  1. Any apps. running in the background that might interfere?
  2. Exactly, perhaps you already reached your card's limits. Pushing it further could damage your brand new very nice videocard. Be carefull!
  3. Google for "dvd-ram driver" and you will certainly find the formattingsoftware that you need. Contains documentation on the formats too. Not 100% sure that it will work on your drive but it is pretty universal. Good luck! And yes, just drag and drop.
  4. Well I have too the kernel update installed but I don't have any problems with installing this. The kernel update itself cannot be the cause. And housecall is working like it should again! Thanks a lot
  5. I don't know. DVD play with win98 and WMP9 is not possible anyway, and as I understand 98SEMP10 does not fix that. But I think you can still play your VCD's in WMP if you really want. Just open de aviseq.dat files on the CD in WMP9 and they will play. This is the only way it can be done with my WMP9 "out of the box".
  6. Or, also looking at your setup with SLI board, a second 6600? (if you can get the same). Offcourse a 7900gt is top now and 2x6600 cannot compete but the pricedifference is over the top in my budget.
  7. Did you check the settings of the drive. Is DMA enabled? Trying other media might help but in your case the speed is so low that that is unlikely. If you see low buffer levels during burning the cause might be in the source of the files you are burning. Perhaps a fragmented harddrive?
  8. Well, I guess that Microsoft choose not to implement certain functions for Win98se cause they need extra programming. That costs money and since nobody is buying win98 anymore it can't be earned back. Perhaps disappointing for us Win98se users but certainly not retarded! All you can do is to choose a nice colorfull skin. It will help your grey problem, that color is indeed ugly! I use the corporate skin. It's simple and nice blue
  9. That could be it. There's a quite recent topic about this, that's how I know . Look here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=72448 hope this wil help
  10. Perhaps the games have difficulties with your hardware mousecursor and want to use their own software cursor together with it. Some games have settings for this, or use Rivatuner or some other vidcard tweaker to disable/enable the hardware cursor to see what happens. You say you have no errors and a clean eventlog. Can you simply restart the games after chrashing, or you need to reboot ?
  11. If you lost your licence too you really need to buy a new one, sorry. Other ways are not legal. Next time, look for CD first and then delete everything...
  12. This is a known problem with build 300 and directX9.0. Upgrade to build 330 and it should be solved.
  13. What programs are you running in the background? I understand and agree with the previous posters that a application running in the background could cause this problem. However guessing what application this is will be quite difficult IMHO. Did you check for spyware or other nasty things that might interfere? Or good things like updating AV definitions? Thinking of this brings me to another question, are you connected to internet at all when games crash to desktop? If there is nothing special/nasty running than I would reinstall my videocard drivers first before looking anywhere else.
  14. Is the floppydrive recognized by the BIOS? Hooking up a floppy on a laptop is just pushing it inside, not much can go wrong there I think? There is no need for a driver or anything for a good ol' floppy so if you have a original Dell it should work. (I have some experience with Compaq that won't accept any floppydrive but a Compaq one...) Any chance to test the drive in another laptop to see if it works at all?
  15. Don't trust software, I am sure your BIOS is right.
  16. Whoops, are you sure? I am everything but a expert, but I know that networks can/should be functional with a firewall enabled. You mean you turned of all firewalls, also on the machine that is connected to internet? Be carefull with WIFI, as we speak my colleque is telling me that he can choose from 5 wifi networks on his laptop at home. Not one of the networks is his, he does not have a broadband connection....he's simply surfing on his neighbors broadband connections. Perhaps posting in the networking forum will give you some real expert answers.
  17. Encouraged by your result I tried again. First manually extracting the files in same folder and then doubleclicking OE911567 does work! Files are installed.
  18. The OE update won't install on my system (Win98SE+IE6.0sp1). Doubleclick on OE911567 starts but I get the error that a file can't be found. When pointing the installer to right file I get a copy error. This happens with all files. Rightclicking/install on kb911567 likewise. There's also a start.exe in the (exe) archive. So I try it I seems to do something, command screen flashes by, but that's all. edit: Checked file versions, nothing installed
  19. I case the 1gig ram is the problem also add to sytem.ini (368enh section). MaxPhysPage=40000 This will prevent Windows from using more than 999 Mb ram.
  20. Tried it and I must say, very very nice for free! And runs fine on my Radeon 9600pro with highest settings. No funny things in that but the game itself certainly is. Thanks a lot
  21. Yup, I recommend Nexus if I really want to recommend something. I have a 90mm that does 19db, I don't hear it at all. and is was very cheap. Papst is more expensive and uses a sleeve instead of ball-bearings. In theorie these don't live as long as ballbearings. I think that there a lot of good and silent fans in general. So I feel that the best advice I can give you is not to spent to much money on it. ( But I must say that a panaflo that does 35db probably sounds like a vacuumcleaner to me, horrible! That must be a CPU cooler, not a casefan) edit: Too late you have found something already, looks very nice and indeed very very silent
  22. But your other question, I did not even know that WMP refuses to play movies when you don't have a sound card . They don't cost a lot anymore, just buy one! In case you don't want that you can use your PC speaker. See here: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip23.htm I hope WMP will accept this. I don't know for sure.
  23. This is normal. With the 4in1 driver you don't install the IDE filterdriver. The windows default ( esdi_506.pdr) are used and that's why you only see type 47. If this works better and in your case it certainly does, it's best to keep it like this. Via claims that their own IDE filterdriver is faster. I tried it myself and it seemed a bit faster. But my Nero BurningRom didn't work anymore.... Problems with other software are also reported. I see that you have a DVD-RAM drive. I have a very similar one, the 4167B. I had problems with the DVD-ram software in combination with the VIA drivers (3.20B) The Via drivers will give you your drivenames but in a strange way. All your drives will be recognized as a SCSI device. Never those VIA drivers for me again!
  24. Hi there again, (late sorry) You could try this one overhere. It's a free one Dscaler forum But I must say that for me (Win98se) it's not working in any player. It seems that I cannot get the codec registered ok........maybe you are more lucky. I keep wondering why videolan does not work for you. Also the 600X800 maximum seems very strange to me. Unless the (onboard)videocard is very outdated and capable of nothing. It's not a shareware restriction in the software? I realize that it's not the solution you ask for but is trying MPC a option? This one has also internal DVD support , subtitles and menus included. If this and videolan won't work on your system than codecs are unlikely to be the cause of your problem. (but you do need them for WMP9/10, that's correct) edit: Whoopps, there is more: DVD for WMP10 from official microsoft site Perhaps is this one better, I can't test (win98se, no DVD in WMP)
  25. controlpanel-->display--settings-->advanced. (Win98SE, perhaps a bit different in XP) Here should be some settings for the videocard, depending on the drivers. Onboard or not is the same, it's still a videocard. DirectX installed OK? hope this helps offtopic: Why o why is it that when you are good with computers, and can always help yourself, you always run into problems when you work on the computer from the woman you want to impress the most?????
