  1. Hello to all of you people there! What I wanted to know is this : How is an Athlon64 platform-based PC better than competing ones? Why would I choose it over other processors/Intel/etc. ? As a matter of fact, this question is for a demo by a friend, who wants to show that the Athlon64 is best. All that I could come up with (with my limited knowledge) was: 1. It has DEP (data execution prevention) extensions to prevent hacking/app-RAM-overruns. 2. Supports SSE2 *AND* 3D-Now! 2 instruction sets. 3. Runs at good speeds, and still is cool-quiet. 4. Is reasonably future-proof with 64-bit instructions. 5. Could be faster in future, if you use 64-bit OS. 6. It is good for graphics professionals (rendering is faster). 7. Good for gamers (pairing with a high-end graphics card will give superb dX9 quality/performance). 8. It's memory bandwidth is very demonstrably good - winXP would install within 11 minutes. I want to know how we could prove demonstrably that the Athlon-64 is superior (so that rules out technical discussions about chipset-architecture/caching-methods/Northbridge-SouthBridge integration/etc.). Please just stick to the topic, and no flaming/fanboy-ism. We don't need suggestions to use something else instead of AMD here. Where/how can I get worms/viruses that plague us with their memory-overrun exploits (like blaster, sasser, etc.) - for personal use only, he won't be affecting anyone else. How, if at all, is a 64-bit desktop a better deal for an end-user (who surfs WWW,makes documents, plays music, and shuts down his computer)? I need more demonstrative reasons (as the above post says), and quickly (within 1 or 2 days). I use the word 'demonstrative' (in the sense that, for example), I can show how faster memory access speed affects you by showing a super-fast OS-install. In the same way, DEP's usefulness can be proved by showing that the widely-cursed worms do not affect an Athlon64-based PC at all.
  2. Maybe not, bcos the user avatars are generated during OOBE (at first-boot), so your manipulation of the .bmp has to be *AFTER* that point in time.
  3. As a matter of fact, the same problem exists in FC1 as well - FC2 is less problematic on the whole, including the anaconda installer.
  4. There you go, the cat is out of the bag (diesel gave you the hint dudes, go to google). And FYI, it works exactly as is supposed to. Not had it fail at all. Suggesting not to do it is a matter of legality, of course.
  5. --tearing out hair in frustration-- Did you even *TRY* searching ? The absolute first result on searching threw up the one you want : Universal guide. Then, read the below threads carefully and understand it before doing anything. If you don't understand something, read it again. 1. Make an office 2k3 AIO 2. In-depth about space optimising
  6. One way is to modify the CD files, and burn a new CD which thinks of itself as a full (retail) version - instead of what it was (an upgrade CD will not allow clean install by itself, as already told above by Marshalus). That requires modifying just one file on the XP CD, but describing that here would be considered breaking rules. Try a google search for changing an upgrade CD into a retail. But if you want to stay within limits of legality, and not hack things - I guess you have to figure out a solution (which doesn't exist, it's impossible). @Mods If this post is illegal, delete it by all means - but I don't think supplying just this info could be interpreted as cracking
  7. It is good enough to be used by someone who knows to use it. If it was having crippling problems, it would never make it out of the doors of a Commercial linux distro maker. It's easy enough to install, just boot from CD1. It's possible to dual-boot it with winxp, just do the below steps: 1. Choose to make an independant primary partition (within the first 8.4 GB of your HD - in order to have it bootable) of approx. 512 MB. 2. Set that partition's mount point as "/boot". 3. Do the rest of the partitioning as you like. 4. At the 'boot-loader configuration' screen, tell it to install GRUB on your /boot partition (and *NOT* on your MBR - bcos a windows reinstall would overwrite the MBR). 5. Complete the installation, then use any partitioning tool (or the Fedora's CD1 'rescue' environment itself) to set active the primary partition that corresponds to your "/boot". It's not really any more difficult to setup than XP - if only you had setup XP from scratch, you'd know that. Factor in the point that Linux is basically meant to be used in server environments, and its ease-of-use is simply unbeatable (we're not gonna talk about mid-range windows server 2k/2k3 here, 'coz linux/unix operate at far superior situations of complexity). Asking if Fedora is good is naughty, because it can lead to flaming between fanboys - so let's leave it with the statement that each Linux Distribution is targeted for specific usage purposes - you can experiment and see which suits you/which you like. Nor do we want a Windows-Versus-Linux debate here. One suggestion I could possibly make with an unbiased mind: Use Fedora Core 2 if you could - the older (Core 1) version is known to be a bit bloated/flaky as compared to idealistic requirements. Also, Core 1 is not very different from RHL9 (its predecessor) - so why bother with older ones when a stable/well-featured version is present? Core 2 is freely downloadable as well : home.
  8. Yes, and it's already stale news - lots of us have been doing it since a year. Just do a search, in the forums.
  9. No! variables don't work as far as my experience has been.
  10. Does anyone an answer to this. Well I would say, that EasyBoot 5.0 here is better than either of them.
  11. Does anyone an answer to this. Well I would say, that EasyBoot 5.0 here is better than either of them.
  12. WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Now, THAT was what was needed all along. @neophyte, Thanks a million. That would be _exactly_ what I want. I would like it if file-associations were not tampered with by WMP as well.Well, an exciting episode comes to an end folks.
  13. Simply type control userpasswords2 into Start>Run and execute it. The power of the applet may not immediately be obvious, but have a good look at it and you will be able to do lots of things with it. An easier way: Download TweakUI 2.10 for WS2k3 from here (147 KB). Run it, and use these menu outlines- Tweak UI > Logon > Autologon > Enable. Does it help?
  14. And how did you do it? Could you please take the time to describe the solution, since I was looking to do the same.
  15. How to pre-set user icons: The icon (avatar) you see at the Welcome login screen, and in the new Start Menu is nothing but a bmp in "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures" with the relevant user's name. I have 2 users (named "Normal Usage" and "Vaidh") created by using oobeinfo.ini before doing this. So to set the avatar in unattended mode, here's what I do through a cmd from GUIrunonce: copy "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures\lift-off.bmp" to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Normal Usage.bmp" copy "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures\astronaut.bmp" to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Vaidh.bmp" (The above isn't a CMD script - deliberately. Customize the idea to your own needs.) I hope this helped somebody. If anyone among you (MSFN'ers) was trying to get this done, and now got it - do post here.
  16. Why not have a good read of the guide first ? Winzip needs to be installed manually, then copy away the installed folder (C:\Program Files\winzip) to where you want and place it on HD during unattended install through $Progs folder. Then, use the switches you are already using. @WwTIPPYwW Yes, the switches are correct. What happens is that the installed files are already in place, the switches simply register winzip as one of the installed apps, put an Add/Remove icon, and give the shell extensions.
  17. Is it only me, or have more of you people noticed that the SP2 setup doesn't bother (since RC2 v2149) about the existence of the $Docs folder in $OEM$ anymore? Nothing you keep in that folder copies to HD (to the location c:\Documents and Settings) at all.
  18. I would like to know what exactly the gpedit utility does when you enable the policy to "Don't execute first-time run" for WMP9 (on SP2). Would anyone using regmon *PLEASE* check-out and tell me ?
  19. Which is where you went wrong You just put the words between "" (inverted commas), and if such a match DID exist, it would show up immediately - no large lists here. As for coloring the exact search term, type your search term into the browser's "find" function, and press F3 upon loading each page. Now here's where my views come in. While the solution to the above issues may sound, and *IS* simple enough, you understand it (and how to use search) only after some time of being on the boards. So, I'd say, it would be worthy of the IPB dev-team's time to incorporate these features atleast for the next release (2.1 ?)
  20. To log individual 'echo' commands, here is an example (section taken from my batch file): ECHO Installed Programs were not registered >> %systemroot%\Temp\instTime.log To log entire runs of batch files (which is what you want), use mybat.bat >> c:\log.txt Note the double arrows, instead of single. That is needed because '>' will create/overwrite a file, but '>>' will create/add to a text file. This works in win98.
  21. @tim that's simply fantastic. You da' wizard, dude! Somebody? Well, make that lots of buddies
  22. An unbiased opinion is what you want? simple- windows has a stable core as well. And if you know enough on Linux as to keep it secure, and invest the same time to learn about WinNT5 (w2k and above) you'd keep it just as secure - with the added bonus that windows is easy to use for everyone, and also has access to a vast 3rd party library of apps. That linux is open-source does not matter here (for the task at hand). There's no need to respond to Apple here (atleast in terms of copying them - those methods should be abandoned as decade-old stale tactics). About the only difference between win/lin would be that linux is cheaper to support/implement (despite all of MS-sponsored TCO studies). The fact remains that linux is as good/bad as windows. So why change a core which has taken 20 years to perfect?
  23. Thanks for sharing a foggy memory with us GreenMachine (never mind, just joking around.....) Yup, I'm interested in knowing what you do. Do post back in detail on your 'clean' method. It's guaranteed that a lot of people on MSFN would be happy to know your technique.
  24. The reason you couldn't get it to work is because you did not have a good enough look at the link here : how to get TweakUI to install silent
  25. Use winrar to extract (at 2 levels) the TweakUI found here:Tweak UI 2.10 for SP1 Then use the solution described in previous post.
