  1. @yazee: thanks for contributing to this project. Maybe you could also help FDV and tommy with the new 2003 set?
  2. Sweet! I don't think others would have the same luck as you since most ISPs only validate the modem, not the client MACs. Thanks for sharing
  3. ...was referring to the Vista box. Also try this on the Vista box:
  4. Interesting hack. Depending on a few factors, you may have trouble with that configuration when you reboot. Would you mind experimenting a bit for me? Please disable your primary adapter so that the only route to the net is the adapter that is bound to VMWare...are you still able to access the net with your host (non-VM) machine? Is VMWare 'bridged' or "NATted" to the bound adapter? Did you change VMWare's MAC within the virtual machine or using VMWare's configuration utility? (operating system vs (and/or) VMWare)
  5. Congrats So what exactly do you have working? The VMWare-to-Adapter binding? Can you share with us how you did it? Also, I'm curious why you would need a setup like that. Did you need VMWare to have its own IP address? If so, why?
  6. So your modem/router is one of these? Which one? Not that any of them are likely to have the feature you want. Are you willing to buy another router? Or can you setup a machine to act as one? What kind of clients are on the network? Win2k? Linux?

    What does this mean?

When did you get the message? During setup? Playing a game? Something else? Have you tried rebuilding the VM? It will probably be easier/faster than chasing this error down :/
  8. In explorer, click 'tools' folder options', 'view', and tick 'show hidden files and folders. Hit 'F5' to refresh the target directory to ensure that the file(s) don't already exist. Check the properties of the file(s)...are they marked as 'system' or 'read-only'? Is anyone else on the network using the files?

Don't forget about the litestep option!

  11. What kind of device(s) is/are between the ISP and those 8 users? A router and/or modem of some sort? Tell us what is there and maybe we can cook something up
  12. Have you installed anything recently? Maybe some program is running under you admin account and wreaking havoc. Also check your account policies. Start/Admin/Local security settings/Account policies There are two folders in there...review them both for anything that looks odd.
  13. There are two different types of permissions to check: network and NTFS. Even if a file is shared to EVERYONE, NTFS permissions can trump that. Network: Right-click on the folder/file, go to sharing, and check the permissions in that window NTFS: Right-click on the folder/file, go to security, and check the permissions Either page can trump the other. ROT: the more strict rule wins.
  14. QoS can be hit-or-miss mostly because of vendor support. I've had fantastic success, and seen great impact, with Linksys routers.
  15. TommyP's INF is here.
  16. Was just working on a term paper and came across this cool paper from 3com. It is a bit dated, but still relevant. http://www.bergen.org/ATC/Course/InfoTech/Coolip/index.html And this one from Cisco: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/701/3.html
  17. Great suggestion! And if they don't have a good selection on this topic, go talk to the head librarian and inform them of the fact. I've seen librarians react to deficiencies like that and go buy some books...you can probably even suggest a few titles.
  18. Yeah but that is overkill for two dudes sharing a net link
  19. What hardware do you currently have? Just the DSL box? Or do you also have a home router? Most current home routers have decent QoS which you can use to set these ports to a low priority and minimize negative effects from torrents.
  20. Ahh...there are loads more options in the Virtual Network Editor than there are in the actual VMWare application. But I still don't see a way to do what you want. The only adapters available to configure in the software are adapters that are already enabled on the host OS. I have an adapter that is 'disabled' and could be used as you describe but the software doesn't 'see' it. I can't think of how this would really work. Once the adapter is enabled the VMWare virtual adapters would have to hijack the real adapter and prevent the OS from using it. Sharing it? Yeah...but hijacking it would require some software trickery. Certainly possible, though. What do you mean by this? Are you saying that the IP resolves to something like MAC1.MAC2.ISP.NET? The IP itself is assigned to (based on) the modem MAC.

    HFSLIP your codecs

Hopefully some other people will chime in here with their opinion. Either way, I intend to bugfix this pack and split it into separate packs. Maybe we can work on an ffdshow pack after that?
  22. They can't just use a hub or a switch? They need make a hard split in the bandwidth?
  23. Have you tried saving the configuration that you want and then rebooting the server? Shot in the dark, but it generally solves lots of weird MS problems
  24. You would think so by the title, but I don't see a way to bind to a specific interface. Maybe someone else knows...?
  25. What level? Beginner? Short of taking a class, you can find most of the same material for free on-line once you know what to search for. You can search amazon for networking books but I've found that CompUSA usually has a great selection on their discount rack. Most of the concepts and technologies of internetworking are pretty static. Just focus on learning the basics like IP addressing, subnetting, cabling, etc and you'll be off to a good start.
