  1. Not ENTIRELY OT... I use this Directory Compare tool. Google dirpr157 intitle:index.ofLast fully functional Shareware version. Occasional nag about "shareware" when starting it up it. No installation, just unzip somewhere. It will allow for copying source<->target for "not found" and/or "different" in some way, all based on Options settings. Some Settings "locked" (greyed out) but in the Functional way. edit - Screenshot - http://img.brothersoft.com/screenshots/softimage/d/dir_prudence-11482-1.jpeg
  2. Shouldn't speak too much of automobiles. Try getting a replacement head or quarter panel for any Ford product older than 1990. "Out of stock" - the Repair Person (me) supports it but the Company does not. Aftermarket MAYBE. The statement as given is true... (Guess I should have mentioned I'm a jackwagon of all trades.)
  3. As I had previously pointed out, there MAY be a possibility that his website is being completely revamped, e.g. http://www.mdgx.com/down.htmA lot of stuff may "automagically" reappear in a new place... or not.
  4. (must have lost track...) This got mixed in with the Maintenance thingy (from an earlier post about costs). The point is the good MS guys are reinventing a perfectly good wheel instead of giving it a real nice major update (under a new name, of course). Yank the 1967 Camaro engine, punch it out, rebuild, add headers and a double-pump Holley, major customize the doghouse and rear end - voila! "New Car" of higher quality and cheaper than New Car.Again OT - that was Mainframe Compilers=Cobol, Fortran, PL/I, RPG, Assembler (etc.)
  5. Indeed, reading more that just Post#1 and Post#2 would have told you that. BTW, "nothing had changed" because the changes get "wiped" after each reboot and that's the reason for "re-editing". Notice my PC is in the list of Greater Than 1gb (2048mb).
  6. Didn't see the feature in the given DuplicateFileFinder to delete duplicates. This one does a similar function and provides for deletions. http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/duplicate-file-finder/ Wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auslogics_Duplicate_File_Finder A review Pros/Cons - http://www.pcworld.com/article/2013264/review-auslogics-duplicate-file-finder-frees-up-hard-drive-space-quickly.html In any case, your needs are to eliminate dups after being "found". Thx, jaclaz, for the link...
  7. Chipping in again... re - the "Cloud" (Adobe) As was stated, Internet sux in US/AU/Canada per speed. You could have a SuperComputer but the transfer speed would not change one whit. Good luck with that. re - "Maintenance Costs" for "obsolete OS" Disagree, because I was in Maintenance on Mainframe (so-called "Legacy" Applications) support. It usually was VERY expensive to produce the Documentation (Flowcharts, Pseudo-code, User Manuals, DB Normalization, etc) and the actual Application (including App Interfaces) not to mention the TIME to produce it (sometime several years) for a TEAM when, after Implementation, a "bug" found usually took about 2 hrs to "fix" and in many cases no more than an hour to implement said fix by a SINGLE PERSON. Fact! So SOMEONE is severely misguided in their analysis of Reality. These "business decisions" (IMHO) are not rational nor are the "opinions" of the "Root for the new". OT (but an analogy) - Anyone consider the difference between working on, say, a (Chevrolet) 1967 Camaro and a 2013 Camaro? Try it sometime - the time and expense of the "repair" is VASTLY different. In addition, try grinding the metal of both for an autobody repair - the difference is ASTOUNDING (one's metal warps - guess which one). edit - In response to Jaclaz' comments above... Ummm. I personally "reworked" several Applications to conform to the latest Compilers AND streamlined (practically rewrote) one within six months. (Air Force Materiel Command, for the HQ of ALL of the USAF). In addition, it was ALSO in alignment with NEW hardware. I call "Baloney", because it CAN be done! Trading a SINGLE experienced Programmer for two INEXPERIENCED ones for the sake of "cost" is (in the long run) a bad trade!
  8. Oops! Apologies to gora! (must have been thinking of a Japanese monster flick...)
  9. Interestingly, the SuperUser link provided says exactly this - Use Latest Technology. 1080P (also citing Wiki) exactly states the info given as to resolution - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p Based on the given info, use Oxygen Free Copper (also the choice for sound engineers) Adapter (if can be found, else just high-quality/"expensive") with the DisplayPort, barring a DVI port. P.S. y'all! notorious for low-quality cost-cutting parts. Disclaimer - Above is opinion of an opinionated person.
  10. ...back when "Punch Cards" didn't mean wholloping one? Nonetheless, investigation reveals the BIOS updates of those beasties is stinky-poo with no method of recovery. After all it WAS suggested that was the route (hot-swap) to go (see immediately preceding posts)... in response to (sigh...) back to the grind. B)
  11. Universal Extractor - no further changes being made.... You're on your own on that one - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPQ edit - AHHH!!! Goru is "maintaining" it - see this thread - http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8201 It also links to a Russian Website (where Goru releases the latest). Also see this - http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9771
  12. OK, I've been busy a few days.... May I point out I am very familiar with "hot-swap" (older HP's in particular) using "near identical MoBo's". HOWEVER, please note that I would need - 1 - a Reference Chip (from where?) 2 - to de-solder the Chip(s) <-THAT will never happen 3 - possibly (if this is what you're referring to)) a Flasher Card "Kit" + Flash the Chip Um... no thanks - they will stay bricked and, time permitting, get the $5 each from recycle. Final possibility is the battery (haven't bothered) for the "no keyboard" one. Please note what I said about that particular Dell BIOS - I would need the "REAL" BIOS code, not the "dumbed down" one peovided in the "package". Do downloaded it, not what it is, "unpack" it (if you can, easily with e.g. WinRAR) and note that it is indeed NOT the full 512-kByte BIOS code. I DID, however, back up the REALLY OLD one (v1.1.2 that is NOT on Dell site) from the "totally dead" one using WinFlash before the "Error Error Error" and, being distracted (grandkids), didn't load it BACK in after the failure. Need I say more? Jeez, guys, I didn't fall off the Intern Truck just yesterday... Bottom line, the C521/E521 BIOS were "poorly made" cross-breed mBTX (bass-ackwards) nVidia MoBo's...
  13. Service Pack 4 -AND- the latest Windows Update Agent - http://www.wincert.net/forum/topic/9907-repak-windows-update-agent-767600256/ If you prefer to "build your own" look here - The PREVIOUS version (functions fine) is here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928 Yes, they put you in a "Catch-22" with that, didn't they?
  14. Thank you, Jaclaz - and now to what I was talking about --- (sigh...) E521/C521 specifically! Just allow Google to "suggest" and enter e521 biosand you WILL immediately find the Failure Links right at the top. Consistent MoBo bricks and replacements. I even found one where they replaced brand new MoBo THREE TIMES with the same Keyboard Failure - the TECHS! The WORKAROUND (buried in the deep dark recess if the WWW) was to IGNORE the stupid text about "Windows" and put it on a Bootable USB Stick/Floppy or Real Floppy (there IS a Floppy Header on them). BUT you had to have that ENABLED in the BIOS beforehand. And AGAIN, the SECOND MoBo automagically "lost" everything using the Clear CMOS jumper per their own instructions in the Service Manual. EVERYTHING is (apparently) "disabled" because NOTHING is recognized, not just "defaults" but DISABLED! And YES, remove/swap/reset - nada! If I can update BIOS in No-Memory-Manager DOS I WILL do it to prevent any of the silly stuff. I have NEVER updated via Windows - NEVER if possible. Bad Ju-Ju! Please note that these BIOS actually are an "expandable" process (packed) and DO expand into - RAM! Now, lets have that "shuffled" into the Page File... Genius! MFLASH is inside it! The BIOS Update is not normal - Dell's "specialized package" method that can NOT be separated. Sorry I even mentioned it... edit - for the record - First one is toast, second one even a PCI->PS2 may not save it since it NEEDS a Keyboard to even enter the BIOS...
  15. First one is easy to find - google bios update "failure! failure! failure!"Dimension E521 (or C521 basically the same MoBo). Second one is dimension bios update "keyboard error"Note that this is when you have USB-only (no PS/2), which in my book is INSANE because you're left with no options! Basically it's the POS Phoenix (actually AWARD!) BIOS Updates done via Windows. Trust me, horror stories about this. I've flashed many a BIOS (DOS Floppy) without a problem until this stupid stuff. Two doorstops... The REASON to update the BIOS was because the latest one allows for 8GB RAM (4 slots) + Newer AM2 CPU's (up to X2 6400+ w/good heat sink). Guess I'll be waiting for my SS Retirement to come in July and just build my own. No more Dell, thank you - seems they have gone downhill (look it up). Local Used PC store has three similar but only TWO SATA (instead of the FOUR on E521) at... $130 each. So, yeah, I give fair warning.
  16. Reminder #2 - If you are doing this for your COMPANY you are violating the nLite EULA as well. Better read those Stickies, Bubba! BTW, your arguments are becoming circular - you first wanted IE8 and WMP11. AND you were slipstreaming ALL of the SP's - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=156339&view=findpost&p=995700 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=156339&view=findpost&p=995672 I don't think I'll help anymore. You're on your own...
  17. Two $5 doorstops made just last weekend. Dell's - the first doorstop due to the Dell BIOS Update run on the OEM XP (not Safe Mode). Both E521's - original and Backup Mobo - Clear CMOS Jumper does just that all right - resets the whole shebang to Disabled so no USB Keyboard to even Reset Defaults. Have yet to attempt an Add-In PCI PS/2 Card (to be found/purchased). Trust me - if you can't do it Pure DOS with NO Memory Manager, do it under Windows in Safe mode with NO running Services or Apps. PERIOD or you risk a brick. PuntoMX isn't just "lucky" - NORMALLY a dual-bios will keep you out of trouble. I have seen where even that isn't totally failsafe. One wrong operation and you have a $5 doorstop. Google failed bios update dualhttp://www.gigabyte.com/microsite/55/tech_081226_dualbios.htm There have, however, been reported failures. Also note that Gigabyte has the patent on this.
  18. OK fine, REMOVE the IE8 files from -X- Updates. IGNORE WMP11. YOU are responsible for the IE6 Updates as -X- has made them "Obsolete". ADD all -X- Updates and SORT them. THEN add YOUR files. How in the WORLD can nLite Slip Updates to an Add-On that has NOT YET BEEN SLIPPED? 1 - Include an Add-On 2 - NOW include an Add-On fix so nLite can OVERLAY the ORIGINALS See? Order is Important... Footnote #9 - http://xdot.tk/updates.html The SAME goes for the IE8 - it MUST be slipped first BEFORE the IE8 Fixes - THAT is why I gave the Tutorial Instructions, OK? Understand? Verstehen Sie? Got it? Again, ignore instructions and it's on you, not the Tutor. EDIT! NO NO NO!!! Do NOT do any of this in SEPARATE RUNS! It must be done ALL AT ONCE! You did NOT read the FAQ, did you? Front of nLite Subforum - FAQ, Reference, DoNotRemove STICKIES! http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/89-nlite/ BIG GIANT P.S. - MS said you can't INSTALL the Service Pack on a RUNNING system, that does NOT include Slipstreaming! http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24 SPECIFICALLY -http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/learn-how-to-install-windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3 See? a RUNNING XP.
  19. First link you just provided is just a starting point. I gave the EXACT link to the SPECIFIC selections. Second link you just gave is the one I gave to you. Just like the MS-DOS Mode CD Drivers, they should be loaded in the same way. MS-DOS mode is NOT the same as a Command Prompt. You LITERALLY Exit Windows and Start MS-DOS which is an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT set of StartUp. I have a set of DOS-Only MS Games that I start with a special BAT file that "kicks off" MS-DOS mode for each of them. (Above is to answer your question about needing them) Start with the Windows95 Drivers first to get it working and we'll work from there for DOS-Mode. Don't forget to Disable your On-Board Sound and REMOVE the "Device Manager" entries for it BEFORE popping the Card in. 1 - In Windows, Remove On-Board Sound in Dev. Mgr. 2 - Reboot to BIOS and Disable it - SAVE the Setting 3 - Shut Off / Unplug PC 4 - Insert Card / Plug In PC 5 - Start Windows and install Drivers 6 - Test Sound / Joystick (note: Midi is a different story) REMEMBER that I said that Creative is (apparently) no longer providing the Files. You have to SEARCH for them as I said. edit - After looking at this Topic that you posted in I searched for the "older version" of that CD/DVD Driver and found it in the website where I found all of your Drivers AND if you look at the the "INDEX" file (yes, it's a TXT file) you'll get a description of their purpose. http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/misc/creative/
  20. -X- does NOT provide "Optional Updates" and that was SPECIFICALLY STATED in the OTHER "How to Integrate" Topic. You have not been paying attention. Now, as for that pesky "IE8 Update" - did you FIRST do the "How To Integrate" EXACTLY as I said and NOTHING ELSE to test whether the PROBLEM was the EXTRAS you added in (that I did NOT address in the Other Topic)? START with the "BASICS" and THEN add AFTERWARDS! DO NOT BOTHER with SP2 - My Topic INCLUDED the SP3, did it not? Downloading the "extras" now. Are you integrating them in the correct order? (will check your LastSession.) P.S. - Downloaded a VL - really? Are you SURE it's "clean"? And... DOWNLOADED? REALLY??? edit - Found your problem, Slick! You ignored the ORIGINAL instructions about SORT ORDER! Congratulations for not reading the instructions. Do it ALL OVER again, and do EXACTLY as stated in Other Topic, THEN one-by-one add the "real" Add-On's AFTERWARD. Order IS important! I haven't tried the OTHER files DIRECTLY from MS that you tried to "add" but they MAY not be able to Integrate directly.
  21. You REALLY should provide Links when asking about a specific software (NOT a Direct File Link) - http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/download.asp?MainCategory=&sOSName=Windows+95&region=1&Product_Name=Sound+Blaster%AE+16&Product_ID=1842&modelnumber=&driverlang=1033&OS=1&drivertype=0&x=12&y=1 I had to properly Google to find where you had gotten that. To make matters worse, I apparently can't download because the "Download" links are roads to nowhere. Expand the "more" to get the filenames, then google (example) "ctcmbbs.exe" intitle:index.of You'll want/need the DOS/WIN3.x files as well (the "other" ones you didn't list) if you want to run DOS games in MS-DOS mode. I had previously given some links for some "SET BLASTER" type information. I have the same files for an AWE64 Gold ISA card (still have it). ONE you left unlisted (and may be unnecessary) for DOS is "SBBASIC.EXE". Look here for what looks like a "full set" (maybe older, but...) ftp://ftp.kstu-kai.ru/drivers/sound/Creative/SB16PNP.SB/
  22. A couple of things - 1 - The Key is of value if you wish to "construct" a CD from HDD contents * - see my given links 2 - The School should NEVER have allowed THEIR key to be released * - discussed enough 3 - It MAY have been "somebody" attempting to "Fix" (or upgrade) a Win2000 install * - therefore, it may NOT have been School Approved in the first place 4 - "Total Disk Usage=2.5gb" - betting that Install Folder (I386) doesn't exist * - therefore (see below) you would need a CD for #1 above For fun, to confirm whether it's the School's or a "pirated", you could do a WWW search on it. If it's found at all, it may/may not even be a GOOD install (hacked components). Be aware that "hacked" ones may/may-not allow Updates or tolerate a GOOD Antivirus. If it indeed is the School's (not on the www), you walk on shaky ground. Just sayin'...
  23. An interesting question is posed here at post#7 - You're not giving much to go on. Can you elaborate?
  24. May be, but I find it "odd" that the school would sell a PC with a VLK and not "wipe" the HDD (SOP) whereas an OEM Install (plus COA) makes it irrelevant (maybe) depending on what it was used for (private school info e.g. used in the Office vs used in the classroom). To answer the Ghost question specifically, YES you can do that but for a SPECIFIC partition "split", you'll need to 1 - Ghost Backup 2 - delete the larger 3 - define the smaller 4 - Ghost Restore I would recommend using the Ghost Option "Image Boot" and a Full HDD Backup. You can restore just the single Partition from it. After the Restore, you can proceed to create other Partitions within the Windows.
  25. I can also point out that right there in the Main Topic Post it specifically states the purpose of the Tutorial and that it absolutely works following it to the LETTER! Additionally, it states that it does NOT address anything above and beyond, as you are doing and it WARNS of it. Try it TO THE LETTER and see if it woks. If so, you need not post again here because there is no error in the Tutorial. If not, then the Tutorial will need corrected. Anything done BEYOND the Tutorial is an entirely different Topic. Make another Topic AFTER you've confirmed that this Tutorial works and providing both the Problem and the LastSession file. Notice that nLite subforum has Big Red Instructions at the top of each Topic Page. You did not comply with it.
