  1. Did this box's ethernet card/port work with another DHCP (automatic IP) connection before you got into this hotel? In other words, do you KNOW that this thing works? Have you tried rebooting? That sometimes works miracles on MS boxes ... errr...wait a second! You are both using the same wired connection? At the same time? What device are you using to do that? A hub/router/switch? Have you tried switching cables? Have you tried switching hub/router/switch ports?
  2. Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed question! I agree with you that it looks like a security problem. This is most commonly by the confusion between the two different types of securty for MS LAN sharing: share permissions and NTFS permissions. I don't have an XP home machine but here is how to check for these on a Win2k machine...should be similar: Open windows explorer and navigate to the folder that is supposed to be shared out from the notebook Right-click on the folder and select "Sharing" (I think it is "Sharing and Security in XP) In the dialogue that pops up, look at the tabs across the top: The sharing tab is for network sharing permissions and the security tab is for NTFS permissions In the sharing tab, ensure that the share is enabled and then check the permissions button about half-way down the dialoge. Make sure the user/group is listed, maybe just 'everyone' in your case, and that ALLOW is checked for the permission that you want Be careful with the DENY boxes....they override other permissions even if the user is in two groups and one has permission. Make sure that none of the accounts/groups listed have DENY checked unless you want them to be denied access. Now we will look at the NTFS permissions Click OK and go the security tab The dialogue that appears is quote similar to the sharing one and the same steps/principles apply. Make sure the user/group is listed, maybe just 'everyone' in your case, and that ALLOW is checked for the permission that you want Watch out for deny! It will get you every time Hopefully that fixes your problem. If it doesn't, your users/groups may be screwed up...try setting up a new user on the laptop, setting the password, and giving that user permissions to the share (sharing and NTFS). Remember that with share/NTFS permissions the most restrictive rule will always apply.
  3. Are you both using the same hotel connection? If so, is it wired or wireless? Make sure your connection properties say "get IP automatically" or something to that effect.
  4. Try putting your IP in the DMZ first. If that doesn't work, install the latest firmware that is 'known good'...if reports are rampant that the current firmware is bad then use the last version that wasn't a lemon.
  5. I don't have any problems with this feature but I do think it would be nice to have the option listed in our "control panel."
  6. This is all I know...maybe you never actually added the link? I've never seen it myself...

Here is a copy of the file.
  8. @Bugs & FDV: Please update the link.
  9. Does this thread help you?

    hfnetchk download

I'm now hosting another copy "just in case." I'll post a link in a day or two after I am done monkeying with my DNS.
  11. Sounds like a simple link to a local script...so pick a language and fire away You might have better luck with this question in this forum.
  12. Maybe Google can help you while we wait for someone knowledgeable about such things to come along.
  13. It plays a factor in most activities, even for browsing. While the scenario question probably doesn't rely on upload spped too much, it 'counts' nonetheless.Web browsing isn't as simple as sending one request and getting an entire page. Every element (css, html, images, external elements) must be requested. Those requests must be made via the limited upload capacity. I'm not saying that that he needs to upgrade, I just want him to understand how the upgrade could impact him so that he can make the cost/benefit analysis.
  14. Sounds like you need XAMPP: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
  15. That's what I was thinking of It looks like Bashrat extended the olive branch, tommyp accepted, and then Bashrat went silent. Unless there has been coordination via pm/email...?
  16. I've said it before, I'll say it again: There should be a paypal account so that we can donate money to the devs. I would donate and others have said the same. Not sure if you guys would get enough to make it worth your while, but its better than nothing! EDIT: I could honcho this if there is interest.
  17. Didn't Bashrat make a post or two in an HFSLIP thread recently? I seem to remember that it looked like the start of some collaboration between devs.
  18. Would be a nice option to have, though.
  19. OK, gonna try this again... Before you do all of that maybe you should load up a LAMP environment and try it out? Check out XAMPP or a Live CD version in a virtual machine. I use XAMPP lite all the time when I am testing new stuff for one of my websites. Never tried the livecd, but it looks interesting and I'm a big fan of live cds in general. I seem to remember trying the Eclipse IDE a while back. It didn't do anything for me that smaller apps like HTMLKit didn't already do faster. YMMV. Never tried any fabforce tools, but I'm not much for DBs. They are too much like programming...which I can do, but try not to Side note: if you anticipate lots of LAMP discussion you should probably start a new thread for it. We have wandered around quite a bit in this one!
  20. The benefit would be faster web browsing. Browsing is mostly about downloading but upload speed does play a factor. Back when satellite internet connections were popular people would have pretty quick download speeds ont heir dishes but would upload via a 33.6/56k modem. It worked well for browsing at the time. It sounds like in your case you need to look at this from a cost/benefit perspective. If your users aren't complaining about their ability to browse then you probably shouldn't spend too much cash. If there are speed issues then this may be worth spending money on...how much money is up to you, of course. Make sure you look at all of the bandwidth packages offered by your provider. If you are having serious bandiwdth issues then this small of an upgrade probably won't be sufficient.
  21. Dagnabit! I had a response almost all typed up and lost it in a browser/user error. I'll redo it later :/
  22. There won't really be an appreciable difference for one person browsing the web. But if you have multiple users or you upload a lot then it might be worth it.
  23. I am way overdue here, but perhaps you will find this site helpful.
  24. Forgot to mention that LAMP is all the rage these days.
  25. Can you connect to any other wireless networks? Or is just this one that you can't connect with? If you can connect to other networks then there may be some sort of authentication needed for this network. There are alternatives to manually providing a key. There are dizzying array of custom methods really. If you can connect to other networks then you may need some extra info from the admins about how to connect to this network.
