 8.0

OK then.  I knew that already.  I just care that freely available Server 2012 Updates from the Microsoft Catalog can be installed.

Well 2 months ago I had a Windows 8.0 VM and was able to install the November 2024 Monthly Rollup and .NET Framework updates just fine. Have not tested beyond that.

Note that I was using some kind of *ahem* bypass *ahem*. I did this for testing purposes. The ESU updates are updates which corporations and/or universities pay for,

of course Microsoft just won't allow to install those normally for everybody else. Even on Server 2012 it won't work without valid ESU licenses.

Some kind of hack or bypass is required. Without it the updates will seem to install fine at first but at some point it will throw an error message that the changes are being reverted.

Just tested it in a Virtual Machine and manually installing the Server 2012 Updates up until October 2023 on Windows 8.0

without registry modifications to the Windows edition and without going through Windows Update still works fine !
