it was on my mind, however the problem is that i'm so sick of having used/old parts, i want a new thing. and something that i can use later for another build later. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819116254 - CPU - $99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...82E16813131032R - mobo - $53 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231054 - RAM - $60 thats the build that i can see as feasable...by tomorrow i should have around $150 for it, however if i do buy it, it will be all at once. also, does anyone think that a different CPU would be better? also, i'll need a PCI-E x16 graphics card to run it, i don't have any here...what would you say would work well? i need it to be cheap, and a lack of gamin means that performance just needs to be enough to run basic apps. it will completely replace the P4 system. i found the problem, however its one that can continue to occur in the future. all i'm doing now is ripping/preparing CDs for school, and its a very important job right now. if there will be an intel price drop, this system could get cheaper too, so i'll likely wait a little, but running this perticular system for much longer wont help me. i'll probable get some el cheapo case for it, and give it to my sister. if theres a part of the system that i could probably get better, do say...this is a self bought thing, i'm not relying on my parents for this, i know they wont spring. i have 3 computers, and they seem to think that my 1.1ghz celeron with 256mb of RAM is all i need.

the system my friend got came out to be around $800, so 500 could be a stretch..you should wait for the summer for the price drops.

its some aBit mobo...i'll have to look in the system to find out the boards model. or i can check later, but most likely not today. also, the PSU is in a chamber sort of area above the board where the DVD drive is, and since its closed, and screws into th back, not having the system here where i can see it means that i can only guess. i'll talk to him about what he's got in the way of funds for it, and then see what happens. this is very off topic, but how come LGA775 processors don't have pins on them, and its all on the board? would the pressure damage them or something? i noticed it during the build, and as its nothing i've ever seen before i thought it was weird.

ok, before theres bloodshed or something silly like that, the current PSU he has is 350W...since the Seasonic is definately 1up'ing every octopus there is, can we maybe find a modular one? i talked to him about it just a few minutes ago, he's been using his old computer for the time being, as he doesn't want to hurt his system atm. its in a mATX case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16811108043 500 or up seems to be a good wattage, so i guess thats alright to stick to, also, he has 1 optical drive, one floppy, one hard drive, and requires the following: 1xSATA 1xmolex 1x24pinATX 1x4pinCPU 1xfloppy[he wants one, i'm not arguing] thats what he requires...if theres a good PSU that gives out about that much, it will be very helpful, especially if its modular, because i don't want to have to try and stuff all the cables somewhere, because its a small case, and that could get tricky..also, i'm unsure at the moment of how to get the current PSU out, i'm guessing slide it toward the front of the case? instead of arguing about a PSU, why don't we all just go treasure hunting for a 500w modular PSU? if it was my computer, i'd want it kept well, since its not mine, i want it kept perfect, the less arguing the better, different people have different experiences with hardware. as the cheif engineer at my schools radio station always says, "agree to disagree, and we'll all get along better."

my plans are dual booting windows XP and Ubuntu SE [modded 6.10] i would like to have AGP, or at least onboard graphics, as i'm not in a position to buy a new graphics card to go with the system. it will be hauled back and forth used for audio recording, mixing, editing and DJ work. sound will be either onboard or through a Soundblaster Live... i was looking on newegg earlier, found a pentium D that was around 2.9Ghz dual core with 2x 2mb L2 cache, something i'll need, an AsRock mobo with AGP, and 1gb DDR2 ram, and a 120GB SATA1 HDD. total comes out to be about 250 now, which will take the summer to get together. by then hopefully there will be a price drop so i can get a C2D..but i'm not too into which CPU i get, i just need a large L2 cache, and a quick FSB, fastest isnt necessary. programs i use are photoshop 7, although i've been trying to find a barebone CS2 for cheap, Audition, which is my main recording program, i don't game much at all, so nothing too extravagant. in linux, the only program that comes close to needing power would be be audacity...i don't plan on using any 3d effects until i figure them out completely...i have beryl installed on my linux box, it could be the fact that its onboard video, nothing happens when i trigger it. meh. the L2 cache is whats important for me.

ok, heres what you do, you create your XP in nLite, and you DO NOT removing Manual Install and Upgrade. copy the files onto a flashdrive, external hard drive, whatever you want, copy them to the laptop drive, use Daemon tools to install it. if you can't, get an external optical drive...if all else fails, you could get a PCMCIA adapter? and use that for USB or whatever? i realize you have no drives to use to help you in the installation, but i don't get why you can't just get an external drive to use? it can't be that hard.

i gave in, I'm now using a PCI Soundblaster Live CT4780...which model are you using? also, have you tried drivers from creative? also, it could be the apps, not the card. itunes will kill an AWE64, where winamp wont, as much. i use winamp because its almost universal, in linux theres a program called XMMS, basically the exact same thing. itunes its a resource hog, you might as well use XP, and get a Soundblaster.

no, if this system is tanking, i'll be upgrading to a system with DDR. i've looked into RD RAM in the past looking to get more for this system, and have not had any luck whatsoever finding it for a decent price. i have no computers that have SATA, and no new processors....i guess this should be moved to the hardware section now... if i save up every penny possible, could someone propose a build that i can use? i'm aiming at new everything, but budgeted. RAM, CPU, HDD are my main concerns. i have a 420W PSU, i can buy adapters for a SATA drive, as i'm not going after a new PSU right now, and thats about it, i can use everything else. i just need a mobo [LGA775 preferred] a decent CPU [no celeron, dual core is better, but not required] and i guess no less than 80gigs, i can always use my external for more.

ok, so i've got this somewhat old Pentium 4 computer, not all that much in the way of anything in terms of specs, 1.4GHz, 256MB RD-RAM...just that i guess. it seems that more and more recently the computers been crashing, rebooting, and then right after the HP logo screen its been telling me theres no OS...normally if i wait a few minutes or hours, it'll work again, or if i simply unplug the HDD it'll work, but its worrying me. i have no DDR ram, therefore my K7S5A Pro doesn't work right now, so i can't even replace the system. its in a case i bought, and i don't want to just set it aside right now, but what am i to do? is there anyone who can do one of several things: 1) find permanent solution 2) offer some DDR RAM [184pin, 2.5v] at a low cost or just a small amount to get by 3) give me my sanity back, as its been coming and going lately. i only have two working systems at the moment, this one, my linux box, [1.1Ghz celeron, 256MB SD-RAM] and my workstation, which is upstairs, runs windows 2000 [1152MB SD-RAM with only 640MB fully recognized]. i need a new faster computer as my needs are starting to move away from low CPU speed to something that can take a real beating. i have an Athlon XP 2200+, K7S5A Pro motherboard that i want to test, as it would replace the P4 system, but i have no ram for it, and the SD RAM slots are doing nothing for me, and i need a better system. buying a new one is no option, so any help would be very much apreciated. i fear its the hard drive, as a few months ago it got caught in a drive cage, and the filmstrip that gives the motor power was ripped out, and the slot it goes into was at a 90 degree angle. not off, but close. i was afraid i would loose the drive, and i guess its happening now. i need to put the majority of my money into a new hard drive, but RAM, i can't afford to get new, so maybe someone can help. any kind of answer will help.

ok, i recently built my friends computer, E6600, 2GB DDR2 ram, 300GB hard drive, creative soundcard for a studio and everything. when i built it, i installed speedfan to make sure the system was alright, and it was far from it. all the voltage rails were very low, and today he told me that it had just shut off on him. i do believe the PSU is a full size ATX, however its possible that its a mATX size. i'm not sure of the Wattage on what he has now, but i do know he's gonna need a new one soon, real soon. any suggestions that people have on what brand, wattage etc will be much appreciated. as for price, just try to keep it under $100, i don't want to run him out of house and home for this rig, although i do know he has a fair amount to use.

works like a charm, thanks a bunch cluberti

i used to use one...just unistall all drivers you used to have, then put in the card. after it recognizes it and your system is fine, just restart. if it doesn't work, you need to do something very important. go into your BIOS [aka: Setup] and try to find a setting called IRQ5. there are two modes for it PCI/PnP and ISA/EISA. it needs to be set for ISA/EISA for it to work. hope that helps...it took me forever to fined it, hopefully it will save you some trouble.

is there anyone who knows how to set up a wireless connection with windows 2000? i need to take my workstation back upstairs, where it can only get to a wireless network. i've got a belkin USB wireless adapter that it does recognise, and i have drivers for it, but i can't find a way to connect to my network. if it matters, i do have it encrypted, but i cannot for the life of me figure it out myself. this is my only problem with windows 2000, hopefully someone knows the answer...the adapter is compatible with windows 2000, but maybe theres something i'm not realizing.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g142/bon.../screenshot.jpg i want to thank everyones input on the fixes for windows 2000, thats a combination of 256k color fix, revolution pack and Transparency. the effects of all of it can be show, and i think it looks great. maybe if theres a way to replace the Removable Device, Audio and Internet Connection icons in the future it'll look even better than it is. also, does anyone know if theres a program to change the 2000 bootscreen? thats another think i like to customize with my installations. other than that i'm satisfied completely. i think that if you can't run XP well on a system and you go to windows 2k, these programs should be a must have.

ooff. this rig is using Windows 2000 Professional SP4 with 32bit fixes the computer next to it runs an nLited XP Pro Sp1 my little computer upstairs runs Ubuntu SE [tweaked 6.10] and the AMD system that is leaving tomorrow runs an nLited XP Sp2 if i ever get my last AMD system running, it'll dual boot Ubuntu SE/XP Pro, if i'm really into it i'll try getting Darwin to work and triple booting.

its no different than with the old slot1 type processors...2.8v slots and 5/12v slots...they wouldn't run in alternate slots, instead the system would play dead. if you had the correct BIOS update, sometimes the CPU would take the voltage.

what motherboard do you have? if it doesn't support the technology, it wont work. look up the specs from the board, and it will give you a list of compatible processors. because a motherboard is socket 775 doesn't mean it will run a Core 2 Duo.
-
256k tweaked did it! thanks a lot. this system is actually my main, and now it looks great. i had some trouble copying it, could someone post the exact way to use CMD to replace the file? i ended up putting the drive in my XP computer and switching there. too bad i can't hide inactive icons though... would integrating the explorer.exe from XP make a difference? i mean how possible would it be?
-
i can't get a good screenshot at the moment, i will asap, but i installed the revolutions pack 2.0, and it had helped, but marginally. the icons by the clock don't seem to be affected by the pack, they're still looking bad. is there something i'm not doing? for example, i pick an icon to use in winamp for the taskbar, and it looks crystal clear in winamps window, but by the clock it looks like crap. same with avast, trillian and comodo. also, is there any way to completely integrate just 32bit icons? like internet connection, sound, USB device, etc? it would look pretty cool...but so far, i'm more than satisfied...my system specs are in teh sig. taking hardly any sources that i'm seeing/noticing. oh, and before i forget, theres a program called Glass2k, it enables you to make any window transparent, it has no effect on the icons whatsoever, simply amazing.

oh well...to think, that computer is a socket 423...old school 'ish

yea, i feel that way...i have a dual head graphics card on one of my computers that i would totally move around just to use dual....at my schools radio station i was using two dell 17" LCDs while doing some recording/editing, you have no idea how nice it was...then i came home. i have a big CRT upstairs, but its too much to bring down here and use....i wish i had it...audio editing on two monitors is amazing, stretching out the waveform so much that you see the entire thing...gah.. oh well...all in due time...i either save up for two monitors or i save up for a new computer..i'm split. -

i'm trying to throw the system together so it replaces the P4, but it might need DDR for it, in which case i'll need to get enough money to buy some....if i get DDR, i'll be getting a pair of 512s, as i'm sure thats the most that the K7S5A can handle...it'll then be my editing computer...my server handles editing ok, but theres seems to be this issue with sound, during playback in winamp, or anything that plays audio, it seems to give this strange crackly effect, it bugs me beyond belief because it happens with any soundcard i put it, and however i play with the BIOS, it doesn't go away. -

if one had to try vista, they should go to a local computer store [like compUSA or whatever] and take a look at their display computers that run vista...i played games on it for over an hour and they didn't care, and since i didn't care to have vista, no troubles at all. if you really wanted to have vista, you should have gotten beta versions when they were out. i don't see the fuss in vista, but i do like the accomplishment of such a small ISO. -
they're probably running 60mm fans, in which case there will be no easy replacement for silencing or quieting down. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g142/bon...er/IMG_0856.jpg that was my solution, however the board is not properly wired...thats an 80mm fan that i mounted on the 60mm holes.. 60mm fans were screamers just like the 40's...your best bet might just be a whole new cooler for them.

ooh, i need to update...i've played musical cases/computers so i have 2 rigs down here. The dual Pentium II/III server has been revamped with a few new fun toys, the Pentium 4 tower was given a new case. i'll start with the server. Dual Pentium III Xeon processors 700Mhz 100mhz FSB 2Mb L2 cache 1152MB of SD RAM Hitachi Deskstar 41.1GB right now just one, but the other one i have will go in when i have to part with my first AMD system. Matrox G450 Millenium Dual head AGP graphics card, slot is only 2x, so its a little restricted, but its not performance based, so no biggie. Soundblaster Live soundcard, better than the ISA Soundblaster, but not permanent in the setup. Benq 16x DVD+/-RW "Superdrive" [this is an old drive too, surprisingly] PCI USB2.0 card Its housed in the Coolermaster Elite 330, no lighted fans or cathodes, just a simple setup. Pics: ^the whole setup, this pic is probably from before i got the G450 ^troubleshooting ^fancy duct idea i came up with the other rig: Pentium 4 1.4Ghz [socket 423] 256MB RD RAM [this stuff is impossible to find around here] 52x CD-RW 16x DVD drive GeForce MX/MX 400 32Mb graphics card Linksys WMP11 WiFi card 80GB Hitachi Deskstar Apevia X-Dreamer with side window Pics: ^general exterior shot ^ghetto GPU HSF setup ^ghetto'd up CPU HSF ^this is a very weird angle, thats looking up to the top of the case. ------------- other than the fact that the servers got this weird thing about giving me bad audio no matter what i do, it runs fine. the P4 rig is effectively silent except for a hint of turbulance that you hear. my other system is this 1.4Ghz AMD rig that i threw together, 512mb of RAM, my other 40gb hitachi...it'll be getting my old maxtor drive and going back to my friend. my other other system is a linux box, 1.1ghz celeron, 256mb of RAM, 20gb Barracuda, onboard everything but LAN, which is covered by a trendnet PCI LAN controller. and the final system that i'm having issues with is: ECS K7S5A Pro board, AMD Athlon XP 2200+, right now 128MB SD RAM [to get it working] and my old ATi Rage 2C for basic graphics. to date, the system has not ever reached post for me. i have no DDR to try with it.
