Does the internet come in through the router? if so you may want to look into using the server as the gateway rather then the router, it depends on what testing you want to do. it can be setup either just a difference in configuration depending on the entry point. Depending on which device will be the one providing the internet connection will depend on what you need to do, for the router being the connection to the internet you will need to set the IP given to the router as the gateway in you DHCP server scope (note: the IP should be within the range specificed in you scope or you will have to deal with routing issues), this will allow any clients that get a DHCP address from the server to know the router is the one providing the internet connection. If you want to have the internet connection come in through the server, you can you ICS or the more robust RRAS functionality in server 2003 to share the internet connect. depending on the router this will change... but you will have to take the router out of a gateway mode and change it to just a routing mode. them you can assign it a static IP from the scope that is on you DHCP server (preferably from an exceptions block of IPs) that should be all the settings that you need to do on hte router.

you could run a PE based on Windows 2003 from a USB pen drive, but 2003 itself most likely would not be able to run

many older video cards and onboard cards do not have drivers that will work with Vista, you just may be out of luck, if you can try and get a AGP card to try, you will probably have better luck getting drivers for a AGP video card then the onboard video card, Nvidia has decent drivers for vista, ATI to for the most part,

make sure your Partition is also at least 10 - 12 gigs as setup files will need to be copied to the disk also. or just have a second disk available

a WINPE or BARTPE CD with network services or CD burning capabilities would be the most efficent way to do it, knoppix would work but a win or bart PE cd would work better to recover info off the win2000 partition(weither it be FAT32 or NTFS). being able to add the icons from vista to 2000 i don't think is possible, you can try and take them out of the beta, but i don't think the formats are the same. there is also no skinning engine in 2000 like XP, so xp start bar is probabaly out also. windows installer 3.1 is the newest installer for 2000, if you have SP4 you may already have it. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en

unfortuantly no, not unless you can get your VM to recogonize your Video card, which i do not believe is possible since it uses a generic SVGA driver to show video, you would be better off either either dual booting your machine or get another HD you can use for testing

Xp Sp2 and Vista(longhorn) are 2 different OS's it isn't possible to Nlite a Vista install. Changing the WIM can only be done with Ximage and that is build specific, there hasn't been a release of ximage since beta 1 so this is most likely XP sp2 you are working with that has a vista skin attached to it, try the XP forums for more help

Once you install Vmware tools, you will also have the ability to drag and drop files into the VM, from the Vm just drag the files to your desktop and they will be copied there. This also works to move files into the VM

problem fixed. original DNS was setup before AD was, so the records for AD where never created, recreated scopes and records populated fine

ok, tricky question, creating DNS records for a DC on windows 2003, can you do it? it isn't an option in SVR recvords, is there something i am missing. to explain better, i am trying to add a Longhorn server to my domain, (network.local) it is looking for a SVR record for _ldap.-tcp.dc._msdcs.network.local i have raised the domain controller level to 2003 and tried adding the record to no avail. should DCs be listed in DNS if they are integrated into AD, or did i install my DNS prior to running AD installation. sadly i can't remeber, any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance

try deleting the last instance of the printer and reconnecting it, did you share the printer via a TCPIP port or just right clicked on the printer and shared it?

is this just a normal W2k3 EE disk? or has it been modified at all?

I will assume you have built clusters before, would it be possible to PM you if i run into issues? also the hardware i would be testing this on would be a p4 2.4 w/HT, 2 gigs ram, 2 x 120 gig SATA drives. i know it is gonna be kinda slow to run, i know i can get it going

Got vista installed on VMware 5.5, working fine for all drivers. Had to use another NIC besides my onboard. are you using a NAT or bridged connection for the NIC into the VM?

Ok, learning more about clustering but want to try and build my own cluster, anyway to build one with getting mutliple machines for it? was thinking of using virtual server 2005 and some VMs with 2k3EE and try getting them into a cluster. any thoughts on this?

2 pcs and a server would constitute a LAN (Local Area Network) for to be considered a WAN, usually it involves leased lines (DSL, Cable, T1, DS3) That connect area offices. Say a office in new york and one in Chicago, connecting the 2 with a lease line and running network services across that line and now you have a WAN

are both machine server? or is one a server and the other a client, if the latter the server should have a static IP set while hte client machine is assigned a IP via DHCP, this would allow you to setup the server as your gateway to the internet, HTTP works over port 80 so both computers would be useing that to connect unless you are using some kind of encryption (ssl, etc) best was to go about it would be to setup the server as the DHCP server, serve out IPs to the other machine, in the DHCP settings you can set the gateway,dns for the other computer to get out with also.

check the eventviewer for any errors. see if there are any related to explorer.exe or what are the errors that are listed.
