  1. You should contact that site admin and see if they can help you out.
  2. Yeah, you can disable those if you aren't sharing anything on your LAN. The benefits of doing so? Disabling file/print sharing will make your box more secure.
  3. I can host files and space isn't an issue. Just send to me at DELETED and I'll take care of it. I was a fan of those free services until I went to update my codec pack and saw that the links are dead...they just aren't dependable.
  4. @Kramy: Please post your stuff for others to use.

    HFSLIP your codecs

kiki, the first thing I'll do is update the existing pack. AFter that, I'll be making separate zips for each codec for those who dont want to install everything. I am packing my bags now and will be on the highway home soon. Hopefully my new eyeballs can get me through 13 hours of driving!

TommyP is quite wise. Trust in his decision to not auto-create HFEXPERT.

    HFSLIP your codecs

I recommend that you go ahead and use the current pack. The only one I can think of off-hand that has been updated is the xvid codec (and qt/real). There may be others, but they would be trivial to update later. xvid is famous for having re-installation issues, but I don't know that the problems occur when using packs like this. It could be limited to the xvid installer.

    HFSLIP your codecs

I do plan to update this when I get a chance. I am still in my hotel recovering from eye sugery now...but I can see much better! When I get back home I start a new job that will either give me lots of time off of work, or nearly none at all. It could really go either way and I can't tell just yet. Like tommyp, I am also still using these codecs. The laptop that I brought with me on this trip is freshly HFSLIPped and uses these codecs...they are working fine for me. Please post any specific issues so that I can look into them.

My level of confusion is spiraling out of control.

    Stop it…

I am a knuckle-dragger and it sounds to me like all of these ideas being tossed around are more complex than the single sciprt as it currently exists. Does it HAVE to change? I like it the way it is, and the answer file is an awesome idea. And isn't it easier for the devs to keep a single script updated than to make multiple updates for multiple versions?
  12. Nicely done, FDV. It is funny to me that your reduction fileset is so mature and bug-free(!) that it is hardly ever talked about anymore. Many people use it but they rarely come here seeking FDV fileset support. This may make it seem like people don't use it but in reality it is just so well-developed and refined that nobody has any issues with it. Be proud, brother. Be proud.
  13. @tommyp: I still intend to work on the codecs like we discussed. My excuse is that my free time is very limited. Right now I am in a hotel in Ohio...had laser eye surgery done yesterday. So you can rest assured that I won't be putting out any codec packs any time soon! Reading/typing isn't easy right now...

A modular setup would be nifty but I still think that this project rocks the house as it is. FDV maintains a short checklist for users who just want the core HFSLIP funtctionality. For those who adventure further there are TONS of additional features. This works well but FDV is right about the documentation keeping pace with the development. Feature creep affects every project at some point but I think that its effects on scripts vice compiled programs are much less pronounced. It doesn't take any longer to run or require a stronger machine; compiled programs slow down a lot, require more horespower, and the .exe size tends to skyrocket...none of this happens to HFSLIP. Some have stated that a feature-rich HFSLIP may as well be nLite. I disagree strongly with that notion. The difference? In addition to the previously stated advantages, HFSLIP is open source. The project will survive even if the devs all get hit by a bus tomorrow. We can make changes. We can look at the code. These are priceless things. I say bravo to the HFSLIP devs. They do an outstanding job in every respect, including the most excellent end user support that I've ever seen. /me is still looking for the paypal button to donate to the HFSLIP project.
  15. This is mostly XP stuff, yeah? I know 2k can do some custom screens but I think that XP has much more robust support for such cosmetic things.
  16. Tomcat, would you mind keeping this post/thread up to date? You do a really great job of breaking this stuff down to my level
  17. Do we need the second variable? Why not this: ..and obviously I second the nomination to add this feature

    FDV/HFCLEANUP + IE

Aw crap. You're right as usual. The box is loading as I type this...not really worth it at this point to rebuild a new disc and start all over. Good tip, though. I'll build an IE5.1 disc when I have spare time in case I need to do this again. Thanks, everyone!

    FDV/HFCLEANUP + IE

Its cool now, just had to dump the reducers. This is only for one machine so the economy of scale doesn't really support an in-depth deconfliction between IE6/HFCLEANUP. I'll just run with it

    FDV/HFCLEANUP + IE

Wow, I'm really dorking this up, huh? Sorry about that zip file. I just did a right-click 'add to zip' which always creates a zip named after the working folder (using winrar) but didn't realize that I already had a hfslip.zip from TC I checked the log again and it does day HFCLEANUP detected. I was trying to say that I ran with HFCLEANUP, had issues, and will now try without HFCLEANUP. "w/o" means "without" to me...is that standard lingo? Sometimes my feeble mind can't remember which slang terms are from my military vernacular and which are American Standard.Previously, it was hanging with about an inch of blue bar. The bar froze there. VMWare was showing intermittent disk activity but nothing was happening. I waited forever and 'ejected' the CD from VMWare. Running w/o HFCLEANUP did the trick. Installed fine. Anyway, I have a working ISO now. I'd prefer to have it with HFCLEANUP but this will do for now

    FDV/HFCLEANUP + IE

I'm quite the n00b with HFSLIP+IE...here is what I did: From a known-good FDV/HFCLEANUP/WIN2K configuration, rebuilt these folders for IE6: FDVFILES FIX HF HFCABS I put setup.api and winnt.sif in my FIX folder along with my usual bootloaders (they were previously in FDV). I used TC's site to add the extra files/hotfixes for IE6 to HF/HFCABS And I got.....bupkis. The installer hangs after the HFSLIP window has done its thang during 'registers components'...so it is on 'Saves settings' and just sits there staring at me. Winking at me. Taunting me. Oh yeah...I WILL reset you! Report is attached. My next step is to try it w/o HFCLEANUP. HFSLIP.zip

    FDV/HFCLEANUP + IE

Tomcat: Yes, Win2k. OK, screw it then. It sounds too iffy. We'll just go with a comprehensive backup and reload the box
  23. tain

    FDV/HFCLEANUP + IE

We have one system that needs IE now but we'd like to avoid re-installing the OS. Damned IE dependencies! Is it possible to install IE on top of an FDV/HFCLEANUP system? If so, what version would work best for this? Is there a standalone installer from MS or perhaps a third party?
  24. IANAL or a licensing expert, but I here is my take: It depends on the license. GPL? Yes, they have to release their modifications to the code...but not any custom apps that run on top of the code without modifying it. BSD? No. They can keep everything to themselves. You mean redistribute the code? Depends on the license again, but generally yes. I think the way it is supposed to work is that the people who published code under the GPL would be the ones having their rights violated...it would be up to them to decide. These licenses aren't necessarily ironclad just yet. If you are seriously considering legal action you should contact the EFF for assistance. (Sorry for the double EFF plug today (other post). Just a coincidence.)
