  1. The thread that Neo referred you to is for XP Pro/Server 2003 ultimate. This thread discusses how to add MCE 2005 to XP Pro volume licence or Server 2003. What you need is a XP Pro cd as well as cd2 of MCE 2005. The MCE key will cause the windows installer to ask for the 2nd MCE cd. If you use a XP Pro key, cd2 will be ignored. That thread has a link in the 1st post to all the MCE files. If i'm not mistaken, you would require an oem xp pro cd, not a volume licence cd for the installer to ask for cd2.
  2. MCE 2005 has SP2 already integrated. All XP updates are also fully compatible with MCE. You will also need to install Update Rollup 2, and then October 2006 Rollup Patch for Media Center 2005 Rollup 2 (KB925766). That should bring you up to date.
  3. I found this: http://www.compatdb.org/ubbthreads.php/ubb...r/178017/page/1 I tried it out a while back, and got VPC to work on XP Home. This link is to get it to work on Win 2000. However, I think it might also work for WinME. Good luck!
  4. I call them "flash drives". No one here calls them pen drive or just "USB". The name most peole here use is "Memory Stick". It seems like they confuse it with a Sony memory stick. Trying to tell peole here, that a memory stick is a completely different device from a flash drive, just results in frustration. BTW: The reason I think that Flash Drive is an appropriate name for these devices, is because they use flash memory for storage and windows treats them as removable drives.
  5. He probably means the background of an open window. i.e a typical window has a plain, grey/white background, that can be changed to any other colour. Replacing that with an image, would obscure some icons and make that window difficult to read. However, that's not the point. Getting it done is.
  6. Go to the section of this forum that dedicated to making a all-in-one multi-boot DVD. http://www.msfn.org/board/Multi_Boot_CD_DVDs_f82.html Discussing illegal versions of Windows as well as were to download it is no allowed here.
  7. Another way, that may be a bit more trickier, is to get the source files from a regular OEM cd, and use the OEM pre-activation tool to extract your bios files from your current install, and then use those files to preserve OEM pre-activation. Then, download Bashrats driver packs and integrate them. A bit overkill, but usefull.
  8. Nice to here! Thanks for keeping us updated. Hopefully, this will help prevent others from having the same problem.
  9. It was mentioned in the 1st post the he had already tried using update rollup 2. He has the same problem with or without that update.
  10. I am interested in doing the same. I have a xp pro VOL licence cd with MCE 2005 integrated, and would like to know how to make a multi-boot dvd that would have XP x64 as well. Any help is appreciated.
  11. You should feel quite fortunate, actually. I also work for the military, and we only recieved approval to use Windows XP last year! Windows 2000 is still being used on the majority of the computers, with NT here and there as well. Judging by that, we should have Vista in 2012!!!!
  12. Check here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...1070&st=400 I posted my reply in the wrong thread!
  13. Use reshacker to extract the specific bitmap. Then replace it with the bitmap you want. Save "winbrand.dll". Overwrite winbrand.dll by copying it to "c:\windows\system32\" Just remember to cancel any windows file protection dialog boxes and do NOT have any xp cd's in your optical drives
  14. The installer starts, to indicate that required parts of office 2003 are missing. An installation source i.e cd or a copy on the hard drive would probably solve this. If it was me, I'd backup everything important (doc's, photos, etc), and perform a restore on the laptop. Hopefully, this would not only restore Windows; required drivers; utilities etc. but also Office 2003. It is possible that Office 2003 is included in the recovery disks. If its not, then you can still copy back your backed up files and purchase Office 2007. Office 2007 won't pose any problems regarding file compatibility between previous versions. Also, you can make a setting change within Office 2007 to tell Office to always save your docs in the 97-2003 file formats: Click on the large round Office button(the 1st button on the far left), the click on "word options" or whatever application you are using, click on "save", in the save documents area, choose 97-2003 docs and then click ok. Finally, consider not rushing off and buying office, for at least a day or so, so that you can get someone to help your daughter fix the problem, and maybe save a quite a bit of cash, by not buying Office 2007. Good Luck!
  15. Seems like there is huge debate regarding this on various forums. So, to prevent this thread going the same way.... 1. There appears to be no difference between the RTM and Retail Versions. 2. However, the version that comes with a new PC, specifically the royalty OEM's will be different with regards to OEM pre-activation. Those disks will allow these pc's to pre-activate vista, while the other two vista versions won't. Also, these disks can also contain OEM specific drivers and OEM branding information. There we go.
  16. Errrrr......So, that means we are not sure if Vista RTM and Vista Retail are the same. i.e Both are identical, or RTM contains less drivers. This is interesting. I wonder if the extra drivers from the retail version can be added to the RTM version? I'll go google a bit regarding the sizes of the disks.....
  17. So, is there some way of using the 64bit version from vista in xp 64?
  18. I disagree. On my office 2007 cd, there's a folder called "office64.en-us". Inside is two msi files and a couple of xml and other files. From what I can gather, the MSI files are the x64 installer files for office 2007 x64. However, I have to test this in an x64 operating system to confirm.
  19. I have an ATI Radeon 9800 All In Wonder GFx card that i'm using with Vista. However, I can't find any drivers that will enable the TV Tuner and video capture capabilities of this card. I have already downloded the latest ATI drivers but those only support the 3d card itself, not the TV Tuner or video capture. Any help is appreciated.
  20. Maybe one of the hardware experts might know more about this: Can you check your bios for any settings regarding dual channel mode or similar. Disable it if it is already enabled. If I am correct, this will allow the 1gb to work since, dual channel mode requires matching pairs of ram.
  21. Maybe you could try removing the two 512's and putting back the 1gb stick. Might help. BTW: Yesterday, I bought a 512 stick for my girlfriends laptop. She had a 512 already, with one more open slot. The plan was to add the 512 and then bask in the glory of 1GB of ram!! Woo!Hoo!!! WRONG!!! When I opened up the install panel, I found two 256mb sticks. Seems like the guys at Acer, when we sent in the laptop for repair, removed the 512 and installed two 256's. So, now we have 768mb of ram. Yayy!!! Lesson: trust no one!
  22. Quite often, with new pc's, file copy errors are a sign of faulty ram. Replacing your ram, or, removing one stick, if you have 2 that is, and then trying to install Windows can help. In other words, try to eliminate one of the sticks. However, be aware that most new PC's are sealed and breaking that seal will void your warranty. I would just take back the PC and request a software reload and checkup. Also, please post the exact error/s so that we could diagnose your problem more accurately. Good luck!
  23. 1. You already have MCE 2005. Checking you PC's properties will always say Windows XP version 2002. Thats the XP version. To confirm your MCE version, check it within MCE itself. Go to this thread for more info: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=89471 2. That also means that installing that update is not going to upgrade your version tp 2005, but will just install update Rollup 2 for MCE 2005. 3. Please confirm if the update disk is really update Rollup 2 for MCE 2005 and also post the exact details of the error you are experiencing. It will make it much easier for us to help you.
  24. Use Windows Server 2003 Noobs Edition. It does what you want automatically. Or maybe not. Actually, I have no idea how to do that. :-)
