i have similar problems with the card i'm using now, but it just turns out the bracket was put on in a very strange manner, so if you move the case the wrong way it comes out of the slot just enough to not make contact...check how its seated, theres no issue there, it may be dead or dying.

Geforce4 mx440 (PCI) not being recognised by PC
bonestonne replied to hougtimo's topic in Hardware Hangout
just to be curious, was it actually new or open box, or from a person selling it? also, what was cooling it? it takes really poor cooling to kill a graphics card..my fx5200 just has a big heatsink on it [still working on a fan] but i haven't had an issue with it at all. -
SiS Real256E 2D/3D Graphics on board thats the difference. the if your board has an excellent onboard video chipset, then you've got the deluxe. if you don't have the good onboard video chipset, you're the standard model...can't really give you an answer on how to figure this out, but you might try taking out any graphics cards, and going onboard graphics, then finding a program that can tell you information about your chipsets. FreshDiagnose is a program i've used in the past, not the absolute greatest program, but its a pretty good one. similar to Aida32 if you're familiar with that.

when my computer is just starting, and no programs have loaded, my computer runs an amazing 77.5MB. once its finished loading after boot, no additional programs, its as low as 130MB. once i'm running Winamp, Trillian Pro, Opera with maybe 4 tabs max, i'm up to about 380...which is a little over 40% of my memory, but i'm trying to get more...i don't really need it, but it will help a lot

Hard Drive Manufacturers: The Definitive Thread

hmmm, yes, where is Hitachi? I've had a Maxtor for 5 years, worked flawlessly...gave it to a friend because he needed a new HD, still works flawlessly. however, there have been 4 maxtors in this house out of 4 computers. 1 has died completely. that gives a 25% failure to me. now i'm running a pair of Hitachi Deskstars, a 40GB , and an 80GB..out of the 3 months of having them and many many installs, not a single problem, even in my school, i've never seen a problem with a hitachi. WD...wellll. we have a new one, my dad insists its dead, i know its not, i wont go into that one. i had a 60GB WD drive, it died within a week of me getting it. now i have this old 13GB WD drive, i plan on making a dedicated Linux box with it, we'll see how long it lasts after that. Seagate...haven't had one to myself. i've used a pair of SCSI drives made by them and not had a problem, therefore Seagate and Hitachi are very close in my eyes. Maxtor is risky, use it at your own risk, and WD is the same as Maxtor, but with a lower failure rate out of the total number of drives i've worked with. my preference lies with hitachi. almost forgot Fujitsu...i've got a little 6GB one that i use to test hardware with this computer, hasn't failed me yet, and its years old...i just don't like it because of its very small capacity. however i've never used a toshiba drive, so i can't say anything. -
New dual-core system unstable, please help!
bonestonne replied to azagahl's topic in Hardware Hangout
i should most honestly hope that you mean 400GB drives in there. [everyone makes typos] the OS, i should assume its Windows XP, although, if it is Vista [as some use it heavily] it may be the fact that Vista is not completed yet, and may not be able to. -
Xeon processors, yumm i run those on my 'PC'. if you want those, heres a link to what i think you'll want to at least look into. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819117075 dual core, 3.2GHz, Xeon...theres a 3.8GHz single core, which is the fastest stock CPU i've ever seen so far. that processor i linked has an even more impressive price tag, and is something you may like for a server. if servers aren't running Xeon CPU's, they're not really up to what they should be.

1-3-3-1 is video. 8 beeps, on every single computer i've ever had an issue with has always been a graphics problem. if it has no graphics card [and uses onboard graphics], its a RAM issue without a doubt. if it does have a graphics card, make sure its well seated in the slot, i've had an issue where the card wouldn't be fully seated and it would beep like that., and it would just be from moving the case the wrong way. RAM is the first thing i'd think of, because most graphics cards can take RAM, onboard graphics is limited to 4mb usually [it could have changed, i don't keep track of so many specifics].

How to make Photoshop CS2 Portable? (USB)
bonestonne replied to vegettoxp's topic in Application Installs
i could be wrong, but i do believe the only way to make photoshop portable is to install it to the external drive or USB drive. if you just try to copy the program files to a USB drive [which i've tried to save time after a reinstall], its failed due to registration, and how it activates. its worth a try, but i dont see it as working very well unless its USB2.0 as for the keyboard commands not working, i'm not really sure what to say about that...could it be the difference of a PS/2 keyboard vs. a USB keyboard? i've never tested the difference. -
What is your security setup software of these days...?
bonestonne replied to ingem64's topic in Software Hangout
Firefox 1.5.0.9 [2 sucks] AVG [avast wouldn't install] Comodo Ad-Aware SE System Mechanic Pro 6 thats about it...i reinstall a lot and all my stuff is backed up on a hard drive that i use as a slave thats bootable in my other computer. its hard to loose data like this. -
you'd have to remove or disable linking to the luna desktop theme file...not entirely sure how to do it by hand though. i don't think you'd have to reinstall it, i mean, if you had a lot of free time, you could try finding the luna theme on the install CD, replacing the one on your computer, restarting, and then seeing if it worked, but you'd have to be using the original CD, not the slipstreamed one. on top of that, the chances of that actually working are slim, because it could be a change in how it links not if it can link at all..
-
if you removed multi-processing support while making the install, then thats why. i had the same issue when i went to use a stripped down version that i made a while ago, i kept wondering where my second one was, then i went and made a new one that worked. that may be something to look into.
-
while you created the unattended install, did you remove the theme? or disable changing it or anything like that? thats the only thing i can think of that would cause that...i stopped using the luna theme a long time ago because after a while i just stopped liking its looks, so i'd remove it while creating the unattended install, so thats the only thing that i can see causing it.

i have this 6GB drive, currently formatted to about 4 or so, and i was wondering how i could make it a swap drive. i know that a swap drive is used the same way RAM is, and i'd love to have more space to move around... i do have partition magic 8, but am not sure how to go about doing this...also, if its not the greatest idea, that would be something to know as well. thanks in advanced

Avoid HD failures, KEEP IT COOL!
bonestonne replied to Andromeda43's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
i stand corrected...i didn't expect you to have fans like that...in that case, i wouldn't doubt it being pretty loud... i've seen people using acoustic panelling on the inside of cases [that don't have windows and mods] to damper the sound a lot, thats probably what i would do to that case, but its not mine, so i guess its just my suggestion...this dual processor system is my loudest, i put smaller quieter fans in my other running tower [the celeron] and that was just so it would be quiet when in my room for playing music or something. this one i splurged on.. -

i almost got one of those zalmann hard drive heatpipe coolers, the place i saw them had it for $25, which isn't bad, but i have the fans, and it was an easier fix for me...i would easily recommend it for someone though...the PSU i'm using was brand new just for this system, and it had great reviews, an Enermax, and i decided i might as well give it a go, and its been holding up perfectly. powers this board and all...i had 3 ODD's for a day or two, but then thought it would be easier if i only had 2 at most.. i guess the most important thing i have to say about having case mods, and keeping the thing running well, is that if you aren't showing the thing off actively, keep the cathodes and any other lights off...1) it'll keep their lifespan at max. 2) it will prevent it from taking power away from other much more important parts, and 3) it keeps the case cooler. Cold Cathode lights aren't physically cold...it'll just slowly cook the inside of the case. -

well, i would agree in a sense, but in all honesty, how many cases have the room for power supply setups like that? i have this dual 300W power supply that gives me 600W total, a pair of 300s....if you look at how the chip is setup, one of the PSU's powers the ATX and AUX connector, the other supply is for the floppy and molex connectors...but i have no case [or way to get a case] large enough to fit that...and also, if i can run a single 300W supply that powers everything plus the fans to cool it, why would i want to do it any differently? works for some, but i wouldn't say its convenient or plausible for all. -

i would agree that many fans would make the case loud, but 60dB? i kinda find that a little hard to believe. 72dB causes internal ear damage, 60 isn't that far off. i would say my system, with 10 fans might make it to 35 at the most...but unless you have a 5700RPM 80mm case fan, i doubt that your system is that loud. seemingly 60dB, but working with audio and being a little more realistic, -3dB is where most mp3's are recorded. -
well, the key is for the whole OS, not overall...if you need to get your OS key, try googling the magic jelly bean...i'd give a direct link, but i dunno if thats ok.
-
out of all the solutions, i'd say the plugin is best, but with audio recording, you'd suffer major quality loss. i've done straight recording from device to device before, and lost all treble and bass so the music sounds completely flat. it would be better to try to download it than record it because not only will the sound quality lack, but also, your CPU usage could freeze your entire computer....and audio recording is similar to video editing...raw recorded data is pretty large...a song thats 5mb on your hard drive could be as much as 70mb raw

i'm not half as worried about the noise than the efficiency. the side and top case fans are loudest, i can turn the top one down, and with noticable sound difference. the side fan, well, thats pretty loud, it came with the case, and if you look at the pictures i have of it in that topic, you'll see its on plexiglas, and i'm a little afraid of damaging it trying to replace the fan, which is something a lot of people would be scared of too...also, in a single CPU setup like a socket 370 or close to it, one of my CPU fans would make the case roar, but all 4 are pretty dampered by the case, so i'm not worried...but also, if you get used to it, its not too bad, i'd rather have a hurricane in a box than hell in a steel cage...i don't want this thing overheating, so i decided, why not just throw in more fans. you'd be amazed how hot Xeon processors get...its like running a 2.4GHz without a fan for two hours, then grabbing the heatsink...it burns... but honestly, it comes down to whats more important, noise level or airflow...for me, it came to be airflow. i don't care if it makes a lot of noise, im usually around P4 systems that are 1.25" high, with one highspeed fan in the back thats supposed to keep the whole thing cool. [you should see how much dust is in it.] its all a work in progress with computers i guess, trying to keep it cool, then trying to make it work more efficiently...its rarely hand in hand. i may run an old system, but its still a computer, just like all the rest. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g142/bon...r/HDDcooler.jpg thats my cooling setup, a pair of 80mm case fans. theres a switch to turn them on/off, but only because i had no other way to get two fans working... -

i've got pictures finally! but they're a little out of focus...first time using such a nice camera...don't ask. [the switch in the back is what turns the fans on/off] -
you know, i told some of my friends to use avast, and i thought 25 viruses was bad. burn your data and reinstall....420 is a kinda sad number, your system is too depressed to go on [jk] but you may want to just start over, it'll be a lot easier, no replacing .vbs files by hand [its a bad idea if your av software mistakes you as a virus...you'll get locked out of your own system.
