  1. only can be done through the WAIK as of now, sorry
  2. ahh thanks for bringing me back to reality, whenever i code i try and make things to hard :-D
  3. that is actually something built into the WinPE, not sure that it can be changed, if you wanted to ignore it you could always make a bart pe and load the WIM file on it and launch the WIM fine with Imagex
  4. Ok, trying to find an easier way to do this, i want to export a whole subset of registry keys. particulary [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers] but all i can find through vb or wmi is how to read one key at a time, which is alot of keys with multiple types of keys. any ideas on a good way to accomplish this?
  5. i wouldn't call this a cost analysis of vista at all, at most this covers one specific point that the auther has a large amount of expertise in (at least it is assumed he does) his point shed a little light on things that might cause issues. he gives no proven facts or actual trial data. i'll leave the link up for right now as it is a good read. His one statement about audio signals i have run across before, where my MP3s that are DRM'd witth fade in and out though a MP3. though i account the beta drivers of Creative to this issue more then the DRM. till i can rule out driver issues i can't comment further. In my mind his paper is more hypothetical then anything else.
  6. Writein, are you naming the file Autounattend.xml? Every unattend file for Vista should be named as such. have you tried with the file on a USB memory stick and booting with it present on the machine? your question is a valid one but i am going to move it to the proper catagory
  7. what i wrote was a HTA (hypertext Application) that will prompt you for location and credentials for backing up a machine based on computer name. basically all you have to do is start the USMT hta and enter your credentials and hit scan or load and it will take care of the rest if you wanted to do something easier you could do something as easy as writing a VB script to help deal with all the command line stuff you have to write for it, let me finish writing up the HTA i have and i will try and turn it into a template you can work with.
  8. check all the codecs spooky mentioned. but also check things like divx and and 3rd party video editing tools you may have loaded, most of these haven't working with vista very well. if at all
  9. aspenjim, make sure you get teh version 3.0 of USMT, it is faster and runs quite well just finished automating it for work and it works wonders
  10. what didn't you like about the vista backup?
  11. normally you would boot the VM into a a bartPE or winPE environment and then make a image of the attached HD.
  12. Correct, you can either use a KMS server that is internal to your Company. If one is not available then your copy of vista will connect to the internet and use one of the KMS servers that MS has implemented
  13. when you changed providers did you go from a static IP to dynamic?? check the TCP/IP settings for the Internet NIC card and see if a static IP was set or it is setup to dynamically receive an IP, when you connect the modem to a single PC and it works what kind of IP does that computer get?
  14. make sure you read up on the New Activation guidelines. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvi...lan/volact.mspx Vista should not be activated with a unattended installation anymore, rather after first boot and connection to a network/internet the Vista machine with connect to a KMS (key management Server) to activate vista
  15. cluberti is correct, the hardware virtualized by VMware is not close enough to the actual hardware on your computer and after moving the image to your actual PC it will most likely require reactivation.
  16. ok i think this has run its course, Closed
  17. check with process monitor, launch from one shortcut and then launch from the other, see if anything differs on what it is opening or accessing
  18. you could also just attach your .xml file to your post, rather then posting the entire thing in the forum, make sure you take out your CD-key first though
  19. quickest way to rename the account would to be enable said account and then add a synch or asynch command to laund a registry edit to change the administrator name
  20. Now the big question would be why haven't these software developers released things for Linux and Mac? because they either can't (cause it won't work right on that platform) or because they don't see the benefit. unless software developers see a large enough user base where their product can be profitable they are not going to write software for that OS. Since linux for the most part is open source, software vendors have problems writing and selling software for linux so that is a risky venture. An Macs are still a rare and exotic breed in the corperate world, so writing software for them is limited as well. but enough of my rant, this thread is about what Vista can that XP can't. it would only be fair to start with things that each can natively do and work from their (XP has so many add-ons out that had to be made to make-up for everything is hasn't been capable of doing for the last 5 years that anything you want to do with it has been made) give vista enough time and gadgets will be found far and wide with interesting things that it can do. Lets try and stay on topic people things vista can do better wireless management and profile creation. i was on a road trip this weekend and stopped at no less then 5 places that had wireless hotspots. i saved all the hotspots with vista, including usernames and passwords for each place (some having to be entered into a web browser to connect) on the way back up, stopping at all the same places i was able to boot up from sleep, and automatically connect to all but one of the hotspots. something that would not have been possible on XP
  21. ok, this isn't going anywhere kartel, good post on the end of life for XP, we will see if MS sticks to it or not
  22. Raffa, <FirstLogonCommands> <SynchronousCommand wcm:action="add"> <CommandLine>\\servername\share\file.reg <Order>1</Order> </SynchronousCommand> </FirstLogonCommands> rather then trying to add just the single registry edit just add it through a .reg file. even if you are trying to add a single registry change you need to use a reg file
  23. to use ASR you should have ASR backups already Created, if the HDDS are being detected you most likely will need to installed fresh HDs, boot up from the CD for the OS that was installed and choose F2 and load the ASR.
  24. Jaclaz, that is very true i didn't even notice it, CDimage is an internal MS Tool, OScdimage is available for public use, should be used by consumer and enterprise IT folk. OSCDimage works perfectly well, just use that. Unless of course you work at MS closing thread
  25. Use OSCDimge from the WAIK, this will do what you are looking for
