  1. if you are conntecting with remote desktop, add the /console switch when connecting to see if any error messages are being passed to hte console that you cannot see, (ie mstsc.exe /console)
  2. Probably should go under beta, but most people who are interested in servers are here anyways... Just got longhorn server (5270) running, anyone have any exprierence with it? Any opinions on how it runs so far? i tested out 5112 before and it ran smoothly for the build, hopefully this will impress also DC created and DNS building as i type.....
  3. never mind wasn't thinking right wouldn't be MSI switches...
  4. how far along the shutdown procedure are you getting? are you getting the reason code box then things start to shutdown then it hangs?
  5. think of it like this, you domain name on the web is www.australia.comfor your domain you would use australia.com, then each site could be something like sydney.australia.com, townsville.australia.com, brisbane.australia.com. this way it is easier to identify each domain and where it is located the tld is australia.com and for owa you could have owa.australia.com or something to that nature. DFS would still be an ideal way to go through this, remeber you don't have to replicate the whole thing. you can choose what folders you wish to replicate across to other machines, maybe just software shares or shared drives for users. this would also help with latency issues accross the network. As for everyone being all over the place, as cluberti stated earlier, you can setup this new domain independtly of the old one, then move everything to the new domain, on the client end the most they should have to do would be change the domain registration. in effect, bring online new domain, create trust to old domain, move test AD object (or a small group of beta testers(preferably some from each site) to the new domain, register the machine with the new domain and make sure they work, once they work move everything else across and test, if not working you can always move back to the old domain as a last resort, once everything has been tested and working you can shutdown the old domain, then you can use those machines in the new domain (i would defiantly wipe the boxs to be sure nothing contaminates the new domain). You are right it will defiantly be alot of work, but you can either do it now, or wait for longhorn server and have to do a server migration as well as a domain migration, THAT would be a nightmare.
  6. a service or program that is corrupted that is called through RPC could cause the shutdown to occur, you can check the file integrity (sorry couldn't find the command line for it) and see if anything has been changed.
  7. yeah 2 images most likely, they are using a tool call ximage, to have all the images in one, they do this already with vista, longhorn server, and the tablet edition of vista (in 5270) the release a demo of ximage with beta 1, it is very very cool, will make creating a standard image for a company very easy to do.
  8. good to hear that it is working now, i am will try that with the desktop i just built and see if it has the same issue
  9. having 7 seperate domains may cause some issues with the exchange propegating across all of them, just one domain run AD? or do each have there own active directory also? having one primary domain (ie central.local) the having child domains in the same forest (ie, site1.central.local, site2.central.local, etc) would allow for a easier deployment of exchange i would think. but sadly my exchange knowledge is a little weak so i can only suggest. hopefully this helps, i am curious also so i will do some research the 2 different setups and see which one would work better or the pluses and minuses of each.
  10. hrm, i will try and load vista to a desktop again tommorow and through just outlook on and see what i get. i doubt the HW is the issue, (i have it running on a laptop and a tablet with no issues) but i will try a desktop to just to see, anyway, The windows restart manager is a tool MS has been developing to allow for hotpactching of the OS, glad to see it is working even in this verision, you might try deleting the exchange connection or creating a second profile and see if the same thing occurs.
  11. @biohead, look at my post, the video is on the new sounds being recorded for vista, it is very interesting to watch...
  12. depeding on what version they buy i would expect they get a certain number of verions in the WIM that will be on their DVD, remeber most computer retailers don't give you the install cd or dvd anymore for the OS, just a restore disc, if you were to actually go out and buy vista, i would expect that you would get some of hte versions that are either above or below the leve of the one that you bought. or MS could go the route of stuffing every version onto the DVD (which is possible, x86, tablet and server edtions are only 1.9 gig atm) i would bet more of a DVD of 86x with all the versions or 64x with all the versions, but not one with both.
  13. Memnoch is right, not much choice but to backup everything, format the drive and install Standard then restore everything back, can the App run on another serve temporarily? if this server was in test before was there a production server that was running this before you could bring back online while you do the update. Sounds like you may have a weekend install coming up
  14. Lol, yeah memnoch, just tell them you need another 3 servers... they won't care @cluberti, yeah not having any passive nodes does make the cluster nothing more then a server on steriods, but budgets usually dictate the system used vs what most people actually need. and don't go away, we still have to pick your brain more
  15. how do you have permissions setup for the printer? is it setup to a TCP/IP port? is it listed in AD?
  16. is the machine a desktop or a laptop? also did you just install the default setting for outlook or did you do the setup for a automated install? what does that installer look like it is trying to install? have you checked the event logs for any MSI events or install errors? i have sent and recieved mail from both on the network and off the network, we use W2K3 EE instead of SBS but i don't believe that to be the issue, we both are running the same version of Exchange so that narrows it down some
  17. what silverhaze was looking to do was split up the DVD, which can be done since the WIM the vista comes on supports that functionality with Ximage, just not possible since MS didn't release the corrisponding ximage tool with 5270
  18. restart the vm and follow the instructions to the same point again, if you get the same error, then try the command C:\>Diskpart diskpart> Rescan diskpart> select disk 0 diskpart> create partition primary that should get it, if not your VM isn't registering the VHD that you added, did you add a SCSI or IDE HD to the VM?
  19. are you going into safe mode with networking? also what you using to get onto the internet? broadband or dial-up and what kind. do you get any errors when you try to load vista normally?
  20. scott, is this in a network environment? what version of exhchange is this on? 2000 or 2003? did install the whole office suite or just outlook? did you add the machine to the domain where the exchange is located or no? i have gotten outlook to connect to an exchange 2003 server without issue so it should be possible
  21. i would agree with you, perfmon is much easier to read, having used poolmon only once though i know what you mean by the overwhelming of data. realized - have run perfmon yet and gotten data back from that? no need to worry about poolmon until you have gotten the data back from perfmon.
  22. fast user switching is not supported in any Server 2003 version.
  23. found out the the tablet extensions had been added in this version and wanted to see if anyone else was able to get vista installed on a tablet PC at all. installed it at work and runs amazing well (for a 1.1 ghz centrio with 1 gig ram) very smooth and all the normal tablet functionality is there and working. I was impressed. any one else?
  24. Robert Fripp - Behind the scenes at Windows Vista recording session http://channel9.msdn.com/showpost.aspx?postid=151853 video from channel 9 on the new sounds in vista, sadly i can't get sound drivers to work either with vista..... it seems to be a hard thing to get working.
  25. If you have a copy of the corrosponding version of ximage you could break the WIM image into cd parts and then burn to CD, not sure what else would be needed in this scenerio since i don't have access to the new ximage to test with yet, but that is really the only choice, try burning on a different computer and with a DVD from a different spindle
