Its a jungle out there. Can't find a free countdown timer, or one that's worth the $20 or $25 offered. Please help.

I've been using Zone Alarm Suite for the past six months. No problem with it. I like the way it grabs viruses. I had used Zone Alarm Pro for 2 years prior to that. Never had any problems. I just bought Norton 360, but won't install it for another six months when my ZA subscription runs out. I also use(d) Norton Ghost 10 to do a complete backup of my boot (system) drive. I had problems with that. Any thoughts on Norton 360?

I would like to allow anyone intersted in a particular set of files access to a particular directory or folder containing those files while restricting access to all other folders. This should be done without active involvemnt on my part.

Never, never use a Mcafee product. Your will just be asking for and getting a whole lot of trouble.

Its either the CD drive or the cable. If trying another CD drive doesn't work, try replacing the cable. Easiest way is to test another both options by not actually removing the original. Just plug the cables, suspend the new CD and reboot. What happens?

This may be off topic, but sometimes when I am connecting, I get a virus warning that the "Bla Trojan horse" attack attempt is being blocked. Where does this come from and how does this occur by just connecting?

Just unplug the secondary tap from the 98 drive and plug in the new drive to it (no need to remove the 98 drive). Plug the new drive as the secondary and make sure the jumpers are set for secondary (otherwise it will reset your bios) (no need to format the new drive). Use your image software to "Copy Drive" (not create image). This will exactly replicate the new drive with all of the primary. Since it is larger than the present drive, no worry about compression. Unplug the primary and plug the new drive into it after setting the jumpers for a primary (you do not have to install at this time, just let it hang loose and free). Do a boot up test. I'm assuming that Acronis works like Ghost in that you have the option to create image or backup drive. If not, you'll probably want to make the meager investment in Ghost. As far as the 98 drive, I suggest doing the backup to one of the externals. Once done, remove the 98 and put in the new drive in the secondary plug. Format using full format, let all other settings at default. You will get a warning message, clidk O.K. If your getting a warning from an anti-virus program, just choose exclude. Do or not scandisk. Then repeat backup from the external to the new secondary. (PS, you may want to completely rid the external of all data so that it will not be copied to the new drive).

I'm happy with XP. MS just released 8 critical updates, so I agree MS is still constantly working on improving. When I first installed XP, there was at least one critical update per week for about 2 months. I think Vista will be a great OS, but it would probably be better to wait about a year when a better package is available. Of course if your a droller and have to have the latest and greatest, I don't think there's any problem with that either.

Did you check your BIOS to see if your floppy is recognized? If not change the setting.

I would be curious for an answer. I tried Microsoft administative tools to create ISO write to CD, but it doesn't work. I was trying to create a bootable CD to run memory test, no luck.

I don't understand what all the fuss is all about. I'm using gobs of Norton programs, ie ghost, AV, WinfaxPro. And I have gobs of other programs on my main drive. But my total HD is 9.4 GB with about 65GB free. But this isn't even a worry, I have 2 other drives that beg to be filled with a total of 290 GB of free space. O.K., so my ram is filled with with 550 mb resources, but I still have 450 free. Suggest getting more ram and a second HD. Why go with a second rate AV program. Symantec is the best.

But I did initially post you could do that with explorer. I was just responding to the correction that I acknowledged in the previous post.

You will also need dielectric grease. This helps the heatsink adhere to the processor. It also helps distribute the heat.

This will copy verbaturm the system hard drive. And from the last post, you will need this or similar software. You can also use this if you have multiple particians; however, you must copy each partition separately. That's scary. Your not using anti-virus software!? In the last 10 minutes, I've had about 18 intrusion attempts. On average 1 of those in 20 minutes is a possible hack attempt. Your doomed if you don't use anti-virus or just never make an on-line connection. In the last month I've gotten about 12 of these by just connecting!!!: Details: Rule "Default Block Bla Trojan horse" blocked (4.249.207.198,1042). Inbound UDP packet. Local address,service is (localhost,1042). Remote address,service is (4.249.207.198,1042). Process name is "N/A". After you re-format your HD and re-install all of your programs, don't connect until you have installed anti-virus software! May be someone can actually help you without re-formatting.

IE may not be tagged to your modem port. Just guesing though. Check your IRQ and make sure there is no conflict.

Why not temporaryly remove your 80 gb (I assume its the secondary). install your new HD as a secondary and copy everything to it from your master OP system 40 gb. Remove the 40 gb and replace it with the new one and place back the 80 gb where it was. You should be good to go. Its that simple.

If you want to use the contents of your hard drive in another computer, then you must create image. Backup is for replacing or adding hard drive in the same computer. My question.....how do you create an image in one computer and restore it in another?

It must be an HP computer. Instead of default user it is HP user. I had the same problem. Solution, return your computer to where you bought it and get a non HP computer without the gazillian junk programs on it and on the restore disk that you never wanted in the first place.

I'm using 9.0, and I assume 10.0 is the same way.

You don't need a boot up disk if yur legal. The original ghost disk is a boot up disk. That's how you work it in the recovery environment.
