  1. i lack the space to backup...i have an 80GB drive, a 40GB drive, and a 400GB external. i have my music backed up, however i do not have the music that was given to me backed up...partly because theres so much total, and also because i can't just format the drive, and say i'm done...the external backs up my music, and a few other files i have, but i haven't gone crazy with it. besides, it would take about 13 DVDs to back up my music completely...and honestly..i'm the music director, i get new music too often to be constantly burning more DVDs or CDs...its easier for me to just work slowly...50GB of music isn't as easy to work with as it sounds, especially only have 2 drives that can really hold it.
  2. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814145139 so far thats the best one that i can see being really good for my needs. it will work in either of my computers that require AGP, and its got DVI which can help me for any upgrades in the future. one of my computers has a 3v AGP slot, the other has a 1.5, so i can't just pick any card i want... just as a strange question, if i wanted 64 bit graphics or something higher, would it require a 64bit system? i do want the best possible graphics without pushing it too much, but if i can't get 64bit graphics thats fine, i'm just wondering partly because it would be a much more expendable card...32 is fine with me, because it beats the 24bit thats onboard on my other computer, but that runs linux, i don't need all that much with it.
  3. ooo, ok, yea, i understand the 98 thing...my sisters computer, she's got this old one that runs 98, and whenever it boots it runs scandisk...can't seem to figure out why, but i suppose eventually if i have a problem again, put the drive in while it runs...theoretically that would work, but only trying it would say for sure, no? but yes, i am also current working on putting it all in one folder, and now when the drive starts syncing, i avoid having other things running, usually when the drive is plugged in when windows starts, it doesn't have that issue, but i can't guarantee it.
  4. uhm, well, i'm really not interested in Vista at all, and don't plan on getting it at all. it hasn't supported much of anything i have now, i'm not spending a fortune to see something compatible. my P3 celeron thats rated at 1.1GHz and is 5 years old, and it ran vista with my [extreme backup] geforce fx5200 PCI. didn't run incredibly well, but it ran...it gives me a new light to "Vista Compatible". my computer was made when XP was still just at SP1...sp2 was another story. i wouldn't be surprized if this system can run vista easily. XP is my style.. @ ripken: this isn't a new system, this is the system in my sig. none of my systems are new really...i don't have the money for it, and my parents would see it as a waste to get a new system....thats why i need to save up plenty to buy my own RAM for this thing...and thats also why i have so little right now. i'm looking for a new card that can just make this easier, not a whole new system. as much as a new system would help, its not in the question, thats why a 7900 is out of the question, it was never made into AGP, therefore, it doesn't help me much.
  5. this new card wont be for the P4 system, it'll be for the dual PII Xeon. i actually did look at both cards, i was just a little worried about it working in this system with a 3.3v AGP slot. the P4 system has a 1.5v AGP card, which is why i'm looking for a universal AGP card, so if i ever have to, i can put the new card into the P4 system. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814141038 ^that was the card that i had more interest in, partly for the expendability of DVI, but the picture has the type of AGP that would only suit my P4 system. also, the last question i had was if i could get a 64bit graphics card, or if i wouldn't be able to support 64bit graphics..i haven't really kept a close eye or mind on graphics cards, so i don't really know, but i was very interested in getting 64bit or 128bit graphics if possible for video editing [provided i'm able to].
  6. ok, thanks a bunch for the info punto, if you get the chance, could you link me a card you think i should get, i was looking at a bunch more, very few AGP cards that i've seen that fit the build are universal AGP...quite odd the way that most are the type that doesn't match this board...>.<
  7. ok, so my current graphics card is pretty old, and i really just want to put it back in my P4 system, so i've been looking into pretty good cards that i'd be able to use in the future if this system ever quits on me. i saw the ATi Radeon 9550 at a local store for about $80, and thats pretty good for a graphics card, seeing as i have an old system, it needs to be AGP, universal if possible [i don't want to go PCI and i have no PCI-e] and it has 256MB of RAM, VGA/DVI-I/S-Video outputs...and its really nice for the money. i was googling it and reading reviews for it, and overall i see it as a really good replacment for the Asus V-7100 GeForce MX/MX 400 that i'm running now. i was wondering if anyone could tell me a lot about the cards, specifically pros/cons because no where i've been has said anything bad about the card, or if theres a better card in the same price range [it needs to be less than $100, and no less than 128MB of RAM...right now my current card has 32, and it will be slow at times [specifically at youtube, i need to reduce the video size for a smooth playing clip]. any comments and referrals are greatly appriciated...i don't want to go off getting a card, and it turning out to hardly do what i need it to. i don't game, but i do edit music, and i will be working with video soon, so i still need at least a bit of performance out of it. im trying to save up for a number of new parts for my computer, becuase its hardly at its potential right now, but i'm trying not to break the bank in the process.
  8. ok. well, as i said before, the ones in the freeware section didn't help me. well, i did manage to get it back. [as messed up as it is, twice] my sister bought me Get Data Back for NTFS, and it did the trick...that took me about 4 hours. ok, so now i have all the music back. my computer boots, and during boot, CHKDSK effing runs....i finish booting, look in the folder...all the music is there. IN 5 MINUTES. so yes...i'm not sure what had triggered checkdisk...does anyone know how i would manually get it to run instead of it being a lottery game during boot? thanks for all the help.
  9. undelete plus doesn't see anything on my external drive thats recoverable. so far only the ones that you need to pay for even see the music there. i'll let you all know if i find something better. tried using the undeleter in system mechanic pro, but for some reason it wont allow me to use that part of the program...i'll have to look into that.
  10. ok, i'm gonna look into it, but if i don't find anything by tuesday night, i'll talk to the person who gave me the music to see if he'd mind replacing it.. i doubt he will, because he said to let him know if i had any problems with it, but i know its recoverable, and i was wondering if i would be able to do it myself. and this has given me incentive to start saving up for a data recovery tool... theres one that i found, stellar & phoenix fat/ntfs data recovery...and its pretty solid...its showing me everything, and that i should have 53.6GB of music, it gives me the option to recover all deleted files, but since its a trial, i can't.
  11. ok, so i have this 400GB western digital external drive, and i had all my music on it seperated into two folders...well, i turned it on, and while it was synchronizing with my computer, my computer crashed, and then when i went to go through the music, about 22GB of music is not there at all. i went through a good number of data recovery tools, only one so far has at least shown me that its possible to retrieve them. the problem is that the program costs $45 and i don't quite have that kind of money [being in highschool]. it is possible to get it back, but i want to know if anyone knows of a program that would help me here. i've checked the free/open source software list thats in this forum, and non of them have helped me. the program i used that worked for me is Data Doctor Recovery NTFS [the drive was formatted by the previous owner, and i dont quite have the space to back it up locally and change the format. any help is greatly appriciated, as this is quite stressful, and i have enough to worry about right now [i have a 3 page english paper due monday] thanks in advance
  12. the way i read it at first, i thought it was a choice, my mistake. i was using the latest version of speedfan, 4.31, and it only had the HDD temps right. it said i had two remote temps at 67 and 78 C...but, when i used MBM5, it said the remote temps were 62 and 66 C...and it wasn't after anything, i had them both open at the same time.
  13. uhhhh. speedfan is not the most reliable program for this, i'll tell you that now. try motherboard moniter..to be quite honest, speedfan told me that i had two remote temps, that were both blazing hot, and they actually werent. so i can't say its a reliable program. although that fan, you may want to replace it very soon, because it could cause sudden death like no other. http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...rctic%20Cooling i see that as the best replacement, partly because as good as fanless systems are, i don't trust the airflow, and also because the way some graphics coolers are made, i don't think it quite does the job effectively, but i wouldn't reject it for a system. i prefer the arctic cooling freezer 64, but the NV Silencer would be just as good when it comes down to keeping the system cool, i just don't like the way the plastic hoods can get hot, and then your just blowing hot air that doesn't go away.
  14. have you tried formatting it as an internal hard drive, then putting it in the external enclosure? you may try partitioning software because windows isn't always the most reliable.
  15. thats interesting, because i have a computer set up with fans very similar to that, and i've never had that problem. is the CPU usage unusually high at times when you check the task manager? if so, you may need to leave it off for a few hours to let the RAM loose charge. i don't think i've ever heard of a heat issue on a computer like that, they usually cool very efficiently with a 120mm and a side fan.
  16. if you can touch it, the sensor can be off...what are you using to get the temps? at first i thought my computer had a heat issue, as much of a heat issue as it is, none of the problems have actually been caused by heat.
  17. 1. which power wire should i use, the floppys or the regular ide hd power cord well, all IDE hard drives only work with the 4 pin molex plug. a floppy drive power cable wont even plug in to a hard drive. as for the SATA settings, i can't help you there, i prefer IDE as it requires little to setup...you may need SATA drivers for the HDD to work properly, but someone more familiar with SATA could give a better answer.
  18. it looks good now, i'm thinking of getting UV cables/cathode...depends on the money flow...i'm a pretty cheap DJ right now for my friends [only because i don't have quite everything i should, so i can't really easily charge much [no PA system]] eventually i'll really trick this thing out...running a pair of PII's isn't as bad as some people would think...its just as fast as my celeron, with more RAM...thats a plus
  19. i was at staples yesterday, and i was looking at a laptop, it said it had 1.96GB, which is a similar issue to this could it possibly be graphics aperature[sp?]?
  20. you know, that actually happened here...i was able to get online, but no one else could...i'm not sure what caused it, try reseting all routers, letting them sit unplugged for a night or at least a couple hours...if all else fails, try restoring it to factory defaults, check the manual for that, it may be holding the reset button for x number of seconds...then change it back to how you had it, and it 'should' work. can't say for sure whats going on with you.
  21. the issue would only exist if the connection is encrypted and you have a poor connection, or driver for the card or w/e recieves your signal. i used to have the problem here at home, but when i moved the computer down here a lot closer to the router, i didn't have a single problem with the encryption...it could also be signal to noise ratio, if theres too much noise over the signal...all can be monitered by the connection manager that came with the card or driver for it...and if not, you may be able to see it in Network Connections, but i can't guarantee it.
  22. aero requires 32bit graphics, i don't think there will ever be an easy way to change that. aero glass doesn't even look all that great to me...i prefer the classic style.
  23. 40,000....thats plenty, i would know, all of my music is hi-fi, although its .mp3, most are just of CD, a few are remastered vinyls. well, if you really want some good storage and backup, RAID wont do squat for you. get 4 750GB drives, don't put the in raid, have them as internal drives. don't boot off any of them. your IDE0 drive [aka the one you boot off] should be any other drive of your choice. if windows ever gets corrupt, change the drive thats booting, and not a single song will have been touched. i have about 22GB of music [which will be growing fast soon] because i work at a radio station. i understand the importance of backups, and how many are useful [we have one drive, and one server, and whenever it goes down, we're stuck on CDs] being the music director, i take it as a personal duty to create ways to get around that issue. if you want to do some intense backing up of all that music, you'll want to use JBOD, and that will take no less than eight 500GB drives. in all honesty, 2TB is a bit hard to really do, i would wait a while, and give the 1TB hard drives time to become more known. then, just get 4, run them in JBOD, and you'll have 2TB of storage, and 2TB of backup.
  24. is there onboard video to use? if so, i highly recommend it for this install...[and all future installs]
  25. you know, thats a pretty lame thing to say...have you seen another company throw a 1TB drive out yet? its the first i've seen. not to mention i'm running a pair of deskstars...haven't shown a hint of failure, even though one drive is damaged [thanks to an HP tower].
