  1. The important question is: Do you have a "$OEM$\$1\Drivers" folder in your CD, and have you checked whether it gets copied over to HD during text-mode setup?
  2. The method would be the same as any other adding you would do, I think. 1. Make an ISO image of the lindows CD on your HDD. 2. Extract the boot-sector from it using ultraiso. 3. Add the boot-sector as an option to your multi-boot. 4. Put all the files alongside your existing files in the root of the disc (laid-out in the same directory structure as originally on the lindows disc).
  3. BFV ????? what is that? [OK, I know what that means - that I cannot possibly be of any help in this matter, but still let me know]
  4. I'm not MCT, but yes - when I OC'd my PC too much, I did face an OS corruption. Everything else was fine (the BIOS/data/etc.), just the windows wouldn't boot.I over-clocked to a large extent (gradually, in steps of 1 MHz), and everything was working perfectly - but at some point it touched its limit of stability and my windows did not boot anymore (nor did Linux). Did a repair-mode from CD (you can also do a re-install) and was back in action.
  5. alternatively, run "msconfig" and choose the "BOOT.INI" tab.
  6. Nopes! The directX setup api method will need to be re-done with the new SDK. The old compiled exe (may or) may not work - and if it did work, there might be some problems - best thing to do would be to remake your exe.
  7. Do you mean the graphics card ? GeForce4 Ti4200 ? Yup! you will benefit from the upgrade to dx9c. But then, anyone with any graphics card is recommended to upgrade to this version, anyway.
  8. There's no switch available for the redist, you still have to get the OPK-type installer from the right place. Did you read this while downloading dX9C? More details here : DirectX 9.0c Redistributable for Software Developers - Multilingual Maybe one of you leet people has access to the VLC site? To post a public link for us all to download?

  10. Did you try searching in the forums? Look here for a thread similar to yours, where the answer has been found.
  11. Just wanted to point out (noticed only now) that the thread's title should actually read "How to make a boot disc with an OEM version" (its OEM, not OME). If the thread-creator reports about the first post to a moderator, probably they'll change the title to how it should be.
  12. Well there is a registry tweak which will give "high" priority to the process in the foreground, and give it as much memory/processor-time as it wants (sub-ordinating all other running processes). This can be done for the kernel alone, or for apps alone - so you got the place to start looking from, google is your friend. All the best.
  13. If you want to try e-mail alternatives, check out Eudora and IncrediMail for e-mail clients. Keep in mind they are both paid products, though. ThunderBird is a free, open-source e-mail client. Browser alternatives: 1. IE6 has become pretty good (fantastic, in fact) with XP's SP2 updates, so you could stay with it. 2. If it's the interface and pop-ups and memory usage that's bugging you, check out these IE-based browsing shells - Maxthon, Avant - and see if it interests you. 3. If you still want to switch, check out the daddy of firefox - Mozilla. 4. Some more alternative browsers worth considering are - Opera, and K-Meleon (kmeleon is based on the same HTML renderer as mozilla - gecko).
  14. @sfamonkey- Congratulations for being able to contribute how-tos into the forums . Its really nice of you to document how you did it and then share it with us all. I know I shall be looking out for your posts....
  15. I assume you want your CD to behave like the original ones - if the HDD already has an active partition, it should show the "Press any key to start setup........" text prompt, isn't it? All you need to do is copy "bootfix.bin" from the original CD (from which you make your PE) to your currently-using CD's I386 folder (or its BOOT folder, if you are using multi-boot).
  16. That could be because you did it in a non-IE browser . Carry out those steps exactly, and you will get your "View Source" option to be useless (until you delete the NOTEPAD folder from desktop). While, as of now there's no known exploit of this bug, in the future there could be. Possibly, with a malicious Jscript file being linked as the folder's icon or some such
  17. I don't mean to flame here, but:If you had read the same news at leisure (or seen the news at a more full-featured site) you would notice that the 'bugs' are not related to mozilla ff/TB as such. They just get impacted on the windows platform (like opera/all other) browsers did. The same vulnerability (I believe the latest 'critical' bug you mention is that of the "shell:" protocol handler) does not exist on other platforms the mozilla apps serve. The recent set of bugs 'discovered' in TB/ff are actually windows-related issues. The patch from mozilla is a workaround for a MS windows security flaw in protocol handling. Let's not get too technical here, instead, have a look - 1, 2, 3. The fact really is that deep integration of a browser/e-mail client will cause problems, and MS are doing quite a good job of fixing them - just that it is not good *ENOUGH* when there's better alternatives out there. As my post above says, IE6 (on XP SP2) has become very good, and is at a stable situation; OE is yet to reach that feature-complete and bug-free state. And before you brand me as a firefox fanboy, let me tell you that I actually am a loyal Opera user since 2 years. Also, that I use IE6 on all machines (other than my home PC). Just trying to even out the field and placing all the players where they deserve to stand.
  18. Doesn't really matter where you install it (just see that it satisfies minimum system requirements, that's all). But, yes - on a 'known to be good' system, VMware will function faster.
  19. Ha ha ha ha ha....... You really said it man!!! True, that sets me thinking as well (after you said it) about what he would say if he stumbled across this discussion?
  20. As v2.1 is beta, have you linked to the 2.0.0.1 sources somewhere (on your website)? OK, I'm not exactly forcing you, you don't need to provide me the source. I just got curious as to where the sources are now - your website mentioned something about sources linked to at the bottom of the page. Also, since your previous releases of WIHU had the sources as well in the ZIP download.
  21. @benjamin- It seems that this statement is not valid anymore (with all the executable-only releases of WIHU). Your project's homepage says: Where is the source?
  22. Yes, using a RAM disk is what will solve your problem. If I remember right, there is some facility to load WinPE/bartPE into a RAMdrive - you could search on the 911cd forums for more WinPE info. A hint to get you started - you need the "/inram" switch in the boot.ini to run PE in <load to RAM drive> mode.
  23. On Windows XP, using batch files for this purpose is unnecessary. MS have thought-fully provided customization for these requirements (such as the one you have). The method described below works regardless of which edition/language/channel of XP you have. Why does a thread like this keep popping-up so frequently, with predictable regularity? When such a simple method exists - you just have to *LEARN* to search. What you want is easily accomplished - visit this thread, all details are present there: create users (and more).
  24. @MCTI'm not saying you are wrong, but the fallacies of that method are many. 1. There are more keys which control the wallpaper than this alone (backupWP, HKLM settings, etc. 2. If applied/tested when already logged-in with explorer shell, the setting doesn't "stick". 3. Most importantly, the above regValue is a plain-text, which means you can't use system variables! (so if you installed WinXP onto D: drive, you'll end up with no wallpaper) 4. You have to apply it at cmdlines stage (which is pretty intimidating to learn and trouble-shoot for newbies), and if you do mistakenly run it from svcpack, you get a different set of problems. 5. We need an easy-to-do method, which will necessarily work the next time and every-time (should not be unpredictable). 6. We don't want to end up with a wallpaper-less desktop if the tweak doesn't work. Oh well, to each his own honey....... Use the method which is most comfortable to you.
  25. Despite what those things seem to suggest, and inspite of the fact that it is a pretty old tool (unsupported by MS, as always) - it works well enough. It's more likely that the tool will save your machine from problems, than create a few. As for the "regedit 4" signature, you know what to change that to. Besides, it was released back in the days when win98 was just a glint in the eyes of beta-testers - so the signature is self-explanatory/obvious. I can assure you I've been using this tool since a lot of time on win2k/xp and it hasn't created any problems.
