What Anti-Virus do you Use/Recommend?
vinodh replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
I've been using Nod32 and Outpost Firewall for about a year, and was fairly happy. Unfortunately, I assumed that those two progs would take care of spyware and browser hijacks. Wrong!!! I'm using Mcafee 2007, with the Personal Firewall, Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus. Cleans up everything. -

[Question] Which is the best win xp 100% optimized?
vinodh replied to edgewise's topic in Windows XP
You might have to make your own "best win xp... ". Use the unattended guide. You will learn alot, and get XP setup the way YOU want it. -
Go here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=63486&hl= Someone else asked this question previously, and I answered it with screenshots of the exact directy structures of both cd's. Should be quite helpful. :-)

The way I understand it, MCE 2005 is XP Pro with the capability of joining a domain removed. The 2nd disc is just a add-on disc that installs the media center components onto XP Pro. So, XP Pro is ver 2002, so MCE 2005 is also ver 2002.

Illegal Pre-Made Windows Setup -> Legal Windows Setup
vinodh replied to Slycer's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
actually, converting xp pro into mce might be illegal but that's discussed here. There's links to the actual MCE files etc. with tutorials. -
I did something similar and ended up accepting that I was an id***!! I used a win98 boot disc to format and forgot that my primary partition was ntfs and the secondary was fat32. That meant that win98 only saw the secondary partition and automatically referred to it as C:\ . Since all my important files was on the secondary partition, I ended up thinking it was c:\ and formatted it and lost everything. Learn't my lesson. So, if you manage to recover your files, please tell us. I need a backup plan. History is known to repeat itself!!

You don't have to. Just Install Vista. It will automatically find the OS on the other partition and add to the vista bootloader. The thing is, if something goes wrong, and it has with me with Vista 5231, it's quite problem to boot to either OS. That's why I use a seperate hard drive for Vista. When i'm done messing around with it, I just plug in my XP drive and everythings back to normal.
-
I don't quite understand. You talk about 20gb/300gb and then suddenly talk about 30gb. Anyway, i'm not sure what you mean by deepfreeze, but if what you meant was: Install Xp on the 20gb partition and apps/games on the 300gb, then yes, it would work. The main advantage is that when you re-install, all your games should be fine on the partition. However, you will have a problem with a few of your apps. Most apps leave lots of files, reg entries etc. during installation. When you format/re-install, the app will look for these files and eventually not run.

[HELP] svchost.exe uses 100% cpu when connected to internet
vinodh replied to vinodh's topic in Windows Vista
Fixed! Removed NOD32 and installed Mcafee Enterprise 8.0i. Thats it. Wierd, though. -
I have a laptop that has it's internet connection shared. It's connected to a 8-port switch. My Pc, with Vista 5384, is connected to the switch, and therefore has internet access. However, whenever, I plug in the pc to the switch, my pc's cpu usage immediately goes to 100%. I tried killing various processes, searching and applying various fixes with no improvement. If I disconnect the lan pysically, I have to restart the pc to get cpu usage back to normal. If I plug it back into the switch/LAN, the cpu climbs to 100% and everything grinds to a halt. The process svchost, is the culprit. Stopping the process only helps for a few seconds. It just restarts with 100% cpu usage by itself. Any help is appreciated.

Media Center 2005 runs fine on 7y old pc
vinodh replied to flupke's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
good point. I always believe that you should only update drivers if you have a problem with your existing ones. Especially if you have older GFX cards. The so called unified drivers from Nvidia and ATI don't necessarily have any newer features for older cards. Also, recently, I was forced to revert to a much older Nvidia driver for a friends PC, because the newer driver caused problems with video playback. -
I hate WORD 2003 SP2, it the most untalented soft in THE WORLD
vinodh replied to vanya203's topic in Microsoft Office
Asking for help with a specific problem, is one thing. Saying MS Word 2003 is crap, is something else. If you have a specific problem eg. the exact error with maybe a screenshot, we'll try and help. Telling everyone that Microsoft makes useless software is just spouting of at the mouth. Fairly pointless, in a forum that tries to help people. Verbal diarrhoea can normally be cured by applying a swift kick to the bollocks! Verbal diarrhoea in MS Word is a whole new problem. -
Media Center 2005 runs fine on 7y old pc
vinodh replied to flupke's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
Here's a link to older Nvidia drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html Should solve your problem. From what i've experienced, the default driver XP loads is quite crappy! -
A pity really. Most of the people here just want to help. When I posted a problem with my laptop, a while back, I got some helpful answers quite quickly. Also, people must remember, this site is not a support service/helpdesk. People here volunteer their help. You might get answers you might not want, or even nothing at all. I say tough. If you want hugs and kisses, go buy a teddy bear. :-) [preferably a Vista 5384 themed teddy bear]

Me want Vista RC2 theme now!! Must work on windows 98 without software!!!!OK!OK!OK! I'll make that a round $20.

here's what the processes look like on the latop that I browse the net with: Here's what the CPU usage looks like at the same time: The above pics show a typical XP PC. However, if the CPU usage in the second pic was 100% then I would have had a problem. The and only time that happened was when this laptop was infected with the Alcan virus. That ended my long term use of Mcafee and promptly caused the installation of NOD32. Never looked back.

Actually, even on Xp, system idle is 98% to 100%. Thats the only process that does. Really, nothing to worry about.

[release] Windows Server 2003 - XP Conversion Pack
vinodh replied to Windows X's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
well, if version 2 could support: 1. Conversion to CD, Version 1 gives an error as mentioned in one of my earlier posts 2. Media Center with eHome Tramciever drivers that can be integrated to CD, then.... Vista can wait!! -
Ok, dude. Calm down. You cannot get a Vista 5384 theme for Xp since Xp does not support Aero. However, if you search google, you can find the Vista Transformation pack 4.0 by WindowsX that will do something similar. Also, try to appreciate it when someone tries to help. Nitroshift was just trying to be decent.

Thanks. That worked perfectly!! I'm running Server 2003 SP1 thats been converted to XP 2003. I folled WBPluto's guide and installed MCE. I then installed the drivers (XP) for my Hauppauge 150 MCE and then plugged the Microsoft Infrared receiver (eHome Tranceiver). The problems i have are as follows: 1. Windows can't find a driver for the receiver 2. After installing Update rollup 2 and the april update, still no driver 3. MCE says that the drive for my tv tuner is malfunctioning etc. Any help is appreciated :-) -
Problems with Server 2003 as a desktop
vinodh replied to Wnxsnowman's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I installed Acronis OS Selector on server 2003 desktop conversion. After the reboot, it bluescreens and keeps rebooting and bluescreen etc. I used the recovery console and used the FIXMBR command. It wrote a new MBR and everything was fine again. I then immediately uninstalled OS selector. Piece of crap! From what i read on other forums, this demo of os selector does this on XP as well. -
Firstly, discussing illegal disks, etc is not allowed. Second, the repair disk should actually be a recovery disk. i.e. it sould restore your laptop to the state it was when you bought it. This means its the same as a clean install. Main difference is that all your drivers, certain apps and utils will already be installed. Thats how it works with my laptop, anyway.

You have much to learn, young Grasshopper3. Vista is only available to MSDN subscribers, beta testers and Microsoft partners etc. Not to the general public. However, a public release will be available soon. I read somewhere that it could be available within a week.
