Unattended windows 8 sever installation.

Windows Live Movie Maker can do that too! Its probably not the best program, but it might already be on your computer and be good enough for the task.

I use the start menu often. I don't typically use desktop icons, except for programs in which I need to have a clean desktop or minimized windows to use. For example, RDP shortcuts or games that launch into a shell mode. While I do have some things in the taskbar (apps that are not in the start menu) I use the Start Menu for everything.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/07/02/microsoft_research_pc_hardware_crashes/ What is this supposed to mean exactly? Seems to me that this is just a jab at Windows 8 using previous OS data, but I wouldn't be surprised if Windows 8 would BSOD if you overclocked. What about underclocking?

My thoughts on using a different modem not provided by the ISP is mixed. I don't have an opinion on the matter. I am sure there are good ones out there, but its not something I have experience with. But, it is interesting that you are also having problems when connecting via ethernet. Right there would be enough for me to replace the modem/router. Since you said you previously had problems with it wireless, maybe you can call your ISP and complain how it doesn't work wired. Presuming you didn't buy it, maybe they can replace it again.

svchost.exe accessing microsoft exchange server without permission
Tripredacus replied to newprouser's topic in Windows 7
What are you using to know that svchost.exe is downloading data from Exchange? -
Tripredacus, This question may be OT, but what you wrote above caught my eye because I've been toying with the idea of switching to Linux if Microsoft persists in foisting Metro on users beyond Windows 8. The question has to do with the relative security of Windows vs. Linux. Linux advocates like to say that their favorite OS is much more secure than Windows. Is that true, or just propaganda? Or perhaps "mainly true vs. mainly propaganda"? Seems to me that if the security problems attributed to Windows are actually the result of bad habits by users (as you suggested in the quote above), then maybe PC security wouldn't really improve even if there were a mass switch over to Linux. What do you tbhink? --JorgeA Relating to this point, Windows 8 more secure than Windows 7? http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/06/21/win8_security/ My first answer would be NO. People are going to figure out Metro and how to bust through it. And my response to this: Of course, because no one is going to buy it!

What gives? Why single out Vista RTM individually from SP1+? It's modern...ish. There must be something changed with SP1. We all know that SP1 works a whole lot better than RTM.

Hmmm... greeting the mods first... not planning anything devious are you?
-
Well first I would hook up something to it via Ethernet and verify that it works properly like that. If this is the case, you can probably just get your router/modem to act as a bridge. It may have a mode specifically for that, or you might be able to just turn off wireless and DHCP on it. Then you can get a regular wireless router and hook it up to that. If you end up buying a wireless router, definately do some research on it first, since you might end up having problems just like this with a cheap product. For example, all my experiences I have shared here, none include using a router with built in modem.
-
Does it behave the same in the forum index as well as the Frontpage? And what exactly do you mean by "broken". What is the expected behaviour?
-
Does your current router connect directly to the ISP (aka has a modem in it) or does it connect to a separate modem device? If it isn't the modem itself, I doubt your ISP would care. BUT if your ISP gave you that router, you should definately keep it and not throw it out/sell it etc.

Register DLL in offline Windows?
Tripredacus replied to marcusj0015's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
DISM only supports .cab and .msu files for injection. But what about deploy OS into Audit Mode, install all your files they way you want, then sysprep /generalize and capture the image? -
Keyboard volume control, moving to different sound card?
Tripredacus replied to Basil's topic in Windows XP
From what I understand, XP doesn't really support multiple sound cards anyways. I had set up a PC with multiple sound cards once (for a total of 4) but it wasn't possible using XP32. I was only able to do it with XP 64bit. This was before Vista came out, so I don't know about newer OSes. Even so I got it to work, neither Microsoft, Realtek or Creative supported such a configuration. -
This is totally wrong. This isn't the same as previous versions of Windows Upgrade Version, which is cheaper than buying the full OS. The cheapest one was when MS did this for people buying XP prior to Vista RTM, where people got a little card/voucher for a FREE upgrade. So that one takes the cake.

Well if you turn DHCP on and set to automatically get IP and DNS info, you will have those settings! That's what I've done in the past. Then just change it all back and static those settings.

Register DLL in offline Windows?

You can manually copy those into the image, but they can't be injected. Does your image already have an answer file in it? -

What file format are they in? -
I wanted to mention that Event Viewer in Windows 8 is about the same speed as Windows 7 (slow) but is a lot faster in Server 2012 from what I can tell.

Windows 7 x86 Networking Problems
Tripredacus replied to danon1337's topic in Networks and the Internet
Ok so you can already see files from one PC to the other? Can each computer see each other in the Network window? For RDP, you should have created a user account (with password) to use for the connection. This account should be added into the "Remote Desktop Users" group. You could also use the same account used to access file shares. BUT it may be required to know whether you have Professional, Home Premium or another version of Windows 7. -
I don't think the master browser would have anything to do with it. But looking at your log file (I noticed this before) You can see the "rekeying" process, then it just says Link Up. Do you always lose your connection after the rekeying? If you can go back and find one rekeying to see if there is a LinkUp ~5 minutes later... Other ideas that may not be related, but is uPnP enabled on the router? I am wondering how your computer would work using a different router... even at a different location (house/business/school)... But I expect that just getting a better router might be easier.

Windows 7 x86 Networking Problems
Tripredacus replied to danon1337's topic in Networks and the Internet
You must be doing something wrong... So what kind of network do you have here? Are they both ethernet? wireless? mixed? Need some details! -
There is a reason for this! Net /time is deprecated, which would explain why the old version still works. Looks like you need to the use Windows time service now. But that is a great error!
