  1. This is a program that was pre-installed on my DELL computer when purchased. It is a security system that DELL has installed. I've just started using that computer so finding out exactly what SecureUpgrade is has been placed on my to do list.
  2. Thank you for replying Niven! Just the thought of installing SP3 makes my heart skip many beats! Yikes! I am happy that SP3 cleared your problems! Cheers!
  3. It appears that there is a problem when Windows Update attempt to install Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806) I see Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is installed when I look under Add and Remove Programs. Also Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 plus its hot fix is there as well. Windows Update can’t installed Microsoft .NET Framework Service Pack1 (KB110806). Windows Update has tried at least six times to install the service pack. I looked in the Error logger (Event Viewer) and I found some interesting things: Event Type: Information Event Source: MsiInstaller Event Category: None Event ID: 1025 Date: 4/10/2008 Time: 5:33:54 PM User: ComputerName\username Computer: ComputerName Description: Product: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1. 4. I moved a larger partition holding the operating system to a smaller partition on a different drive. (This drive has never held the OS before.) It appears that I didn't have a problem with the move. Most of the work was done by Acronis 10. When I reinstalled the hard drive (in a different machine) that contained the transfered OS into the computer the system would not boot. I came to the conclusion that ROM didn't know where to find the OS. I booted up Dos 6.22 fired up FDISK and assigned an active disk. When I rebooted ROM found Windows XP BUT will not complete the booting process. Attempting to boot "normally" causes a loop. I can see the Windows Banner and then the booting process starts from the beginning. When I attempt to reboot via Safe Mode the procedure starts as usual then stops at the blue Windows banner. BTW, the OS/partition was placed at the beginning of the drive. Where should I go from here? Thanks!
  5. Thank you Miko for replying! B) The links you gave me are great! I was able to rebuild her system with no problems. I was able to put Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 on her machine without any problems but I didn't do any Windows update for her. I'm going to buy a NIC card so that I can temporarily install it in her computer and then to a windows update. I need a NIC card anyway. It appears that I have a string of these computers coming my way. Thanks! Thank you travisowens for links. B) It's like putting icing on the cake! Chow! I wish I could get her to use 98SE. She won't budge! Thank you for replying LLXX!
  6. I lived in Toronto where the weather is usually cold this time of year. Fortunately we are having a very mild winter. I work with computers every day doing operating system rebuilds, building computers, removing viruses etc. I'm hoping that my stay here will be as rewarding for me as for you. Cheers!
  7. I have a woman that I support that refuses to move forward with the times. She (an older woman) has problems connecting to the Internet. She can't do a clean shutdown. Her Operating system (Win 95) comes back with a host of errors. I decided that it would be a lot easier for me to do an OS rebuild (Win95) and install an updated copy of IE. She is attempting to use version 3 of IE! (Some body kill me!) I guess installing version IE 5.5 SP2 would be the way to go. Is that correct? I am sure that there are several other things I should look out for. It has been forever since I touched Win95. The OS rebuild went well. I can connect to the Internet but there are problems when I disconnect. I heard about a winsock update that should be applied to Windows 95 but I can't find it. Can you point me to any updates, downloads that I should apply to Win95? Please let me know. Thanks!
  8. Thanks Chris for the info! After uninstalling the rollup I am still fixing the problems it left behind..... Cheers!
  9. Two days ago I installed Microsoft’s Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 on one computer. After the successful (?) installation of the update I was not able to access the Internet or other computers on my LAN (Peer-to-Peer). At that point I uninstalled Microsoft’s Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4. After the uninstall I was able to access the Internet but soon after I realized that I could not communicate with the computers at home via the network. All of the other computers can talk and see one another, pass files back and forth etc. They could not see me I could not see them. Finally after trying >many< things I removed all networking components from Comet (Comet is the computer that got injured via the Update), reboot then set them up again. Now I can connect to the Internet see and access all computers on the LAN. The down side is that the computers on the LAN can see me (Comet) but cannot access the computer. Example: When I am on another computer (Blazer) and trying to reach the other computer (Comet) I get the following message: \\Comet is not accessible. The network path was not found. Comet is the computer that got injured via the Update. On each computer I have done an IPconfig/all. Everything looks correct. The network configuration data found under the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties is the same for all computers on the LAN with the exception of the IP addresses. The computers addresses were setup manually. NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers From Comet I can ping to the other machines. Under "Network Identification" tab everything looks correct on the troubled machine (Comet). After I did a nbtstat –n on Comet I looked in the Event Viewer and discovered an error (Event Viewer error follows the nbtstat -n data): C:\WINNT\system32>nbtstat -n Local Area Connection: Node IpAddress: [192.280.1.176] Scope Id: [] NetBIOS Local Name Table Name Type Status --------------------------------------------- COMET <00> UNIQUE Registered COMET <20> UNIQUE Registered WGM <00> GROUP Registered INet~Services <1C> GROUP Registered IS~COMET....<00> UNIQUE Registered WGN <1E> GROUP Registered WGN = Workgroup Name Event Viewer Error Message: Event Type: Error Event Source: NetBT Event Category: None Event ID: 4319 Date: 8/18/2005 Time: 6:55:49 PM User: N/A Computer: COMET Description: A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The IP address of the machine that sent the message is in the data. Use nbtstat -n in a command window to see which name is in the Conflict state. OK I have the data from the NetBIOS Local Name table as you can see but I am not sure what my next step should be. Where do I go from here? I feel am so close to completing the final step yet so far............ Any comments or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!
  10. What I have done is uninstalled the update. I wait a bit until the dust settles down before installing it again.
  11. This morning I updated a box with the W2K rollup. The update procedure went well. No problems. I rebooted the machine as the update procedure requested. When I attempted to connect to the Internet via my browser it failed! I tried several applications Outlook, IE, ZoneAlarm just to name a few. At this point reaching the Internet is impossible. I ran a LspFix followed by a WinsockFix and rebooted the machine. When the machine rebooted I still could not reach the Internet. What am I missing (besides the Internet)? What should I do next? Any suggestions are comments are welcome! Thanks! ADDED: I am thinking about uninstalling the Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4. What problems would that create by doing so?
