  1. I'm only wondering because if I replace both drives, going from IDE to SATA, Windows could potentially change the drive letters couldn't it? Even if I did clone the IDE drive to SATA and everything would be the same, Windows still would know it was a new disk and enumerate it that first time...
  2. Recently gave one (two?) up to recycle for $5USD each. And a 386.Some people end up all nostalgia and want to go back. There's just something about using old software on small CRT monitors with less colors, or maybe a purple blob in the corner of your screen. DOS4GW errors, and taking an hour to install something from your 2X CD drive.
  3. Well we aren't so bad yet on the game system front. I do not want to be all doom and gloom regarding how people just expect their new thng to stop working in 10 years because the server will get pulled. If the product is successful enough, their devs can certainly make it so you can keep using it if you want. And the computer thing in business, this is largely due to companies still not understanding how to be using computers. By that I mean that people who are not involved in using the products, or who are not technically inclined are the ones who make the decisions. They often wait until the last possible moment to upgrade and always spend large amounts of time and money to make things work on the new platform. Most computer people would tell you that you should be looking at the new technology right away and plan for a transitional period. Do you know how many companies are still using extremely old databases that they just can't justify the costs involved with upgrading them? In the health care industry, many of the (old) mainstay companies still need to use terminal emulators because their customer database is in a 20+ year old mainframe system. I worked with one company awhile back that had to go to XP in 2004 (They were still using NT4 Workstation) and the biggest problem they were faces with was none of the terminal emulators they had access to worked with Windows XP! But maybe these companies are in the same mindset we are in, we are "old thinking" and go by the idea that if it works, why change it? Well the world is changing around us.... As far as the USB thing, I think at the time Firewire was still a popular new thing it was only really competing with USB 1.1. We already know that Firewire wasn't really something to use as an input device connection replacement because it was kind of a waste. USB was definately fine for that. I think USB 2.0 pretty much killed firewire... But they still make computers with Firewire ports so there must be some use for it today. Maybe what MY complaint about USB is.... Why do companies still need serial ports? Many companies that work in the POS channel still (absolutely) require hardware with serial connections. I understand that a lot of equipment in the field may be older and have serial connectors, but why hasn't USB replaced those devices yet?
  4. Welcome to the MSFN!
  5. Well don't I feel silly. That 6L020J1 is actually a 20GB drive... I know what happened and why I thought it was a 120GB. The 120GB drive was put in my Win98 PC. This 20GB drive is from when my old computer had XP on it. There is little I actually use on it anymore and could probably be removed as the only thing I use is portable. That leaves me with the 80GB drive which I can clone to the WD SATA drive I got today. So hopefully Windows won't re-arrange the drive letters on the clone since the 80GB has 2 partitions on it.
  6. Well I just got 2 other SATA HDDs that I could use to replace the two Maxtors. I'll have to figure out what is on those drives. If they are both my storage drives it would be great. Otherwise if they have a program on them, if I did a disk clone I could end up with different drive letters which would be a pain. I will look at getting a different video card as well. Oddly enough, the AC guy is stopping by today.
  7. In my "case", I don't think adding any extra fans will make any difference. It already has 5 internal fans, not counting the one on the CPU or video card. I am using the Antec P182 which is the same as this: http://www.antec.com/product.php?id=6 Except I got the gunmetal one and not the one with the stainless steel outsides. A flash demo of the cooling paths can be seen here: http://www.antec.com/demo/p182/p182_flash.html We are getting a heat wave this week and it started yesterday. For us, anyways, 90 degrees F is like the rare upper temperature limit we ever experience. And having a lake nearby, we also get some high humidity. Yesterday we had about 90% humidity. I would imagine that humidity effects computers as well? And no, there is no air conditioning! Maybe someday I can get it... we'll have to see how much it costs.
  8. Another request. Can you disable the showing of search bots in the "users are reading this topic" portion below a thread? I know it is an important thing for you (admin) to be able to see what search bots are visiting the forum, but I doubt it has much use for the regular users.
  9. Not going to bring politics into this, but this was tweeted in February... titled "I spy" https://twitter.com/BarackObama/status/302560295958749184 How strange, because "I spy" something that looks like Windows 8. Is Windows 8 an operating system for children?
  10. The background color/image of the search field matches the currently selected color scheme. It might be helpful if it were set to an opposite color (white vs dark schemes) so that people know where it is. It does not immediately stand out that there is a search field up there.
  11. I know that "hot" is subjective, I certainly don't feel hot, warm maybe. Its not intolerable. But we have to understand that our computers may be less tolerable to temperatures as we are. Here I was, sitting down to a relaxing game of Civ 5 when my screen goes black. Somewhere, in the background of ALT-TABs lies some message relating to the video driver having a problem. I sat thinking... well it is kinda warm today, I don't think I feel up to playing anything that requires more thought. Then I realise, well, maybe my computer is hot too? So I decide to take a break, while the words of a complete stranger from a parking lot once told me echoes in my head:
  12. Game forum has a different icon! (Sorry, I'm easily amused)

  13. There is a problem with the post editor when you type some stuff. Then you press "Enter" (or Return for you oldies) and then put in manual IMG tagged content. While the hard return appears in the editor before posting and while editing the post, it isn't respected on the actual post. Sometimes I need to do 2 or 3 extra "Enter" between the content and the image. Proof in the test forum. EDIT: also, when clicking the number of topic followers up top, I can't see the users. I know I should be able to see the users that follow the topic because it has that function on reboot.
  14. Hey, you can change some color of the forum. Way at the top of the page is a paint brush where you can change the color!
  15. I know it is something a user probably doesn't care about... But I think it would be nice if the link to the forum rules were up top someplace. It took me forever to realise where the link was... WAAAY at the bottom. Otherwise, I think it looks pretty cool so far. Especially since the design is different than other boards of this version I frequent.
  16. I am certain there is some language barrier issue here, but this made me giggle. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/16da0a17-e723-492a-9caf-b565ea3262f8/i-got-error
  17. You may have noticed that your avatar has changed or reverted to the "blank person" picture when posting in the forum. This version of IPB puts your Profile Picture (the one that shows up in your Profile) as your avatar, unlike previous versions. So you would need to change your profile picture to change your avatar. And those of you who have an animated GIF as your profile picture, better remove that...
  18. If you run /GET-PACKAGES, does that one you can't remove show up in the list?
  19. Not when you're playing quake 3 arena and it pops up when you're trying to get some frags done The Game issue has already been discussed many times on here, that's why I made a Toggle Aero with my installer so you can quickly toggle off aero when going to "Game mode" then toggle aero back on when done...DP That would make more sense. Why would you want Aero enabled if you can't even see it?
  20. Here was my post that was gobbled up the other day. Apple found guilty of eBook price fixing! http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/10/4510338/apple-found-guilty-of-ebook-price-fixing
  21. Well I can't quote apparently... And my editor bar is unusable. I am fairly certain (cannot be proved, opinion) that the "new" forum version is tested against their previous version in upgrading. And NOT tested on forums that have been through multiple upgrades, or in some cases, forums that migrated between board softwares. I think that is where some of the problem comes from when board upgrades are done and not everything works out, especially codeboxes. Also: It appears you can paste pictures into your post, I did by accident. This picture here, is NOT pasted (its on Photobucket) to show you how the Quick Reply toolbar is, well, empty. @Charlotte: I always expected many users would be "shocked" by what this IPB version looks like. It is a lot different. But believe it or not, MSFN is way behind on getting this version and I have been using it on other boards for quite some time. Reboot is an exception as they do it "strangely" compared to the other sites. BUT I do know that it is possible to use the old skin with the new board... I know a site that did it although they said it wasn't easy and ended up not being 100% functional (I think they got lazy actually). EDIT: Quick Reply looks normal now (but ugly) so I think sometimes it just doesn't load all the way?
  22. I moderated this content already!

      Me, too, you're not alone...

  23. From what I understand, HKCR is just a "viewing point" of keys kept in other places, including HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes. I think you should try working in the actual location in HKLM instead. But as for why you get a permission error, maybe the ownership of the key needs to be changed.
  24. and the corresponding login page does what it is supposed to do (logging on): jaclaz Its interesting that you bring this up. For years (as probably with most people) I was interested in wallpapers, icons, screensavers, etc but as time went on I stopped bothering with these things. When I am using my computer, I rarely see my wallpaper. The exception is in the morning on the multi-monitor setup before I get my apps up. So what use is a wallpaper? I don't change it at home anymore. Icons went away for me a long time ago. It was the combination of two things. The first being that I was informed that having stuff on your desktop was actually bad for performance. The second was once I could put shortcuts to often used things on the Taskbar and much later when Windows 7 (I never really used Vista) had the Start Menu show the top 10 most used programs. Now I never go to the desktop except for rare occassions when I need to format a USB key, since that is where I have that program. And screen savers are a similar thing. The screen saver comes on when you are not using the computer and its probably because you are not near it. You wouldn't be there to see your screen saver since you'd be busy doing something else most of the time. Even the case of Shiva, who others have nicknamed "The Drugs Computer" because of its screen saver ended up just being a distraction you can see from the corner of your eye if you are doing something else in the room. Of course I would totally flip around on this subject if they include After Dark in Windows 8.1.
