Is My Hard Drive Dead? or how to getdata back
bonestonne replied to ideas's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
with the drive disconnected, of course there will be a problem, the system is trying to start something that isn't there. the drivers are probably in your system32 folder. the easiest thing to do is reinstall windows. -
ok, i'll pop out the CMOS battery and put the jumper and clear and i'll check the PSU right now...i'm gonna be pretty upset if it is the PSU...but i may need a new one for the 700's anyway. --------- the PSU doesn't start with the paperclip... great. i'll check it once more tomorrow... now to really find a good PSU to replace it with...i would have hoped that PSU would have lasted longer. i may take it apart as a final check...it erks me.

ok, so i'm sure many of you are at least slightly familiar with the Dual Pentium II Xeon board and rig i have set up...its the one i have in my sig. well, about an hour ago, i cleaned the computer, got dust out, etc...i also took the CPUs apart, and reapplied thermal grease on the inards of it, the L2 cache chip, and the actual CPU chip. well, one CPU had dropped temps significantly, so i took both out because i wanted to make sure the job was crisp, as the first time was a quick thing. well, after cleaning both, reapplying thermal paste and putting them back in the system, i wanted to see if i had dented the temps any more...well, upon pushing the power button, nothing happened. the 300W enermax PSU is the only one i have for the system right now, so i can't try another one with the system, and i don't exactly have another system i can check the enermax with at the moment. being sunday, i don't want to kill a system thus having 2 dead, the third would not suffice for the week for me. is there anything i can do with the system to get it to turn over like it had? i have two new processors coming in the mail for it, and i'm in no mood to have only a potentially good system, but no way to use it. i'm going to need the system for my schools rock show, which has been rescheduled because of recent snow storms. basically, i got the system back together, and i left it unplugged, when i feel like i have the patience to work with it more i'll do so, but i've run out of things to troubleshoot. i've tried the power on jumper, unplugging everything but the board, taking out each CPU to see if it'll start with just one...i even tried a different power button, but nothing. anyone? i have a new PSU selected if the enermax can't power the 700mhz 2M L2 cache CPUs, but i was hoping i wouldn't have to shell out $30 before i get my allowance and birthday rolls around. that and i still havent gotten a refund on the RAM that was stolen as i was told i would be getting. its been almost another week, this guy is killing me.

because in the other computer its not booting. just because a drive works as a slave doesn't mean it'll work as a master in all cases. as its most likely the driver, if the drive has an issue, its got an issue. -
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817163018 ^ thats the PSU i'm aiming for. i ordered a pair of 700Mhz 100mhz FSB 2M L2 cache last night to replace the 450/100/512k processors, which should arrive sometime this coming week. the PSU is 580W, $30, and has everything i need and its all shown. along with having what i need, its got good reviews. the current 300W thats powering that computer will replace the 480W thats in here right now, because the 480W will be used to power the AMD system i hope to finish by the end of the year. i was aiming to stay away from lighting, but i think i can take red in this case. i'll also try to remove the fan guards, as i don't stick my hand in my case while the computers on, and it'll help airflow. i went through a lot of PSUs to find that one, i may have looked at it at first and just thought it was unnessecary at the time. i was originally thinking of getting an Apevia, however the reviews they got were less than appealing, and this one is more powerful with better reviews, and will definately support the 900/100/2M if i ever get far enough as to get a pair of those and the BIOS that allows me to use them.

first time S-ATA use...any tips?
bonestonne replied to bonestonne's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
everything has been ordered, and its all at his house now...sadly its been snowing all day and since his driveway is quite steep, i'm not sure i'll be able to do it tomorrow...we shall see. but he's got a floppy drive..i'm not sure if its permanent, but its there if we need it. i would integrate the drivers, but i'd rather not take the risk of it not starting...i've had a few too many nlited XPs sort of just stop after a while because files didn't burn, and theres no turning back...it'll depend on the situation for what actually goes. if its easier to integrate at the time, that will happen. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813127017 ^thats the board he has. -
first time S-ATA use...any tips?

sweet. hopefully by the end of this year i'll have enough [roughly $1200] to buy my own new setup.... my only concern is that i want mine to be a server setup running XP...partly because i need all the room with what i do, Audio/Video editing, 3D rendering, and a touch of gaming...i'm looking at dual 603 Xeons, but i dunno..by then i'm hoping they're cheaper, and boards are set up better... i'm kinda sick of IDE now..i want to rock this house with SATA drives in RAID. my friends computer wont get that, but mine will, i want to minimize the chance of windows crapping out. -
ok, one of my friends is building a new computer...all the parts are at his house, and we plan on putting it all together on saturday...among its layout, its a 2.4Ghz core 2 duo, 2 gigs of RAM, 300GB SATA-1 drive, mATX board and case, Creative X-Fi for audio editing, all that jazz. now, i'm just beginning to save up for a rig like that for myself, so since i have no previous experience with installing an OS on an SATA drive, i just want to make sure i'm doing it right the first time. the board should come with a driver on either floppy or CD that i put on before the installation starts? he's going to be using XP, probably slightly nLited, i'll work on its details at his house as to what will stay on the OS, what service pack he wants, all that jazz. all i need to do is get the SATA driver recognized by setup and it'll go smoothly from there? and also in case he asks, if he were to put in another SATA drive, it would just be plugging it in, nothing else right? i feel silly asking it, but i guess its because i don't want to not have an answer for his multitude of questions...this isn't my first build, but it'll be his, so i'm expecting questions.

ooh ok... now i'm split between several different things. it turns out that the second 512MB stick of ram i wanted was stolen as the sellers apartment was robbed...i'm being refunded the roughly $27 and thats making me wonder what i should do. my birthday is at the end of the month, and i'll be getting maybe $100...so by april i'll have maybe around $140 or so. what do you think i'd be better off doing? 1) i could find a 2+GHz AMD Athlon XP on ebay, and buy a scythe katana or something similar to it, and get my AMD board running after getting some DDR RAM. 2) buying the better PSU and trying out PIII Xeon 700MHz processors on my server. [i refer to it as a server because its definately no PC]. right now i'm split between getting processors with a high L2 cache, or having a higher clock rate and FSB. if i got the AMD, it would replace my Pentium 4 system until the summer, when i could get another case and keep it in school for working there. i use the server for recording music, the AMD would be taking over that in terms of portability, as i would take the AMD system around instead of the server then. right now having bronchitis and a load of stress i don't want to pick the wrong one and be set back, so opinions will help. well, tomorrow i'll be giving my PII Xeons a beating...i hope the don't give up on me...they'll record my 3 hour radio show, which was why i want the higher speed, higher cache processors for it. however, the lack of RAM is not helping, as the $10 steals i got are so hard to find.

yes it is. i've been reading into older stuff about the board, its recommended to have no less than 350W for the 550Mhz versions and higher, but with lower clocked processors, a good 300W will work fine. i've been getting by with the 300 and have no complaints, but i'm looking into an upgrade for it [700Mhz CPU, 2M L2cache]. i'll look into the PSU about the 6pin AUX...in the picture [and being stressed out and dyslexic right now] i think i saw that connector, but only managed to count 5 holes. if anyone is familiar with an adapter for a 6pin AUX cable, that would work too...
-
Ok, i've been searching for a new PSU that i'm going to need, but i can't find any that match my requirements for the server i have. what i really need is 20pin ATX, at least 6 molex connectors [i can get splitters if needed] but it really needs to have the 6Pin AUX connector. without the 6pin AUX connector my board will not start. its not the PCI-E 6 pin, its the older one with 3 ground, 3v+, 3v-, and 5v..at least i'm pretty sure its that. it absolutely has to be 350W or more... if anyone can find one it would be much appreciated, as for the price, it just has to be like 50 or less if possible, but i'll take a look at any that are found.
-
you may want to also check the UPS...i've used a UPS before, and the issue with it was that it would switch itself to battery very often. on battery, it wouldn't start at all because it would have live input from the wall, and battery was reserved for when there was no power coming in. its worth a check, but if the PSU doesn't budge, its normally dead.
-
ooh, ok...well, the system is using it, so i can't complain much...i would have been more worried if it was incompatible. in speedfan i've also noticed that it says 72bit in it, and the others are 64bit i think, that might be it too...well, i'm hoping the next one doesn't do the same thing to me. about that second one...i've got to send another email to them, i ordered it two weeks ago and its still not here.

well, it would be tricky to reinstall XP on a dual boot machine. 1) XP likes to format the whole disk unless you're sneaky and prevent that from happening 2) you'll loose any data you have on there unless you can access the partition with Suse, which is doubtable, linux doesn't recognise NTFS without a special driver, and you'd have issues with it even if you could see the partition. if you have an XP install CD, the only way to make it work would be keeping XP on the same partition it was on. was your boot menu messed up any? i remember trying to fix my friends computer with an issue like this, we ended up formatting the whole drive and reinstalling from scratch. part of the problem with this is that when you dual boot you need to install windows first, and if you have linux on there before XP, basically all you can do is format the whole disk. you could try making it a slave in another computer that runs windows to recover data, but the best and easiest way out of this is a full format and reinstall.

the female end that plugs onto the motherboard is what you should change. theres a small plastic tab that prevents you from removing the wire, all you need to do is use a needle to lift the pin up slightly to pull the wire out. you have to be gentle about it, but you do need to apply a good amount of pressure to get that wire out. also, keep track of polarities [positive and negative leads], if they're marked, then insert them as needed, if not, just try your best, its not that hard to do it, the time i did it was my first, and it went without a hitch.
-
most cases aren't designed like that anymore, but i think i know what you're talking about. if you're careful, take a sewing needle, and use it to life the tabs of the large plastic base, and pull the wires out and move them as needed. i had to do that when i threw together a setup for my dads friend...i ended up not being able to use most of the pins [i could only use the power and IDE light] but that worked. the only thing i could find small enough to do the job was a sewing needle, just be careful, i poked myself a few times doing it. all the cases i've bought and setup have everything with seperate leads, basically to prevent that problem.

if you want PC stuff, look at audacity, maybe even Adobe Audition, thats what i use, both are very good.
-
if your wifi connection times out, disable IEEE checking [or whatever its called] and the problem will be solved guaranteed. i know from experience.
-
i think that floppies have lost their usage [compared to what they used to be], but its not gone, as most cases still come with bezels for them, and even if you don't use it, having one at least lying around can be the benefit of the doubt, BIOS flashing, boot disks..that sort of thing...windows still makes boot floppies, or at least has them available...the most recent one i know of for sure is boot disks for Windows XP Sp1.

AMD is known to have poor driver support for XP, which is partly why i'm stalling my Athlon build. maybe someone who's running an AMD could shed light on this, i'm an intel buff, but i know about the driver issues..you may want to look into it.

each DIMM slot supports up to 512MB of RAM per slot. i've read the manual of the board, it wasn't incredibly specific about the RAM and how it had to be timed. when i have free time i'll run Aida 32 and then System Mechanic Pro and see how that goes...the RAM says its ECC, but the other RAM isn't labeled if its ECC or Non-ECC. i've tried running the RAM alone, but the system wont post. it shows up in Speedfan, so its recognized. this is an interesting situation for me... if i can find the specs myself i'll read it thoroughly...its a Supermicro S2DGU board, so if anyone can find something on it its greatly appreciated.

Ok, so i've been trying to overhaul my old computer, and its gone well, i've orded 1gb total of ram for it, 512 came today, another 512 is in the mail [or it had better be]. the 512MB stick of SD RAM that came today guaranteed no DOA [and stuck to it] appears to be write-only with this board. thats fine with me, because my computer is using it, i know because its performing much better, not only that, but its more responsive. is there a way to change the state from read only to also write? in bios it appears as 640MB. theres the 512mb stick, a pair of 256mb sticks, and a single 128mb stick. am i just stuck with using it but not 100% to its potential, or is there a way to 'unleash the beast' so to speak, and get the full 1152MB or, should i just stick where i am. i'm looking for the safer route here, so if its not possible, i can always pass the ram on in time [i have newer computers that can use it too]. i've had the problem before, but never like this. in speedfan, it shows up as being write only, and its recognized as a 512mb PC133. the DIMM slots on the board only work at 100mhz, but the 256mb sticks are also PC133, so its slightly confusing. i can't complain as its helping, but i would like to try to squeeze out all possible usage.
-
as long as the board is the same, it'll be nothing. similar to swapping the box a windows 98 drive is in...maybe a few installations, but it'll run the same.
-
i've removed IE and never had a problem with Comodo... i want to try this new firewall...anything that puts a dent in usage is helpful.

one of many reasons to not use automatic updates? [not to mention IE] can't say..i've had to work with computers in school, i've never seen that happen in even a full version with SP2. is it stopping you from viewing/installing and silly updates? i guess if it is thats a problem...does that second one load after a while or is it an endless process? now some of you might realize why i update one specific things by hand...i don't want anything messing up my rigs.
