  1. @CoffeFiend & @dencorso - I was aware of all of that. I've done extensive research on it (several days' worth). The initial "hijack" was about the comparisons (based on comment by da-Coffee-Nut). I am, after all, running a "Celery 3.3" single-core as we speak! And I already have 3gb in the E521 already - swapped some old computer parts for two 1g's from the local PC Recyclers. Need 3 more to round out this one and... I suppose my better bet would be the "eMachine W3650 ECS 945GCT-M3 PCB3.1" sitting here in pieces. It'll take up to E7300 or X6800. Sadly, it only takes 2gb RAM 2x1gb (according to specs). It does, however, have 2-PCI+4-SATAII+1-PATA+1-PCIe-x16 (and the other useless x1). Both have Floppy (a must for me). [/hijack] Back to the OP (that has $ to burn)...
  2. I really don't want to hijack this thread, but...Can I assume you also refer to the x2-series? I plan on reloading this Dell E521 sitting in the corner and have changed the 3800+ for an x2 3800+, later ($ permitting) the "max" the AM2 will take. Accepts 4g RAM, has 2 PCI-e slots (the shortie and longie) for upgrades (a dual-head VID card when $ permits). SATA-only - bass-ackwards MoBo. It does seem pretty snappy on boot-up/running with the "stock" XP-MCE. [/hijack]
  3. Maybe MS will want you to upgrade to Win8 to get it permanently fixed.
  4. Why don't you just make a 7-Zip Self-Extractor? UE is, after all, Portable. Just make the Self-Extract force to a certain folder instead of the "Temp" folder, then just double-click UE... edit - the Creator isn't (apparently) making too many updates lately and it's unlikely they'll bother with something so simple anyone can do.
  5. Yes - the OP disregarded your recommendation.
  6. Read through this topic for some additional info on "how-to's".
  7. @Ascii2 - WTH are you talking about? BOTH of those links provide comprehensive lists for SP3, the first containing "the basics", the second containing both those additional ones. BTW, it's already been noted that you start from SP1 and "update" from there (disregarding SP2/SP3, apparently due to using >4gb RAM among other items - tried x64 yet?) so what's the beef? You're giving inaccurate information based upon your own Hardware specs, my friend. edit - you referring to this? Your complaint seems to mainly about the "new HAL limitations". Well, the thing is, the realization came that MS was giving away an x64 functionality away for... FREE!!! @LMHmedchem Use the lists (start wit -X- because it auto-downloads specifically for nLite) - you'll be in good shape.
  8. Just an FYI... you wouldn't have been able to transfer any newer Adobe Products (e.g. Photoshop CS3) and possibly other software anyway without re-activating. You could, however use the "Transfer License" function in Adobe products o "move" it to another compatible OS. There is "special license data" buried in one of the first 64 sectors (can't remember which one ATM) of your HDD. You could use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" on x86, storing "somewhere else", then Clean Install x64, reinstall all of you after-x86-initial software, then use the Wizard to complete the operation. However, as pointed out, the only benefit you'll have from x64 is that the OS will be able to access ~>3gb memory (and/or maybe run a little faster) unless you can obtain the x64 version of any User Software (which is still no benefit unless ~>3gb). Also, some Drivers may not work with ~>3gb and you would have to get compatible ones - this may not be a problem since you already checked that. Many OEM PC vendors installed x86 versions on 64-bit hardware for just those reasons. You could also (if you have room on your HDD) "shrink" the current partition and install the x64 on a second partition and dual-boot (if you want to play around). Again, just an FYI. Otherwise, stick with the x86 version.
  9. Not meaning to bump this topic, but here's an interesting and related article about Junction Points / Reparse Points (with some basic code examples).
  10. Hot in these parts - must-a got a brain melt... and thx for the reminder of the "standard litany". Will use soon ("How soon?" - "VERY soon!").Ennyhoo, the "key" is apparently (AFAICT) in the "Explorer\BitBucket" reg entries. ...and I've attempted to find the Topic/Post indicating that the "Recycle Bin limit" is indeed applicable to 98/98SE/ME, but I remember (no old-timers yet) seeing it "once upon a time". @Nomen - good luck. edit - hmmm... also found this (on MSFN).
  11. 1 - You get THROUGH Text-Mode, correct? Then Reboot? If i'm not mistaken, the "normal" method of Install From USB requires the use of creating the "$Win_NT$.~bt" and ".~ls" folders and the root files first. You would have to then manually alter several files (see this). That's one way. Another way is to use Grub4DOS and mount the CD ISO Image in memory (provided sufficient memory exists). In the way you just used (apparently from jaclaz' link), you said "it didn't work" / "txt mode' / "starting windows" / "BSOD" Assuming, you followed the steps to the letter it should have worked (never tried it myself). Is there any way you can actually SAY what the BSOD (generic term with no specific meaning) was? You mentioned an EEE PC - maybe problems with drivers?. It's obvious that the USB is now bootable though... Largest hurdle passed...
  12. (sigh... must be a language/communication gap) Let me clarify my question - #3 - Did it ever FULLY boot into the XP AND RUN when you selected XP after you "installed the UBUNTU after XP3"? You say "Yes u r correct" and that implies that you COULD and you actually SEEN in XP3 "Control Panel->Remove" the UBUNTU listed there along with other programs you installed in XP3. Is this Correct? You REALLY did see this AFTER you installed Ubuntu ON TOP OF XP3 in the SAME PARTITION? HD0 - has ONE partition - C-drive HD0 - has TWO partitions - C-drive and D-drive See what I mean about PARTITIONS? BTW, WinXP cannot RUN on anything but a FAT32 or NTFS parition. I DID ask (in #2) what your PARTITION layout was, NOT about how many hard drives. Answer this question. How many partitions (one C, two C+D -AND- what Format (FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, WHAT?). I cannot help if you don't answer the questions completely. Not one-line "u r correct" because you did not give FULL information. EDIT! "XP3 HANGS AFTER ENTERING PASSWORD" I guess I should ask... Just "hangs" or does it return to the "Welcome" (logon) Screen? one question you say ONLY "xp3 hangs"... WHEN? Do you see an XP screen at all? Or just... HANGS with no XP screen? --- I'm installing an "XP3" and getting ready to install Ubuntu (the one in the link I gave) now. Will report back on my personal findings... "4.4gb available hard disk space" - not enough - selections "replace XP" or "resize"
  13. I think it does... FWIW, I found this. Use said utility at your own risk. Also found this but it doesn't state which OS it applies to. Again, use at your own risk. Note - appears to be XP, but it may well work for an older OS. edit - found this - scroll down. Appears to be $$$ package. Again, not responsible, just giving what I find.
  14. Really? (maybe I'm wrong... )And you never answered #1 - or maybe THAT is what you are seeing when you get "Select OS" - NOT NTLDR but the Ubuntu Loader, which has BOTH OS'. You do know the difference between the two, right? Ubuntu will install a different Boot Loader ("GRUB") that runs BEFORE "NTLDR" or the actual Ubuntu (and which "points" to the Ubuntu OR WinXP to "select one"). "Control Panel->Remove" - is that in XP (which was question #3 that you never fully answered) or Ubuntu? 3 - Did it ever FULLY boot into the XP AND RUN when you selected XP after you installed? The only reference I've found is when you boot to the Ubuntu CD and select "Install Alongside" ("WUBI"). edit - and I found this thread. It really looks like your "pointers" and "loaders" (not to mention Boot Code) are messed up. edit2 - and also found this. Which means that what you suggest doesn't sound right at all.
  15. The problem is not with 7-Zip but with the USER-WRITTEN PROGRAM (written in Visual Studio, maybe a C++ Program, which internally calls MSIEXEC with an improper path)! BAT files will not fix this. The PROGRAM needs fixed! Here is a hint...
  16. ans1 1st xp3 ,,,2nd ubuntuans 2 both os in c ans 3 yes but can not use or log in it.. 1 - OK so you set up Ubuntu to be the BootManager? (Boot either Ubuntu or XP) 2 - Really? How did you get BOTH on the C-Drive? -(note: a Partition is not the same as a Hard Drive - a Hard Drive CONTAINS Partitions) 3 - Not a good answer - Did it ever fully boot into XP (you are indicating you NEVER were able to after installing Ubuntu)
  17. 1 - In which order did you do the installs of the OS's? 2 - What is the Partition Layout and what OS is on which one? 3 - Were you able to boot into the XP anytime after both were installed? This topic should maybe have been in the XP subforum. It might get noticed more easily.
  18. Well, if I can make a Bootable LiveXP USB stick with the instructions given for creating it, I can surely create a MultiPartition Bootable USB stick, or even an Install USB Stick. The "key" to making them has been given with the appropriate links. There are various methods for each, using various BootStrap programs. I prefer Grub4DOS, but that's just me. BTW, the FIRST thing to do is to ensure that the USB Device is indeed bootable, then take it from there. I have two sticks, one of them having two partitions, the second accessible only with a "special driver" (not really, but I use it) in the USB-Bootable OS and it does work! Summary - Don't be so rash as to say "the instructions suck" just because you want something that "magically" does everything for you the first try... And don't forget to RTFM (all info given in said links) - in some cases you just need to run part of the "tool" (see previous paragraph) and do the rest manually.
  19. @odar - appreciate the detailed explanation of how you do it, except... The OP specifically states that the call to MSIEXEX is done from within a Visual Studio "SETUP.EXE" that they have compiled, which means the path given within the SETUP.EXE is not working. @ipen - have you considered trying to create an Install with something OTHER THAN a 7-zip?
  20. I'm not going to bother with searching for the Topics on MSFN (yes, they are here) with references/links to varoius MS (and other) articles on the Recycle Bin, suffice it to say that the "way it works" will NEVER change! It will ALWAYS say "1.99gb" and the "percent" will have absolutely NO EFFECT on such a large partition! The "limit" is STUCK there and can't be changed. Norton 2002 "protected recycle bin" (IMHO) stinks like a rotten egg. The best thing you could do for your setup (again, IMHO) is to 1 - Uninstall that part of Norton 2002 2 - Set Recycle Bins to "independent" 3 - Change that LARGE partition's bin to "Delete Immediately" 4 - BE CAREFUL when deleting files from it Do a google this way - "recycle bin" "windows 98" site:www.msfn.org and this way - "recycle bin" "windows 98" rloew site:www.msfn.org ...for some insight... (btw rloew is one of the main experts on Windows 98 patching, and I'm pretty sure that somewhere he stated that you were "stuck" with it...)
  21. True, but you didn't say so... So the knowledge wasn't available in the first post.
  22. Additional (all of it) Info - Flash Player 11.1 Admin Guide It appears that I don't have that file. One might assume it may need created. I do, however, have a User-Specific "settings.sol" that says Update is Disabled (in hex editor). Did a quick search and found this (odd behavior). edit @GrofLuigi - OHHH! That would be a User Full Installer maybe . I've been using the "Distributable" ones. Maybe a difference
  23. I really hope it holds up... you're pushing it overclocking to 150mhz. The life of the RAM and CPU will shorten (but you know that already). I imagine you have great cooling too...
  24. I have a question - how did you defeat the 137gb barrier? You may be treading on dangerous ground...
