svchost.exe Error AutoUpdate at fault?
vinodh replied to codejunkie's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
I never tried Windows Update on my MCE PC. I used Autopatcher XP, Update Rollup 2 and the October 2006 update. Everything seems fine. I will be re-installing MCE soon, and i'll try Windows Update then. -
I had the Beta Office 2007 Kit. It was a volume licence version. A pity that the trials require activation.

The Acer AL2017 20" is quite good. 4:3, not wide screen. 8ms. I bought one a couple of months back. Excellent. Mine's silver. You might be able to get a black one, though. Saw it for £163 and upwards on the net.

Installing Internet Explorer 6 with SP1 on Windows XP with SP2
vinodh replied to Ascii2's topic in Windows XP
You could also try this: [from www.microsoft.com] Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet Explorer 6 Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. When you try to reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message: Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system. Setup cannot continue. To avoid this error message and reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, follow these steps: 1. While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK. 3. Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify. To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} To reinstall only Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP, use the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} 4. Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK. 5. Quit Registry Editor, and then install Internet Explorer 6. So, carry out the reg fix. Then Install IE6sp1. Might work. No gaurantees, though. -
Installing Internet Explorer 6 with SP1 on Windows XP with SP2
vinodh replied to Ascii2's topic in Windows XP
Found this : Internet Explorer 6 SP1 is included with Windows XP SP1 and Windows XP SP2. If Windows XP SP1 or Windows XP SP2 is installed on your computer, you do not have to download and install Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/318378 In other words, install SP2 for XP and you will automatically have installed IE6 with its sp1 -

The system fonts as well as the terminal font appear in notepad, BTW
-
System fonts are in your "C:\windows\fonts\ " folder. They are hidden by default. I think that the one you are looking for is called "8514sys.fon". I'm not sure how to get this font to work in MS Word, though.

Check the settings of the DVD decoder that you are using.

Upgrading Media Center Edition version 2002
vinodh replied to patriciaa's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
If you right-click on My Computer>Properties>General, it will say Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002. That does not mean you DON'T have MCE 2005. It's just the version of XP thats 2002. To view what version of Media Center you have , startup Media Center and go to Settings>>General>About Media Center>>Software Version. Remember: check this within Media Center, not XP. Here's a screenshot of what you will see: -
MCE 2005 "My Videos" continuous playback?
vinodh replied to tap52384's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
Here's a plugin I found. It can do the following: 1. Input a title for the playlist (you can reuse and overwrite playlist filenames if you want) 2. Select videos listed in the RecordedTV and MyVideos section of MCE to include in a playlists* 3. Rearrange the order of the playlist after selecting the video files 4. Create an ASX with the title of the playlist you entered 5. Play the playlist by selecting the ASX file in the MyVideos section of MCE I've tried it and it works. VideoPlaylistCreator.zip -
"screw up his PC"? Why don't you post the problems experienced with MCE on that PC and we'll try to help you fix it. Might be the best option, I think.

If you right click on the task bar>toolbars>language bar, then you should be in business. In your scenario, try this: Go to Control Panel->Regional and Language Options->Languages->Details...->Advanced and uncheck the "turn off advanced text services" and reboot.

If I just wanted to poke around and try to find stuff to keep myself busy, I'd use Linux. If I want to get stuff done, I use Windows. Also, when Windows 95 was released, most of my friends refused to upgrade because they said Windows 3.1 was better. Then, they upgraded anyway and said the same thing about Windows 98 and Millenium. Then, they upgraded anyway, again, and fussed about how crappy Windows XP is. Now, everyones running XP and most of them are complaining about Vista being too heavy on resources, blah blah blah. Just admit that you are wrong, is what I say. No OS is perfect, but we all know, deep down, that we are going to all move over to Vista. Vista is still new, and has faults. We will find ways around them and it will be a better OS. If i'm wrong, then go ahead and install MS DOS 6.22 and get it over and done with! P.S. While you're there, switch on the Nintendo and have a quick game of Mario Brothers, just for old times sake. ;-)

Media Player 11 and AutoPlaylists
vinodh replied to vinodh's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
After searching everywhere for help, I decided to remove WMP11 and revert to ver 10. I followed the this procedure: GOTO -> C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallwmp11$\spuninst\spuninst.exe after the rollback is complete… a restart might be required… then afterwards… C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallWMFDist11$\spuninst\spuninst.exe again a restart might be needed…. After that, WMP10 was back, and, my playlists were also back. Unfortunately, some of the album art, that was installed after WMP11 was installed, was removed during the rollback. Any feedback/help regarding using WMP11 in MCE 2005 will be appreciated. -
I installed Media Player 11 on my MCE 2005 system, because of the great way WMP11 handles album art. When I started up MCE, after the WMP11 installation, Media Center began to re-add all my music from the My Music folder and everything seemed fine. However, when I tried to use one of the autoplaylists, ié [music I listen to on weekends, Fresh Tracks, etc] I noticed that all the autoplaylists are gone. There still is a tab for playlists, and my manual playlists are there, but the autoplaylists....Gone!

If you don't plan to use MCE, then remove all MCE updates and hotfixes. KB900325 is Update Rollup 2, which is a MCE update only. Your system will then be the same as XP Pro. Just make sure you keep up to date with the regular XP updates.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875364 Thats just to install SP2 on XP. To install a version of XP that has SP2 sliptreamed, or to slipstream SP2 into XP: just ask or even better, use Google!

To save any further hassles, take out that hard drive, install itt as a secondary drive on a friends PC, scan for an virus/spyware etc and then back up. Or smash everything, and then run around screaming hysterically!!!

Go to www.autopatcher.com. You can download it, in a full post-SP2 pack that will install all updates. You can also download monthly updates that reuire at least 1 previous full pack. You can also download small monthly packs that are stand alone. [ all for free] And finally, you can order a CD/DVD that contains the above. [between $7 and $10]

What exactly is that "full on XP disc" of yours? Might be an XP upgrade disc. Remove it from the drive and place your XP home disc in. It will than confirm thta you are entitled to upgrade and then ask for the upgrade disc. Or, even better, Re-install using your XP home disc.
